So a team goes for 2 and let's say gets it. They then get an bonus to kick an extra point from the 50. Is the bonus kick a free kick or can the other team attempt to stop / block it? If it is not a free kick can the other team return a blocked ball for a point(s)?
I don't like the idea of two un-timed plays allowing for people to score points. It'll add too much time on to games. Now, if they want to come up with a wacky 3-point PAT, like maybe put the ball at the 50 and see if someone can either kick a FG or get a TD from there, I might be more open to it, but only in the last 2 minutes of the half or something.
Or just leave it as it is. Its not a given that the kicker will make the extra point. He still has to kick it well and not get it blocked.
It might work. But why not have even 2 more points available after a team makes the 2 points? Have the QB then do a happy dance and if the officials think it is good enough award 2 more points and then the free kick.
I say any FG made 50 + yards, you get 3 points. I think that will make game strategies interesting and not too silly, like the one proposed in article.
Just eliminate the kick and give them 7 point or move it back to were only about 70% of kicks are made, then it will mean something.
The prevailing idea seems to be to simply move the ball to the 1. Then that makes it more enticing to either go for 2 or kick. I like that idea. I believe I read that kickers made the extra point 99.3% of the time last year.
I'd be ok with that but I don't see a need to help coaches out with their overly conservative decision-making tendencies. I think most of them would still go for 1 even from the 1 yard line or 1 foot line for that matter. I think most coaches would only go for 2 when the "chart" says they need it, even if they could make the 2 point conversation 60% of the time (which actually is the case on running plays when going for 2 in the NFL right now anyway). Especially since they'd find a way to go for a commercial break inbetween the two, and then go to yet another one before the ensuing kickoff. Placing cameras looking straight down the goal lines, end lines, and sidelines is a good idea and should have been done years ago. Most of the other proposed changes are pretty dumb. And for some reason they still think it's a good idea to have 5 yard penalties go with automatic first downs, which only makes sense from a "Dammit we still need more scoring, we haven't made it hard enough on defenses yet" perspective.
Less conservative coaches like Chip Kelly would most assuredly go for 2. All it takes is a few coaches to have good success and you'd see the NFL change rapidly given it's a copy cat league.
This sounds more like a game show than football. We now move to Double Jeopardy, where the money amounts are significantly larger.
