I'm guessing there is market prrssure out there for the preferred candidate and compliance rules for job posting, etc. In the big scheme of things 250k is a gnat fart if you get your guy who you think can bring in millions.

Do you think there’s a real appetite for basketball here and maybe the fans have just soured a bit on Barnes in recent years?

I wonder if another coach would bring some renewed enthusiasm if he can get off to a good start and be competitive.

As attendance dropping 4K per game in football last year showed, he would have to start by winning to get better attendance in year one....... also it would help if Patterson does not raise ticket prices.

I hope the new coach displays passion/emotion to his players in BOTH a criticizing and approving sense, depending on the situation. Meaning he mixes the positive emotion with the negative. Barnes was the parent who constantly bitched at his kids. So much so they became unresponsive like emotional zombies. Kind of a broken spirit situation. Brown was a glorified praiser his last several years. His kids ran around like undisciplined, entitled brats with no willpower to put in the work to win.

I hope the new coach has a blend of both coaching methods like Strong...inflexible toughness along with a desire to connect and praise when players succeed.

Barnes was a class act and he should be treated as such. Best wishes to Barnes and his family, thanks for every ounce of effort you gave to the to longhorns.

Thank you for the class, humor and anything else you brought to Texas during your tenure. I hope you land in a great spot and have nothing but good things, Coach Barnes. It's time to part ways, however. Hook 'em!

Does this mean we won't be playing Lenoir-Rhyne every year? Who do we replace them with, Wofford?

I think Augie is the best coach we have in any major sport---men's or women's---at this great University of Texas.

Thank you coach Barnes for your 17 years of total effort for Texas basketball. Thank you Mr. Patterson for moving forward and attempting to improve our basketball program.

Now that the niceties are out of that way, I really hope that we get the right coach hired. It was time for a change. There are several good coaches (e.g., Marshall, Smart, possibly Mack) that will accept the Texas coaching job and I really hope we get one of them. :bevo:

We have too many resources and too much willing fan support to be mired in mediocrity and fan apathy. :hookem:

I agree. I am glad for this change at this time, but not with any negativity toward Rick Barnes. He was a great hire for us, did a great job in a classy way, took us further than we ever had been as a program, and may go do even better things somewhere else.

We do need a change, I think, and probably he does, too. There's no guarantees, but my best guess is that the change will be an improvement from where we are. So, good day all around.

This is unknown to any of us. It will only be a good day if and only if we hire an equal or better coach. Hiring a better coach is not a given. Barnes followed Penders and Brown followed Mackovic. However, Kaiser Bob followed Lemons and McWilliams followed Akers. (I hate using McWilliams as an example, because I like McWilliams even though he only had one good season.)

It sounds like Patterson already has the hire locked up (and its a Shocker!). Hopefully the new coach will take us to the next level like Barnes took us to the next level from Penders and we will not take a step back like we did with Kaiser Bob following Abe Lemons.

    THIS!

As an example Tennessee just fired their third coach in three years. They too are a "former" football school with some basketball success, but cant get their **** together anymore.

I heard Patterson wants to hire within 10 days. If he rushes this we could be in trouble. Cant just go hire a name or a hot commodity......gotta do the research, but maybe he already has since Barnes saved his job by overachieving last year.

Patterson is a basketball man. I believe he will have several well qualified candidates to apply and that could even include someone from the pro ranks. I haven't heard this idea bandied about any.
