Outside linebacker Cameron Townsend is ready for Austin (Texas). The four-star linebacker checks in at 6-foot-1, 210-pounds. Townsend uses speed to his advantage. He is good in pass coverage assignments and can cover slot receivers. Additionally, he flies to the football and is aggressive against the run. He is a big-hitter and a sound tackler.

Townsend is part of a fantastic 2015 linebacker group for the University of Texas. He joins Malik Jefferson, Anthony Wheeler, Cecil Cherry and Breckyn Hager. Townsend is looking forward to this opportunity ahead.

”I’m most looking forward to playing football at a high level, at a big time program and making plays, that’s all,” Townsend said. “My main focus lately is making sure I come into the summer in good shape and at about 215-pounds. I haven’t been working any techniques lately, I’ve just been focusing on getting bigger, stronger and faster.”

”The fans can expect someone that is going to play at a high level on the field and be a role model off the field.”

Texas recruited Cameron Townsend to play at weakside linebacker, a position where his speed and coverage skill would be best utilized.

At Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, Townsend played left outside linebacker and excelled at forcing ball carriers to the sideline with his speed and dropping back in coverage. He will be asked to play a similar role at Texas, but the 6-foot, 195-pound linebacker also knows he needs to improve his solo tackling. He will have the perfect opportunity in practice each day thanks to a fellow incoming freshman running back.

“I have to work on filling the A-gap and hitting people like Chris Warren, who can actually run me over,” Townsend said with a laugh.

“In my high school I had good relationships with my coaching staff and teammates, and I want to bring some of that chemistry to Texas,” Townsend said. “I want to make everybody feel like family.”

Townsend has visited Austin plenty of times since signing day in February, most recently for Texas’ spring game, but he can’t wait to move in for good.

“Every time I go up there I get more eager to get up there permanently,” Townsend said. “I’m looking forward to getting up there and making some new friends and winning some games.”
