I think a few plays in the first quarter, but handed off every time. At least it looked like a zone read hand off to me.

Nice series by Swoopes. Until the last pass.

Has anyone heard the estimated attendance? I'm guessing 25-30k. Pretty good crowd.

    Haven't heard, but I'll go for 39,782.

@Vol Horn 4 Life, how's the weather? Is it pretty muggy? Any wind?

Overcast with a light breeze and humid. The breeze is keeping it feeling good though.

Offense looked better. To many drops by the receivers. Wish they would have run a little more. Both Freemans look like players.

Some of the young guys look good on D. Edwin Freeman, Bonney, Poona Ford.

After the game, Daje had to hold the ball and roll across the field. When we were leaving, he was still doing it.

    My takeaways:
    • Oline looked good most of the day
    • QBs had no problems getting/understanding the plays
    • Swoopes looked better at times, same-ol-same-ol at times
    • Heard looked better than Swoopes at times, about the same at times
    • Leonard had waaaay too many drops
    • D Foreman looked really good
    • Tired of waiting on Daje
    • Tempo was good
    -----
    • Malik!
    • Echols really impressed
    • Bonney looked good overall
    • Jinkens still stinks
    • Freeman's going to be really good
    • Hughes had some very good plays
    • Cottrell lived up to the praise he's received this Spring
    • Would've been nice to have seen all the DL

Before and after today, I would make Heard the starting QB.

I assumed he was being punished for his miscues.

It did seem like it was making him dizzy. He had trouble getting up and then had to get his bearings together, before he started again.

The good news - Swoopes' 2015 spring game performance was significantly better than the 2014 game.
The bad news - Swoopes' looked like his 2014 season - good and bad - inconsistent.

Heard looked good for a red shirt freshman. If he continues to improve during the next 4 months, he should be the starting QB.

But Charlie Strong sure seemed impressed by Swoopes' performance.

@Godz40acres He was doing it in the end zone when I saw him right as we were leaving. I didn’t see this one on the field.

I guess Charlie is not jacking around about protecting the ball.

    My takeaways ------

    1. Heard was quite impressive in his short to mid passing game. Not only does he have good touch but he is quickly recognizing the open receiver and accurately putting the ball in the right place for the receiver most of the time. In his run acceleration and quickness, he is adding another aspect of the game over TS that the defense has to worry about. In the first touchdown JH showed an instinct and a fast follow through that you do not see from TS. However, JH may still have a little too much "happy feet" and may choose to run more than he needs to . It is difficult to say how JH will do in the mid to long passing game because there was not that much evidence to suggest one way or another. That last long completion in the second half was a nice throw but there were others that could have been miscommunication with the receiver, or he tried to force the ball between two defenders. If you consider that this was his first performance on display, if he continues to progress at this rate, I have no doubt that JH will be the starting QB by mid-season. For a first effort, JH is cool under pressure when faced with pressure from the defense.

    2. Swoopes' work in the weight room shows. He has bulked up more and , with his size, will be difficult to bring down. Although the zone read was missing in this game because of the no-touch rules with the QB, TS will bring an added dimension for the defense to worry about when the offense is 5-10 yards from the goal line in the red zone. TS is handling pressure from the defense better than last year, but his passing is still inconsistent, although he is not as much off target as last year. He shows evidence that he has taken it to the next level from what we saw in 2014; but is that going to be good enough to win? Both QBs show a good handle on this up-tempo offense, at least for the simplified version that was shown in this spring scrimmage.

    3. The OL was not consistently opening up space for the runners. At times you could not tell whether the Oline was not good or the defensive line was that much better. It is difficult to say which. Foreman is definitely the second string RB now and makes the decision to take him with his brother as a very smart one. Donte looked good in both receiving and running the ball. We will have to wait and see about that new freshman RB coming this fall. Foreman will at least be good competition for Warren.

    4. Daje was not being show cased during this game. He looks to have picked up good weight and will be harder to bring down in the fall.

    5. There is a lot of hope present with the new DBs. Echols, Bonnie, Hughes, and Freeman were flying around all over the place. Malik is quite an unusual-looking player for someone who is not even a freshman yet. When he has a definite assignment like when he is blitzing, he really looks good. There are times though that he does not yet know what to do and is waiting for the play to develop ---- not sure if they are testing him in a new philosophy now. He still needs time to develop his instinct as an LB. BUT what a physique for a freshman !!

    6. Except for the Heard to Lorenzo connection, there did not seem to be a WR standing out as a star today. The Horns still do not have a passing game to the tight ends. The short passing game looks sharper than last year.

    7. It is hard to tell about the future of the DL from today. Cottrell -- Cottrell --Cottrell -- WOW !

    8. If injuries do not cripple the team in the fall, we will go at least 8-4. However, look out for the inexperience from the youngsters. Real good teams will take advantage of them.

Has anyone seen attendance numbers for today? There had to have been 25,000 there. The west side looked packed, and a good crowd on the east side as well.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Some comments and take-aways from the game today.

    1. Agree with Bevo Beef that this team should win at least 8 games next fall if they avoid the injury bug. QB will again be the key.

    2. DKR several times made players that fumbled in a game, carry a football everyday on campus for a week as punishment. I suspect CS or perhaps one of the other coaches made Daje do the roll today as punishment for his 2 fumbles.

    3. I agree with several of you about what you saw today re: the 2 QB's. Both had some very nice throws today but both forced balls to receivers that were not open. Both were inconsistent at times. Bottom line, IMO Heard has made up the gap and I think he is even with Swoopes. However, if a game started tomorrow I am not sure CS would throw the keys to Heard. I think CS would start Swoopes.

    4. I do think JH could get better in the next 4-5 months and might start Sept. 5th. I think JH as more upside than TS. To me his biggest problem is happy feet in the pocket. Too often he looks at only one receiver and he is ready to bail or throw it away. Some of that could be the fault of the OL.

    5. I think the OL is better than last year but how much it is hard to say in a scrimmage like this.

    6. Tim Cole at LB had some good hits today and Malik Jefferson is a beast - his natural position is outside LB, but give time he could be a monster at MLB.

    7. RB Foreman was very impressive today - lot's of fighting for extra yards and he holds on to the ball well. I thought Foreman ran better than Catalon today.

    8. Leonard had some good catches today and several big drops. I think he is going to be a very good WR given time.

    9. John Bonney was impressive, coaches son, smart, plays hard and blows people up. I predict he will start as a RS Freshman on Sept. 5th.

    10. I think the up tempo is going to help the offense this fall while being be tough for our opponents. It seemed to gas our D at times today despite the coaches rotating some players in on the next series.

    11. Mitchell Becker impressed me with his punting - boomed several.

I'll put one more name out there, which is Jason Hall. Guy looks like a future NFL player to me.
I'm glad for all of your confidences--maybe I'll watch the replay. In person, it did not feel like a good team on that particular day, but it's hard to tell, I suppose.

After watching the game twice, I don't agree that Heard has made up ground to draw even with Swoopes. But he is close. Where I saw Swoopes ahead is throwing the deep ball. I didn't see much touch or accuracy on Heard's deep throws. Now its true that there weren't many attempts, but still Swoopes shows more confidence and consistency throwing deep.

Heard needs more reps and needs to really work on his passing. I think he will only get better, and I do believe he will see significant playing time next fall. Heard reminds me a little of Boykin at TCU. Remember how much Boykin improved from his first year to the next. He was very unsure, and not good the first year. Last year he was terrific. I think Heard can do something similar. And I think there is no way to avoid growing pains with an inexperienced, unpolished QB.

Also, Swoopes looks leaner, quicker and generally more confident running the ball. It looks like Swoopes has put in a lot of work in the weight room and on the practice field. Swoopes will be much better next year. Actually, I think we are going to be ok at QB. We have two guys who have a very good upside. I hope both put in lots of hours working with their receivers (on their own of course) this summer.:hookem2:
