Kendell Jones ..... Shoemaker (Killeen, TX)
    4-star ..... DT ..... 6-4.5/334 ..... Alabama

Among the talented Lone Star State defensive tackles, none has as much physical upside as the freakish Jones, who is rightfully nicknamed "The Hulk." He's a bit raw, but because of his strength and good ball get-off, Jones projects as a potentially dominant two-gap player if he can refine his technique. [Lost the link to this analysis.]

    Per Scout:
A gifted specimen, who is quick and athletic for a player with his size. He is a bit raw as a prospect, but shows the explosion and get off of an elite level player. He is very strong at the point of attack... He sheds blocks well and is a run stop specialist.

    Per Rivals:
There are few guys who immediately draw attention like Jones. He walks onto the field and heads quickly turn. When the play starts he is like a bull in a china shop. His technique is not quite refined but there is no doubt he is a disruptive force. He makes going tough in the middle for any offense.

    Per IT:
Looks like Tarzan, plays like Godzilla. At 6-foot-4 and 350+ pounds, he’ll be immovable against most guard/center combos provided he keeps his pad level. He bends okay at the hips, though he often plays way too high and his quickness is limited to the straight-line variety. His lateral movement and change-of-direction are lacking for any other defensive line assignment, but his sheer strength and size are incredibly uncommon.

    I didn't do this one, but I wish I had - it's excellent.

This dude is a monster and he is damn physically imposing. No baby fat on this guy. He'd make a perfect 3-4 nose tackle at his size. I think he has more upside then Ed Oliver and he's a big Texas lean from everything I've read. Brick Haley would do wonders with the HULK thats for sure.

Only thing that concerns me, is that he chooses a side a lot of the time. Now, I understand that this could be part of Shoemaker's 3-4 scheme. Most 3-4 schemes utilize strong and weak slants as part of week to week gameplanning, but with a physical specimen like that, I would have him blow up the interior line and wreak havoc. You only saw it a few times on the highlight and it was effective, but can he do it against C's and G's that are essentially the same size? By the way, the Canyon center (red field) is only 5'8" 250.

The Opening's defensive line coaches selected Kendell Jones for the MVP award on Sunday.

    Per 247Sports:
Could that mammoth size (a ripped 6-5, 341 pounds) translate to functional ability on the field? It did on Sunday. Jones isn't going to do a lot laterally but as a nose guard, he's quick enough and explosive enough to get that initial first step to get to half a man and he's certainly powerful enough to penetrate following that initial movement. As a 3-4 defensive tackle, Jones would be a strong defensive foundation.

Per Scout via OB poster - Higdon's Sunday chat:
    • Had a very positive convo with DT Kendell Jones regarding the recent draft results and Louisville's success.
    • We're still in the mix with DT Jordan Elliott. He plays things close to the vest. Feels better about Jones.
    • "Kendell Jones has visited Texas 13 times so far... meaning... he will also be back for summer camp... then a UOV for a game then OV after season... making 16 trips to the University of Texas from one of the top players in America."

I really, really like this kid. I think by his soph season he'll be as good as, maybe better than, Ed Oliver. That is, unless Oliver comes to the 40 as well. ;)

    Per HD:
Many high school football players kept a close watch on the 2015 NFL draft, a draft where Charlie Strong and his Louisville staff had a huge impact. Time will tell if he and his staff have the same results from his first full class at Texas, but this is something Kendell Jones takes great comfort in.

”It shows me that Charlie can develop talent to get them into the NFL,” Jones said. “It’s not always guaranteed to get players to the NFL, but it gives you great confidence about that possibility.”

”I have a great relationship with Charlie Strong, and I am developing one with Brick Haley,” Jones said. “Coach Strong is cool and funny and Brick came from LSU and we are developing one, so it’s pretty good. Coach BJ is my main recruiter from Texas and he came to my game on Friday, so I was happy to see him. He keeps it real with talks about what I need to do with my grades and stuff.”

”Texas offered me early,” Jones said. “I have been on visits to Texas about 13 times. It’s a really good school. It’s a really big school and of course the players are all great and seeing Malcom Brown getting drafted was cool.”

I definitely see this kid's future as being a Maul Cop.

Jones committed to Alabama. All over the internet today.

That may be, but I think Charlie demonstrated last year that, unlike Mack, he and his staff will stay after a target who has "committed" to another school early.

A lot of time left for Charlie to work some of his magic on Jones... the kid is like a train once he starts.

Kendell Jones made headlines when he committed to Alabama in May, but he’s pretty open that his recruitment is not over. Jones said he plans to take visits this summer (official visits are possible as well). He’s expecting to wind up on UT’s campus at some point.

“Of course I’m going to go to some schools close like Baylor and Texas. And then I’m going to go out far like Arkansas,” Jones said. “Texas, they have a great coaching staff. Coach Charlie Strong has been on my case for a long while,” Jones said. “He’s been trying to get me over there, so I’m going to go down there and speak to him for a little bit.”

Though he’s keeping the door cracked a bit, Jones really does seem happy with his Alabama commitment and his relationship with the ‘Bama coaches.
