We're going to the Sweet 16!

At one point in the season (and with injuries already in the picture) we were poised for a #1 or #2 seed against a pretty tough schedule at that time. A #5 seed is not supposed to make it to the Sweet 16 and I do like the way we finished out the last part of the season after all the injuries.

If this season doesn't make you proud and excited about the future of the program, I don't know what could. :hookem2:

Proud of them, no matter what! The ONE thing I hope to see this team work on, is turnovers. I want them to make it a goal to have 10 or less TO's per game next season. Hook 'Em!! :hookem2:

Man, I was very impressed with Sarah. I would like to see her play basketball full time, a lot of skill and solid mobility.

Davenport and Atkins were a combined 5 for 25. Davenport was 1 for 11. UConn shot 42% from three point land. Texas 22%.
You can't beat the big teams if you can't score big yourself.
18 turnovers. UConn smears everybody, but this was embarrassing, I have to admit.
We just haven't been able to recruit enough good shooting guards.

I didn't see the game, so I have two questions:

----the box score says Imani only played 17 minutes, though her stats looked good for the time she was in. Is she hurt?
----did we try to run and gun with them, or did we try to play more deliberately and slow it down?

I think when Imani "went down" on a play and grabbed her knee, the decision must have been to not take any chances. We were down by more than 20 at that point.

The game was always going to be an uphill battle, so I don't know why some people are surprise. If you watched Uconn this year you pretty much knew that the outcome was going to be very similar to what it was. We tried everything, it wouldn't of mattered if we ran or walked the ball up the court. For me it wasn't embarrassing because it was what I expected. They did the most important thing you can do when your outmanned, which is to compete.

We all knew UConn would probably win by 20-30; they clobber everybody. But I can't help it, a fifty point loss is kind of embarrassing, and shows how far we have to go. I'm not surprised at the loss; but the magnitude is greater than I expected. I thought we could do better than Rutgers

Hattis does and should put volleyball first. Her presence as a middle blocker is greater than that as a center.

Also she has a shot at a national championship under Jerritt Elliott.

I don't agree with that at all, if we played any team other than Uconn we would have a great chance to win. And what does Rutgers have to do with anything? You do know that Rutgers guards led by Tyler Scaife are very good. Also they are used to seeing and playing against Uconn, they were just in the same conf for years up until this year. We have a lot of work to do, but mark it down. Barring injury if we aren't in the same bracket has Uconn we will be in the Final Four next year.

She's in the same situation in both sports, i think she's a better basketball player. Remember she didn't take up volleyball until late in her highschool career.

I haven't read yet what happened with Imani. I hope they were just being on the cautious side and there's no real injury. She looked fine walking out. The game was pretty painful. No one had a good game, and Uconn was mind-boggling. Even Uconn doesn't always shoot that great. They not only have great skill going for them, but also amazing confidence, which helps a lot. It's a cycle --- when you reach a certain point, you get the confidence, and then the confidence allows you to play even better. There were few bright spots. Sarah did a great job subbing for Imani, hitting three baskets in a row. Atkins had some good moments with her steals and a few nice baskets. I think not having played them in years worked against us. We were extra scared, and I think they were very geared up for this game, judging from their pre-game comments about how we were so unknown to them. But, I'm excited about next year. We will be good, with Nekia back and Hosey and Higgs coming in. I'm glad we didn't take any chances with Imani's health. From the little bit I've looked online, unfortunately, it doesn't sound like either Higgs or Hosey is a long-range bomber. We desperately need better three point shooting. Hopefully we can figure it out.

I'm really bummed about the way the girls lost this game only because I love this team so much I really wanted the rest of the nation to see how much this team has improved and how good this team is, unfortunately they ran into a buzzsaw. Next year the team should be a #1 or #2 seed

You're right in that she did take up volleyball late. She found that she preferred it to basketball and stuck with it.

However she is not in the same situation in both sports. She's a dominant middle blocker and a good back-up center.

2015 Texas VB > 2016 Texas WBB. If a championship is what she wants, the choice is simple. However if she does prefer bb now, she should dedicate her off-season to them and forgo vb.

Every time she plays in bb I worry that she will suffer an injury ending her volleyball career.

An embarrassing day to be a fan, and the sunshine pumping on this thread is hilarious!! Has a Texas WCBB team EVER lost a game by more than 50 points before? Our rumored poor half court play in offense is not rumored but factual: UConn scored more points in a half than we scored in forty minutes. Given the predictability of the passing lanes, it is a miracle that there were only 18 turnovers.

Aston has been setting records at Texas for a while now - longest losing streak, longest conference losing streak, but now she is also setting NCAA records. UConn's margin of victory today was the largest in the HISTORY of the NCAA tournament for the round of 16 and up! In over 30 years of tournament play, NO team in the round of 16 has lost as badly as Texas lost today!!!

I partially agree with Rattfan that TX has the talent to be a final four team next year, but we don't have the player development or the coaching. TX was picked to finish first in the big 12. We finished 6th in the weakest Big 12 in living memory! And before we talk final 4, closer to home, how about beating Baylor first?? 11 losses in a row???

No coach in the country does less with more than Karen Aston. Shameful, but congrats to UConn who showed us how the game of basketball can and should be played: great shooting, terrific spacing, sustained movement without the ball, superb passing, intelligent screening and double screening - when necessary, and the best team defense I have ever seen, easy, crisp rotations: effort, intensity, intelligence: overall a joy to watch. Wish it were happening here.

I have watched nearly every game this season. I can count one on hand, the number of backdoor cuts, baseline drives, pick and rolls on offense all season. I have yet to see a single double screen to get a guard an open look. All we do in the half court offense is try to force feed the post, and when that doesn't work, some poor guard is forced to jack up a bad shot. This team plays offense like the 1990s Jody Conradt teams. It works against the weak sisters of the poor, but the game has moved on.

We were outmanned today, but Dr D was right: for TX to have had a chance the game needed to be slowed down. Stanford early on showed how to beat UConn, but we cannot execute in the half court. Teams reflect the philosophies of their coaches. This team makes such poor decisions with the ball, because Aston has a very low basketball IQ, which was utterly exposed today. There is almost never a game plan or in game adjustments. The video of the practice for the UConn game is laughable. Watch it: too little too late.

    Just the facts ...

Like clockwork the coward popped back up. No surprise you were in hiding after the win against Cal. The good news is that you'll be in the witness protection program again all of next year because this team is going to win a lot games and be very successful. You talk about stanford, you mean the same stanford that runs the exact same ball screen pick & roll offense that we run. The same stanford that the low basketball iq coach Aston beat, funny how that works. But I understand you have to get it all out while you can because you know it will probably be your last time posting on this board. The team isn't going to be losing very much next year or in the future. Getting to the sweet 16 in her 3rd year without her best player for the first time in 11 years, you're right that is just the facts.

Wow TxTreefan that was ugly. And that's saying something from a poster like me who unfortunately trashed Aston before giving her a chance. Even Geno said yesterday "we didn't win many tournament games my first few years here"

Aston made the Sweet 16 in her third season. This loss was disappointing - even embarrassing - but to not give any credit for the accomplishments that led to this moment? Quite frankly, your comments are about as useful as a fart in a fan factory.

    Made the Sweet Sixteen:
    Geno - 6th season
    Mulkey- 5th Season
    Staley - 4th Season
    Aston - 3rd Season

Hattis already has a national title in volleyball. She has one year of volleyball eligibility left; she is not going to beat out All-Americans Molly McCage and Chiaka Ogbogu. She will have to compete with Mirta Baselovic and incoming freshman stud Morgan Johnson for playing time. Sara seems like a very hard worker, but not sure it's in the cards for her to excel in volleyball based on the depth chart.

In hoops, she has two season of eligibility remaining. If she gives up volleyball and devotes all her training time to hoops, I think she has a chance to see much more playing time. And, she can grow with the program and make a bigger impact over the next two seasons.

wcbbnut --- I'm so glad you did that research and found out when coaches made the Sweet 16. Helps put things in perspective.

Wow. Baylor went out and Kim didn't remove any clothing or anything.

I wonder if she slapped any Catholics on the way out?

Most of the times a Baylor player was called for an obvious foul, they display shock, especially Niya Johnson and Sune Abuke. Glad there will be no Mulkey in the Final Four again.

I agree, not sorry Baylor is out. Oh, and Nina Davis was not nearly so snarky/smug tonight! Lol!

Same difference. In bb she would have to beat out Imani and Kelsey.

She's already ahead of Mirta on the depth chart and an incoming freshman will not beat her out.

She's third on the depth chart in both sports. Basically it comes down to what sport she wants to play. I think she'll be successful in whatever she chooses.

I passionately hate Baylor, not because of Mulkey's histrionics or any of her players, but because they have such dominance over us in recent years. It gets tiresome. Next year, I hate to say it, they should be even better than this year's team. Mulkey always comes up with fabulous offensive players like Nina Davis. Over the last decade Texas has failed to recruit big time scorers or great shooters. I am not blaming anyone for that; it's just the way it's worked out. Some of it may be luck. Davis was a sensation her freshman year. Ariel Atkins, our top rated recruit, was good, not great. Personnel counts for 80% in basketball. Ours is getting better, but plainly isn't good enough yet. Aston deserves a lot of credit for getting us to the Sweet 16 in three years; but I reserve the right to suggest that perhaps her offensive strategy could be improved.... I love the team as much as anyone, but I reserve the right to be embarrassed by a 50 point blowout. This stuff doesn't have to get so personal.

I was just able to listen to the post-game news conference. I was stunned by Karen's answer to the question as to why Imani played so little in the second half --- something about wasn't being effective, something about fatigue, and something about wanting to get a fresh body in the game. If it wasn't about a tweaked leg, then this reasoning doesn't fly for me. We were not going to win, but Imani could have increased our rebounding total and maybe gotten a few baskets. She is our star post, and you just don't pull her for most of the second half without ever seeing the floor again. I did love Haddis in the game. I don't think we got the full story. I still think it was about being careful about injury. I hope so, or else I've lost some confidence in Aston's judgment.

You're right, you have a right to your opinion. I just don't like trolls that come on here when the team loses but are as quiet as church mice when the team does things that haven't been done in over a decade. I don't dislike baylor because of the winning, I dislike baylor because of the petty, immature coach that they have. And yes, they will be good next year but so will we. I don't have a problem with teams that win, in order to be the best we have to beat the best, and that is what they have been in the conf for years. We will agree to disagree when it comes to the offensive strategy of the game. You also can be embarrassed by the 50 point lose but what I would tell you is to get in line. Every fan base in the country is embarrassed after playing Uconn whether it's getting blown out by 30 or 50 points, it's all the same.

She did have the top 3 buttons of her blouse unbuttoned to start the game, but she'd buttoned up 2 of them by halftime.
