The Sports Illustrated staff has serious substance abuse issues as it recently rated the greatest marching band in the history of marching bands...
#4 in its Top 10 rankings.

Nicknamed “The Showband of the Southwest,” the world famous Longhorn Band has performed at JFK’s inaugural parade in 1961 and at Super Bowl VIII in 1981, and is one of the biggest (well, they are from Texas) and most field consuming bands you’ll ever see.

But size isn’t everything, and the Longhorn Band is able to do drills on the field similar to bands half their size, and make it look easy.

Exciting arrangements and intricate drills are hallmarks of the Longhorn Band, and their 350-strong membership puts out and impressive but not overpowering sound.

Something must be wrong. I went through the list twice and could not find marching aggy.

Florida Normal College for Women is #2? Biggest joke ever posted on this site. OK, I understand that I'm an old timer who thinks halftimes are for restroom and concession stand visits, as well as to stand around with friends and criticize our coaching staff and players, but there are no fewer than five dozen high school bands in Texas better than FSU. I've seen them in Tallahassee, in Gainesville, and in Miami. They are about as spirited as a Boys Town ***** in Piedras Negras.

Southern? Only argument is that they should be way closer to number one.

I never marched in a band, but this list is far beyond ridiculous. Rice's MOB is better than more than half that list.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Aggy will boycott if they get a whiff of this list and I agree Free Shoes University does not deserve to be #2.

    Wooster,

FSU isn't even the best band in Tallahassee.

Lol. I used to feel this way, until my son became a bandy and now I love halftime. At the marching band national championships a few years ago, they were selling a t-shirt that said something like "Ladies and Gentlemen, today's band performance will be preceded and followed by a complimentary football exhibition."

More entertaining for sure -- but as a band they are well below average. And they aren't even the best scramble band -- Stanford blows them away.

our band is incredible! so why do we stick them in the open south end zone away from the larger section of students?!?! we are the only school that does that..... no wonder people constantly write about our game day atmosphere needing help!

    NOLA.

There are a number of major schools which place their bands in the endzone. Florida State was the first I saw, but they put them as high up as possible behind the goal posts. At least we have some students around the band. FSU's is placed all alone unless it's the Florida game. I would prefer the band be with the larger student section, but demand for tickets has moved them out.

Besides, with the Longhorn Band sitting in front of the jumbotron, it is much easier for the cheesy damn commercials and the weather geek to drowned out anything the band attempts to do.

sabrehorn..... good point! and you are correct. lsu is another school along with florida, tennessee and penn state that have their bands in the end zone. however most of those schools (i have been lucky enough to attend games at all of them) have their entire student section in the end zone with the band so there is not 50 yards of separation between the band and large section of students. i keep reading on different posts more people making comments about moving our band back to the east side. and since it would simply mean transferring about 400 students tickets to the south end zone and swapping places...... it does not seem too difficult. a friend of mine wrote mr. patterson a letter about it and patterson said when the south end zone expansion takes place, their goal is to have all the students together along with the band in the new end zone. just trying to think of ways we can make DKR a better atmosphere and a more difficult place for opposing teams. thanks for you comments back
