It is being reported by CBS that Smart and Patterson are in negotiations. Hopefully, Patterson can pull off the Smart hire.

Talked to a close friend who works in a newsroom in Richmond (never thought i would use that contact for UT sports news). He talked to their sports department and the word is that Smart would probably accept UT if offered. However, they said they are unaware of any offer or contact as of this evening.

He's been to the final four in this decade. With considerably less talent.

He can pick up right where Barnes left off, maybe a new record for one-and-done tournament appearances...

I'll call it now. If he comes here the program will go backwards. Not a good choice.

As I understand it, they may be talking, but I think the guy from Wichita State wasn't available yet. I'd be surprised if they don't talk to anyone else before making a decision. But who knows, they may announce tomorrow...

He was available to talk to Alabama yesterday in Wichita. From reports Texas' checkbook ends at Alabama's starting point so I would not count on Marshall.

But I've also seen sources (not UT sources) that have said Marshall has basically said "not going to happen". It's certainly possible that he's willing to listen to them, but is not going to pull the trigger until he talks to Texas. We'll see I guess, but my hope is that we'll at least talk to the guy and take a shot.

I have never seen a VCU game. My basketball literacy is lacking. As I understand it, the full court defense means no free walk up to the half court line. The progress of the opposing team is contested from the inbound, on? I can see that generating some fast break scoring against teams that don't protect the ball, but doesn't it spread your team out and make scoring more difficult? If they break the press, aren't you at a numbers disadvantage? This sounds like an approach for matching up against teams with more talent. Someone who knows what they're talking about should tell me how wrong I am.

If the full court press is used to even the odds playing teams with more talent (which I don't know if this is true) then perhaps he (or whoever comes here) will be able to land more talent when recruiting to the flagship university of the 2nd most populated state in the union which happens to produce big talent every year. Then a good coach would be flexible enough to strategize game plans to fit matchups and players' skills. One would think, maybe? :bevo:

If Smart turns down Texas, the Longhorns likely will turn their attention to Utah's Larry Krystkowiak and Xavier's Chris Mack

Patterson canned Barnes for them or Lucas or Avery Johnson? If there is any credence to Seth Davis saying talks are on going with Avery Johnson, Patterson is giving a big FU to the fan base, etc.

As it's been stated on here many times before, Patterson is a CEO first. The upper echelon bball priority school coaches (Izzo, Calipari, Pitino, Williams, Self, Krzyzewski etc...) are unattainable. Which shifts us into the next best talent pool...and their entry level price tag has entered into the $3M+ zone. Patterson is looking for a short term bargain guy; an opportunistic-add value solution vs. core-core plus guy. Low budget, low risk. I think he's hiring solely based on economics. Ultimately, because of that I think he's going to go with a booster hire/NBA reject like Avery or Krystkowiak...

The Smart deal would have been done by now if he was a legit contender. The problem is it takes two to tango. I don't think that guy will ever leave VCU.

I would be fine with any of the three. My top choice is close between Smart and Marshall, Avery would not be a bad hire. Avery has an NBA championship as a player and went to the finals as coach of the Mavs. I like the youth/enthusiasm of Smart, the track record of Marshall, and like everything about Avery except lack of college coaching experience.

With about 8 games left in this season, VCU was ranked 14th and leading their conference. Then their star PG tore his ACL and the team struggled the rest of the way. They did win their conference tournament.

All Shaka has done at VCU is win and with that success he is recruiting at a high level.

If Patterson hires someone with only NBA experience, Texas Basketball will be a laughingstock which is right in line with the clown show administration of Steve Patterson.
