Good luck to her, I'm also sure this is going to effect Didi Richards recruitment as well.

I hope not. I know they are good friends but Didi is only a sophomore so they wouldn't play together regardless. Didi is also really good friends with Jordan Hosey.

Just saw a tweet that Didi has in fact decommited.

Wow was I wrong. I don't like the direction this is going...Collier, Jones, Cox, and Richards all in the same week!

That's too bad about Nekia; she has a lot of potential. But, in 2 seasons, she has spent a lot of time injured, or on the bench. When she did see court time, she was very effective, and IMO, was our best 3-point shooter; but, she couldn't stay on the court very long due to a lack of conditioning. Unless she was going to make the commitment to improve her conditioning, the next two seasons at Texas (or anywhere else) will most likely be more of the same, unfortunately. Perhaps she will end up at A&M or Houston; maybe LSU.

Still, her departure hurts us even more at the power forward spot.

Unfortunate that Didi has decommitted; but, better now than closer to NSD in November 2017. If she is having doubts, she shouldn't be committed, IMO.

Everything is going to work out for them and the program. I like it for the program because it gives coach Aston and her staff the ability to evaluate more players, expecially guards/wings that can really shoot. I also won't be surprised if there is another transfer.

rattfatt, was Nekia the "big" transfer you mentioned in the roster thread? Or, was that about someone else? Any chance of incoming transfers or Spring signees?

She always provided a spark when she entered the game, which sadly wasn't often enough due to ongoing injury issues. I hope she continues her rehab and has a chance to play somewhere else, if her body cooperates. Best of luck to her whatever the future holds.

No, she was not the player that I was referring to. I think you and couple of other posters hit the nail on the head of who I was referring to. But to be honest I don't know any more than the rest of us. I just try to think about these things a lot and put 2an2 together. When you do that a lot of it becomes common sense.

well, we are down to 15 schollie players on the roster. Sad to see Nekia leave. Best wishes to her wherever she ends up and in whatever she does.

This makes me sad, Nekia was my favorite player but you are right, she needed to make a better commitment to her fitness. Good luck to her wherever she ends up.

I just found this out and am so bummed. She was my favorite player on the team. I never knew for sure if the reason she didn't get more minutes was her conditioning or just the coach's choice. I'll miss her passing and BB IQ, her 3 point shooting and her low post moves. Well, everything. This has got to sink in. Has she said where she is going? Probably somewhere to get more minutes.

I wonder if this was one of those so-called 'mutual' decisions. I guess none of us know what the prognosis is regarding her injury, or whether there were concerns that fitness might make long term recovery problematic (or re-injury more likely?). But I do see where there could be questions about continued use of a scholarship for a player that might only be able to contribute a limited number of minutes, given how full the roster is (and how many top recruits are either committed to or considering the program). As said above, it was very likely a two-way street, with Nekia perhaps wanting a guarantee of more playing time, and the program being unable to provide that given fitness and health concerns. But she is a fierce competitor and no doubt wants to play, and be a significant factor somewhere. I really hope it works out for her, and will be rooting for her no matter where she ends up.

Saw this coming. Watching her play in HS and talking to both hers and opposing coaches she has had a terrible attitude. Never got a whiff of this when she stepped on the 40 acres, she was never anything but awesome and encouraging. But lack of playing time (players always think they should play more) had to get under her skin a bit. Wish her the very best in the future. Also, if you look at Jalie Mitchell's presser, this is the player she was referring to.

From my view from the outside, I honestly don't think a lack of playing time would be her reason for leaving. She started her freshman season injured, IIRC. When she did see the court, she had to be spelled pretty quickly. This past season, the injuries were still there. But, with Nneka injured, and Brianna injured, Nekia was getting more playing time inside. She was getting calls for a lot of fouls, so that also impacted her minutes.

Regardless, everyone will move one. We need more depth at power forward. I expect to see a lot of Jordan Hosey, but we will still be somewhat undersized; but, quicker and perhaps create some mismatches for defenses. Maybe Aborowa will surprise at PF, but I still think she ends up at Center.

As we all saw firsthand, injuries have a way of messing with depth.

I would actually like to see Hosey on the wing more. We're already 4 deep in the paint which is a decent number. Imagine a lineup for a few minutes a game with Imani, Kelsey, Hosey, Ariel and Lashann all on the floor at the same time. Thats as big a lineup as you'll find in the country for a team not named South Carolina. Huge huge advantage.

Imani, Kelsey, Hosey, Ariel and Lashann all on the floor at the same time would definitely be our big lineup. But, based on foul trouble, we don't get a lot of Imani and Kelsey together.

Our quickest and most athletic lineup would probably be Imani, Jordan, Ariel, Lashann, and Brooke (although Brianna could fit in there, too).

At PG, we return Brooke and Celina. So, I'd expect to Lashann get minutes at both PG and SG.

Jordan will be very important, she's the perfect pf for this team. The teams in our conference don't play a traditional pf, most teams in our conference play a guard at the pf position. Because of that Jordan has the ability to guard the perimeter at a decent level and also on the offensive end take the opposing player down low and score in the paint. It will also allow Brianna to move back to the guard position.

A well-used redshirt year could be the very best thing for Nekia. I would have enjoyed seeing that at Texas, but it is not to be. She could be a great boost to North Texas, if that is agreeable to all parties.

An emerging Sarah Hattis, and Hosey available for the 4 if needed, could change that dynamic. The last Big 12 game I remember seeing Sarah play in, she made these beautiful moves to the basket and missed the easy shots! The next time I saw her, she was knocking down shots against UConn. It isn't hard to see why the coaches wanted her full-time -- great attitude, ready to compete when called upon. She is a fairly fierce rebounder also.

@hoopsalot Jalie alluded to the fact that this is something that UNT wouldn't look at doing. Great example of professional courtesy.

I was hoping Nekia would have transferred to track full time but maybe her knees were just not there. As much as I liked her she was not the PF we needed. She just did not have the rebounding capabilities. We need some height at the 4 not just size. Coach Aston said the numbers would work out. Who knows what was asked of Nekia behind the scenes? I don't think she would have left Texas otherwise.

That is the same thing I thought @Ellis21d which also explains why Didi would also decommit.

We'll see about Hattis emerging. I'm skeptical, but hope to be wrong. Watching her on the basketball court reminds me of her on the volleyball court. Great effort and enthusiasm and well trained but not a good match up against talented players. Hopefully, a full off season focused on basketball will help her contribute next season.

Well, she looked great against UCONN...I believe they have one or two talented players on their squad. Kidding aside, I understand what you're saying, and guess we'll have to wait and see how things turn out. We all recall that she was a top recruit in both sports in HS, but ranked higher in VB. But I think she might actually be more of an impact player in BB at the collegiate level. It's also fair to say she would have likely been a starter for all but a handful of top programs in VB; I'm really happy she's making this transition, and hope we see great things from her next season.
