He was good player and student at UT. His stint at head coach didn't work out in the long run, but the "Shock The Nation" 1990 season, that included the memorable game against Houston, in Austin, will always be remembered. Unfortunately, so will the 1991 Cotton Bowl disaster, against Miami.

McWilliams served the University of Texas for over fifty years and I always found him very personable and approachable. :hookem2:

I graduated from UT in May of 1990, and moved back home to Houston on the day of the game against UH. Got there just in time to see the kickoff and watch an epic game with my dad and brother. I don’t recall anything about a “Cotton Bowl” or “Miami” or whatever all that talk is about.

The memory is all too real for me. I was there and sat on about the 45 yard line, the tickets were very large that year for some reason. It was cold sitting in the shade and it just got colder. Miami came out wanting to fight before the kickoff. They cold cocked our return man on the kick off. Then the game kept getting worse and the weather got colder and damp.

I remember driving back to Austin in the sleet, still in shock with some friends.

I was also at that 1990 game against UH and that was the loudest I ever remember a crowd being at a home Texas game.

I was outta town but set the VCR to record it and instructed everyone I knew not to tell me about the game or the score.

When I returned, I watched about a quarter and a half. I then ejected the tape, took it and a hammer to the back porch, and beat the inanimate crap out of it.

    True story.

I too recorded or started to record the 1991 CB, but stopped it after probably the first quarter. Recorded something else over it. 2010 'Bama game I still have a recording of it - did watch it once but stopped before the end of the game.

Genuinely fine human being, 1990 was my junior year in college and that shock the nation tour was one of the most fun seasons ever for Texas football (I cant remember what happened in the bowl game that year so all I remember is beating OU and finally ending aggy's six year streak and of course the Houston game which I watched from a hotel room in San Antonio at a conference with some other Texas students and our room was so loud it felt like we were there). Ironically I saw that his firing as football coach probably saved his life and his love for Texas led him to 24 more years of service. Huge thanks to McWilliams, Lifelong Longhorn defined.

McWilliams was/is a good Longhorn and should be celebrated for his service to UT. I was at the Houston game in '90. Un-frickin'-believable. Loudest game I've ever been to. Sat on the front row at the Cotton Bowl game against Miami. They has us beat before kickoff. Each time Miami scored, it got a little colder. It was North Pole cold by the end of the game.

I was at the Houston game. Horns came out on fire, took it to Houston, and never looked back. At game's end, Wally Prior the announcer yelled over the PA "Get that idiot off the goal posts!!" that was funny and I still laugh about it.

I was also at the Miami Cotton Bowl. It was cold. The only funny thing I saw that day was the drunk guy that slipped in the Men's Room while taking a leak and fell in the old trough style urinal....he then had the nerve to hold out a hand and ask for help to get out..."Nuh-uhh brother! Get your own *** out!!" The game wasn't much of a contest unfortunately.

Good luck to Coach McWilliams. Great guy to hang around.
