It was time for a change but Patterson crapped the bed on how he handled this one

I agree, but the point was about our stagnant offensive schemes over the years.

There are better ways than telling someone "you are not fired... just kidding."

I think it's easy to toss around "retread" and "tired old" labels, too. But I continue to argue, "There is NOTHING like having the appearance of being fired unfairly WHILE appearing to be oh-so-loyal."

His current record isn't so great, and this year's might be His Worst Coaching Performance Ever because of the early season high considerations his squad received.

In the world of "What Have You Done For ME Lately", Barnes needs some great banner to wave, and it's not going to be his recent record.

I wouldn't be at all shocked to learn this was all a put-up job. Face it, EVERY coach in EVERY sport is facing a firing. This season? Next? EVERY coach is on a hot seat. EVERY coach understands "I can be fired." It's only a matter of when, and how.

What's the best way to be fired? And how does a Firing Method impact the Next Hiring Options?

This is a Win Win for both Barnes and Patterson. Patterson gets to insist that he's a tough guy. Barnes gets to insist, "With my record!! How can they do that?!!" Du-uh... just don't look at THIS YEAR'S record. Or the recent ones.

Now, he never needs that. "I'm soooo loyal, too!"

(By the way - I'd also argue that just about every big school AD is about to be fired, too...)

There's also no good way to break up with someone, but handing them an ultimatum you know and hope they won't comply with and then when they turn it down, saying "Well in that case, we're done", is definitely an even less good way.

I think he should have complied with it and hired some better/proven assistants a long time ago. There's no way an offense consisting of standing around can consistently win. How about after 17 plus years of experience tweak the offense. Everybody could see there had to be something changed and he should have been confronted with it a long time ago.

Apparently TN didn't think Barnes was doing it wrong :smokin:

I guess TN will find out soon enough. I'll be interested to see what RB can do up there.

4 coaches in 6 years. Of course they would take him. I think he will change things up now and do well.

Yeah I'm not sure Tennessee is the yardstick for assessing coaching talent right now.

I don't think we know yet, we'll have an answer in 2-3 years
