Garrett Williams, a left hander will pitch the ninth, for OSU. Johnson leads off, at the top of the order, batting righty, leads off, for the Horns. He can't check his swing, on an inside breaking pitch, the K is one gone. Baker bats righty, with an out recorded. A liner to left is run down, by the left fielder Green, on a nice play, for two away. Hinojosa bats righty, with two outs. He walks, to put a runner on. Barrera bats righty, with a man on. Might as well play some add on. A very wild pitch over the catcher's head, sends Hinojosa to second. He K's swinging, on a low pitch, to end the frame. Texas is three big outs from the Tourney title and a regional, they lead 6-3, to the bottom of the ninth.
Bellow tries to close it out, for the Horns, in the ninth. Sluder will lead off, for the Cowboys, batting right handed. He takes a fast ball, under the hands, for a big first out K. Case bats righty, with one away. A grounder to short and the throw by Hinojosa is wide, but Jones comes off the bag, makes the tag, two gone. One out to go. Chappel bats righty, with two outs. He walks on four pitches, for a base runner. Green bats lefty, at the top of the order, one on and two outs. A full count and the runner is off and a high pop up and Hinojosa has it, game over. Texas wins the game 6-3, the Big 12 Tournament, and will go to a regional! Simply amazing, what else can you say. Need a break, back for some words about this great run.
Thank you, NB!!!! Now get that dang last post posted as we can't wait to see if we're doin' the Texas Two-Step. ; )
Well since I've been told that this Augie fellow is old, washed-up, and "lost it", he must have been really good whenever he "had it."
Perhaps, instead of Kirk "Bowels" calling for the head of the winningest and most intellectual (and yes, funniest) baseball coach in NCAA history, Kirk should go the way of Marie Antoinette. "Let him eat......crow!"
Wonder if we land in aggyville? If so, I'll have serious family dilemma....1 kid at UT & 1 at Aggy! Please dear God, do NOT allow that to happen!!!
Texas was pitching it's way through the Big 12 Tournament, the usual and some not so usual suspects were doing the job. It was a minor miracle that this beat up and overused staff was able to do this, with some big efforts by freshmen. So far you had beaten teams, you thought you could, with that kind of pitching. It was a different animal today, in OSU. The second seeded Cowboys had all the advantages. A veteran team, that can hit and really field well, we thought. Kyle Johnston gets the start, a freshman, with well known control problems. It's like watching a time bomb waiting to go off, you thought, it never went off. He pitched really well, retiring 14 in a row at one stretch. Trouble was, there was as usually is the case, little run support, so Texas clings to a 1-0 lead. OSU scratches out a run in the sixth, to tie the game. Then they take the lead, without a hit, in the seventh, Johnston was done, but was brilliant. OSU has all the momentum, it seems like well, Texas did well, but you really didn't expect them to win, did you. Then a funny thing happened in the strange and pivotal eighth inning. Johnson leads off with a routine bouncer to short, it was booted, for an error. Two more errors and a some clutch hits leads to five unearned runs, Texas leads 6-2, and it's all over now, going Texas way, right. That would be a negatory, not so fast Bevo backers. French was spent and then a key Texas error and OSU is off to the races. The bases loaded, Kirby Bellows comes in. A flair drops in center, run scores, to make it 6-3, the bases loaded and still no outs. So now Texas is going to finally succumb and OSU will pull it out, in a virtual home game for them, the crowd all jacked up. No way, Cowboy comrades, a strikeout and a double play later, the inning is over. The Cowboys put up a mild two out threat, in the ninth, but nothing more. Texas completes the run through the Tournament and now are in a regional, who would have thunk that? I guess you could ask this old question. Do you believe in miracles? This wasn't exactly the USA beating the Russians in hockey, in the Olympics, but it was our own personal Longhorn Baseball miracle. It extends the season, sending Texas to a regional, more Texas Baseball and more titles is always reason to celebrate and on a Holiday weekend to boot. See you for more of the same next week, it's seems my work is not yet done.
Way to hang in Horns...surprised me for sure. Let's not go puffin' out our chests too hard for Augie...Okie State had a meltdown with those 3 straight little league errors that saved our bacon. Could've easily been three outs, then down to one at bat still trailing by 1. They blew it, we took advantage, and now we live to play another day. So yes, we are very proud of the team for doing the unimaginable. At the same time chest thumping for Augie is a little much. We did what we had to do with the almost hopeless situation we put ourselves in...congrats is in order. I'm just very glad for some upcoming playoff baseball excitement to remedy this grueling off-season.
One more thought, I really think the NCAA would enjoy sending Texas to College Station, as a three seed. That would be interesting, wouldn't it? I will say this again, that Skip guy, is in complete control of the pitching staff, Augie gave it to him years ago. He makes all the game decisions and recruiting. He is kind of good at it.
Why the hell did you let one of them go aggy? My God, parenting standards are really low on this board.
Woo hoooo!! 6-3 Horns! I did not expect to win the B12 tourney so this is a great surprise. Augie got them motivated for a last hoorah! On to regionals...
Well, long story! My son, who is a Sr at Westwood High Shool, was admitted to USNA, but got a medical DQ at the last minute due to an old back problem. He's one of these brainiac engineering type students. He applied at UT & A&M as back-up options....he got "capped" at UT engineering, but admitted to A&M's engineering school. We were 'all in' for Navy, but got blindsided with his med issue, so A&M was the only real back-up option. I never dreamed this would have happened as my kids are 4th generation UT. Still trying to digest this!!!!
To think, NB would have been packing up his typewriter for the summer and planning for a relaxing, unstressed no cardiac kids Texas Longhorn Baseball weekend in 5 days and now those plans are out the window. Looking forward to a few more threads hopefully and maybe even some maroon tears.
Was out all PM today but my good friend baoklhorn texted me with updates during the game. Wow, the Horns are tournament champs - congrats to the team an Augie. Time to rest, regain focusness and do something with this opportunity at the regional.
