I think it makes sense for the Horns to take their time searching for the right person to replace Coach Mitchell. Like Moooooo, I had some initial reservations about our assistants when they were hired. But this team has made tremendous progress the past three seasons. Whether in terms of overall results, NCAA results, conference tourney performance or success on the recruiting trail, each year has been markedly better than the one before. And equally important, all of our current assistants seem well liked, both by players and the fans.
That said, I don't think the impact that certain key assistants have had on the success of many top programs can be overstated. I would like to see us hire an experienced nuts-and-bolts type of coach. Someone that can really focus on fundamentals, an area where I think a different outlook, and new energy might be helpful. I do understand wanting someone with ties to the program, but I think we have that in many areas associated with the team. I see this as an opportunity to really build upon what our staff has done thus far, and add another layer - and fresh perspective - to the mix.
