Should Mack Brown be our AD in a few years?

Steve has been doing some dirty moves that will make horns hate him... But they will probably result in real profits for UT... What if he sticks around for a few years and then MB gets hired as AD? Would that be supported by fans? Once the wounds heal and Steve P make all the moves that MB wouldn't make.

If he's qualified, hell yes. Mack truly cares about the brand and image that is the University of Texas as well as the fans and Staff, Faculty and Students. He's proven this many times. That said, I don't know the qualifications, traits and skills needed to be an AD. I have to assume Mack has most already and could be honing them as we speak. He's been selected as part of that Dubai thing going on, has a national presence on television and I believe still resides in Austin. I respect the ever living hell out of Mack Brown so if he is of AD material, I want him here.

I think Mack would be an excellent AD.

Abe Lemons, who had a running feud with DeLoss Dodds (DKR had hired Lemons, as well as Gustufson when DKR was both HC and AD) once remarked (my best recollection of the exact words):

"DeLoss? He'll, he's AD, what does he know about coaching? He was a track coach at KSU. ....... 'Stand here, kid, wait until you hear the gun go off, then run like hell around the track as fast as you can until you get back.' ..... How much coaching does THAT take?"

Something like that. No opinion on Dodds or the current AD, just a funny recollection on ADs at UT.

And I agree, Mack Brown would probably be a better AD than he was as an HC at Texas. And he was a pretty good HC here.

Might he be better in some kind of fundraising role? I would be concerned about some of the past history in regards to previous hires and his performance reviews of folks on the staff. How about Mad Dog, Cleve Bryant, Greg Davis? An AD has to make tough decisions about coaches, who may be friends and nice guys, but if you're not winning or bringing in money something has to change.

While almost anyone would be an improvement over Patterson, you can't be serious after what he did during his departure? Mack Brown's association with The University of Texas should be limited to cashing the checks he gets for his departure.

I would, however, be ok with MB hanging out with Bill Powers on some golf course or country club bar telling each other how great they really are.

How about Gene Chizik, Will Muschamp, Dick Tomey, etc? The man would have not have won so many games over the years without any good assistants..... I mean, come on.

Really? A 5 win, 9 win, and two 8 wins seasons including two bowl wins means he is not allowed to be around. If that's the case, I guess Akers and McWilliams are not welcome either. Coach Strong better hurry up and get 10 win seasons and only 10 win seasons pretty quick.

Powers fired him, so I am not sure if that will happen.

    HTown,

It has absolutely nothing to do with wins and losses, but rather his actions the last two weeks prior to his firing. That set The University back ten and perhaps twenty years. We'll see over time.

As for Powers, sure he fired Brown, but it was a few days too late. Powers also defended MB to the bitter end until he was told "you're going too". "DO IT NOW!" Powers also botched the Oliver Luck deal. I liked Bill and totally supported him for the presidency, also against Governor Rickie, but he completely blew his final weeks of authority.

And, Mack should be gone from our University as soon as possible. Totally gone! I love the guy but its time to move on.

Probably at least five hundred years, if not more. It was just that bad.

Good grief, the melodrama here. UT football will be fine and will thrive again very soon.

I'd take Mack today if it meant rushing SP out before he alienates more donors and longtime season ticket holders. It's like having a horrible president. Even given a few more years, his absurd new policies being made before he goes will destroy our "We're Texas" ways for many years to come.

The dissolving and reshaping of our fanbase by pure dollars and cents tactics has no quick repairs available for the next guy who actually cares and respects those who backed the program for decades in both good and bad times. SP could care less about that.

At least Mack views this place as a family and respects the longstanding history and tradition of the University. This is not just another big corporation, "We're Texas" means something unique and special. He's hellbent on destroying that. The new culture he desires has deep pockets, yet will only say "We're Texas" when we're winning and it looks good. Fanbase for hire.

SP is all about the money...period. Nothing more than a cutthroat consultant making every decision looking at the income statement with zero regards for the sanctity of the institution and what made it great. Mack Brown would be a Godsend as a replacement. So would several others we could hire tomorrow to end the reign of this imposter.

In January of last year, I spoke to one of the members of the selection committee the day after Red McCombs made his idiotic criticism of Coach Strong. I asked if Mac had been considered for the AD position and he told me that idea had been nixed primarily due to Mac's poor recent record in hiring assistants. He felt that one of the AD's primary responsibilities was recruiting and hiring head coaches.

Mack did so much for this program, its hard to disagree with anything that brings him back here in some sort of capacity. That being said, and I know I'm opening myself up for big criticism and shot taking, but what has Patterson done that is so awful that he's under such fire?

I like both his hires. Charlie and Shaka seem like they are working diligently to turn football and basketball back to championship form. Its early to anoint either Coach as big successes just yet, but I do them as reasonable choices.

If Patterson serves five years here, seems like that is giving him a decent tenure, and if things aren't noticeably better, then raise the roof to serve him his walking papers.

    Cary,

Have you looked at the contracts Patterson gave this crowd? Tell me any school close to our status that has handed out those kind of contracts in football and basketball. Are you really ok with three year, fully paid guaranteed contracts to assistants?

How about paying KornFairy for Strong's phone number?

WE ARE THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS! We don't need KornFairy or little Chuckie NeinASS anywhere near our program, much less being paid for things Betty could have done for free when she was Deloss' secretary.

I might disgree with Sabrehorn on Mack Brown, but Sabrehorn hit the nail on the head. Not many are attacking the Strong or Smart hires, but the contracts they received are ludicrous. Strong is making as much as Mack Brown before he has won anything. Smart has a guaranteed 6 years for more than Barnes ever made before he has won anything. I think Smart will do well, but no one knows. How do you give ANY new coach a guaranteed 6 years for more than the last guy made? Aggy did this was Fran, and look how that worked at for them. Ended up in a lot of debt.

Due to football and basketball not winning big, ticket sales are down. Patterson is offsetting the massive salaries by raising the ticket prices and charging for parking. The Strong and Smart hires may very well prove to be wise hires, but paying new coaches that kind of money and giving any new basketball coach a guaranteed 6 years leading to higher ticket prices off of seasons that did not meet expectations is not wise.

(On a side note on our fans: I do not understand some of our fans that are okay with Strong's $5 million a year and Smart's $3 million a year before they have won anything, but are mad that 2 time national champion, coming off a 3rd place finish in the CWS and just won the Big 12 Tournament Augie Garrido makes $1 million a year.)

I thought Strong made $3 mil, and Sumlin making $5 mil.

Charlie Strong is the 5th highest paid coach at $5,000,270 behind only #1 Nick Saban ($7.16 million), #2 Mark Dantonio ($5.61 million), #3 Bob Stoops ($5.05 million) and #4 Kevin Sumlin ($5.006 million).

#6 Urban Meyer, who took over a team on probation coming off of a 6-7 season and has gone 12-0, 12-2, and 14-1 makes $4,536,640.

    #11 Gary Patterson makes $4,008,150.

    #12 Gus Malzahn makes $3,854,500.

    #14 Jimbo Fisher makes $3,591,667.

Is it fair to say we are not overpaying Charlie Strong at this point in time?

I do not trust Steve Patterson's negotiating skills.

Now Smart makes a guaranteed $3 million per year for 6 years regardless of performance.

I am in now way very business savvy. That said, could paying the salaries Texas pays now make future high profile hires, if necessary, more attracted to Texas? Flame away if that is idoitic.

I suspect both Strong and Smart both could have been brought on board for much less with some attractive performance-based incentives. If the contract details posted to this thread are accurate, that is just obscene money for the circumstances.

    HTown,

While I would love to lay all this crap (don't forget the ridiculous assistants contracts guaranteed for three years) at Patterson's feet, let us not forget that he did seek "professional assistance" from that bastion of scruples known as KornFairy.
