There are reports that she maybe the leading candidate, if so I hope she gets it and would wish her well.

Would hate to see her go but I wish her well in her coaching career. At least UNT is part of the UT family.

    Could be the leading candidate:

I have to admit I wasn't fan of her hiring for Texas as she only had like 4 years coaching experience (3 with Coach A). But, it looks like she's done a great job coaching Nneka, Imani and Kelsey. She is also our recruiting coordinator, so her departure could have an effect on committed players and those we are recruiting.

You could say that she has some strong ties to UNT. :smile1:
I would hate to see her go but she is the one coach that I thought would be likely to leave if an opportunity presented. And this is her alma mater. She is an excellent recruiter. This would be a great step up for her.

I think coach George is the recruiting cordinator now.

If this is the case, I wish her well, and I hope it opens the door for Edwina to return to The 40 Acres. When I witnessed her coaching on TCU's bench this season, I kept thinking she belongs with us.

Congrats to coach Mitchell. One of the hardest workers I've met in quite some time. This would be a great opportunity for us to take a page out of North Texas' book and bring home one of our greats. There are more than a few options out there (Kamie Ethridge; Clarissa Davis; Edwina Brown; Stacy Stephens) just to name a few. There is just something to be said and learned for our young ladies coming directly from someone who had success in that very same uniform.

Stacy Stephens was on the staff but left for another job last year I believe. Heather Schreiber was another good player from the 02-03 FF team that could be a good option.

I'd love to have Jaime Carey back. I did notice that Rekha Patterson (former Baylor Assistant who left last year) just started following Karen on twitter. Not sure if it means anything but interesting timing...I'm sure Kim would just love that!

I was just going to say that it would be awesome to get Jaime Carey...she was an outstanding guard and that's where we need help.

Congrats to coach Mitchell, she will do great things at UNT. I also think Rekha Patterson would be a great hire, she knows the lay of the land. And has spent a lot time recruiting the same players that we are now going after from the Dfw area.

Really hate to see her go, but she has worked hard to prepare for this opportunity. I expect her to do well at her alma mater. :hookem:

As long we are talking about possible Texas exes coaching, don't forget about Tai Dilliard, currently an assistant coach at Houston and the defensive star of that 2003 Final Four team.

@BabHorn I was literally getting on here to say that. I think any of the aforementioned would be great additions. Clarissa Davis would give us the most, in terms of recruiting and coaching ability but I would be happy with either

When Coach A hired her staff, it was very inexperienced at the collegiate level, except for Travis Mays. Jalie had like 2-3 years experience, and some was for Coach A at UNCCC or UNT. George brought lots of AAU coaching experience and connections; seems like his biggest asset has been his recruiting, but not positive. Regardless, congrats to Jalie

I just want the most qualified applicant to be hired, regardless of their connection to Texas. While it shouldn't be a requirement, since Coach A already has 2 male assistants, I'd expect the new hire to be female.

My ideal candidate would be Imani's aunt, Trisha Stafford-Odom. She was a dynamite recruiter at North Carolina. I think she is currently the head coach at a small college in Missouri (Concordia?).

Interesting thought. Hadn't even thought about her. Really, haven't thought about who might be a candidate.

If you look at some of the most successful programs in the country, they're all coached, or have someone on the bench that wore the uniform (Uconn, ND, Tenn, UNC, etc.) I think that's more than a coincidence. No one can talk about what it feels like to be great at a particular place better than someone who's walked in those shoes. That most often times translates into coaching. I wouldn't be disappointed if the person is not an alumni, but I certainly think that would be a welcome addition.

You always want to make sure you find the right person, but I am curious as to what is taking so long. I am sure that there is no shortage of applications to fill the asst coaching position..........we are in the midst of a recruiting period, and we're one short on the road. I admit I am a bit concerned.

Concerned for what? If coach Aston isn't worried about it, then you shouldn't be. Most of the aau teams play in the same tournaments anyway, so a lot of it is one stop shop. Coach Aston will find the right person for the job.

Multiple coaches rarely attend the same event unless its nationals. So being down one coach is impacting us on the road.

What does that have to do with multiple teams being at the same tournament? If coach Aston, George, or Mays is at a tournament by themselves, they still can watch multiple players and teams at one tournament, meaning one stop shop.

Meaning that while we're short handed that is an entire tournament (group of players) not being evaluated.

I get what you're saying, but we're recruiting big time players. Most big time players play on the same aau team. For example, look at Cy fair elite. They have Didi Richards, Joyner Holmes, Chelsea Dungee, Nancy Mulkey all on the same team. Lauren Cox, Charlie Collier and a slew of other top notch players on Texas United.

I absolutely get what you're saying. So while one coach is somewhere in Texas or Oklahoma watching them......another could be in California evaluating the next Imani or Jordan Canada or Ashley G. And then another somewhere in Philidelphia scouting Christina A. and her teammate that we're also after........I think we're agreeing on the fact that great players play in clusters, all I'm saying in addition to that is that the clusters are very much spread out and require multiple bodies.

And I don't think a few weeks minus 1 assistant coach is going to cripple a program, I guess I'd just like to see it as a priority and filled sooner rather than later given the particular time period we're in.

I think it makes sense for the Horns to take their time searching for the right person to replace Coach Mitchell. Like Moooooo, I had some initial reservations about our assistants when they were hired. But this team has made tremendous progress the past three seasons. Whether in terms of overall results, NCAA results, conference tourney performance or success on the recruiting trail, each year has been markedly better than the one before. And equally important, all of our current assistants seem well liked, both by players and the fans.

That said, I don't think the impact that certain key assistants have had on the success of many top programs can be overstated. I would like to see us hire an experienced nuts-and-bolts type of coach. Someone that can really focus on fundamentals, an area where I think a different outlook, and new energy might be helpful. I do understand wanting someone with ties to the program, but I think we have that in many areas associated with the team. I see this as an opportunity to really build upon what our staff has done thus far, and add another layer - and fresh perspective - to the mix.

I forgot that there is a pretty decent former post player on the staff right now. Wonder if Fran Harris would be interested in coaching?
