Smith was named the Miami Herald Defensive Player of the Year after exploding for 18 sacks and 73 tackles his junior season.

    Per HornSports:
Shemar Smith of Miami Jackson received a Texas offer today. The unheralded edge rushing prospect holds a few offers, but none are from a big name program.

I caught up with Smith this evening, and it's clear to see the offer made an impression on him. "It's definitely different from other programs" Smith said when asked what it was like to receive an offer from a program like Texas.

Smith says he had some contact with the Texas staff before prior to the offer and plans to visit sometime in the summer. Smith doesn't know much about the Texas program but says he's heard some things and is eager to learn more.

When I asked Smith where Texas stood for him now that they have offered, and he wasted no time telling me they are #1 on his list.

    Per Scout:
Fresh off a stellar 2014 campaign, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound defensive end wrought havoc off the edge for the 6-5 Generals, accounting for 73 tackles and an eye-popping 18 sacks on the year. Smith plays with a ton of physicality and has active hands to free himself off blocks.

The 2:45 mark epitomizes that south Florida spirit!

    Per Scout:
Shemar Smith is brimming with joy after reeling in a scholarship offer from Charlie Strong and the Texas Longhorns last Friday.

Smith plays with physicality and hits like a ton of bricks when making initial contact with his opponent. He has an impressive motor, as well as a reputation for proving a heavy dose of pressure behind the line of scrimmage.

Smith's speed and quickness at the snap of the ball really stands out, and it's no surprise that schools continue to pour into Jackson to get a glimpse of the hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end.

    ------------

At the end of the article there's a 2 minute video interview (Scout's videos are un-embed-able) with Smith about his Texas offer. Through all his smiling, this was my takeaway:
"I mean, I've been growing up watching the Longhorns. My daddy's a big Longhorns fan. So, it's just a bond already."

    Per Scout:
One student-athlete out of South Florida who has a clear-cut front-runner in their recruitment is Shemar Smith, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound hybrid defender who has the Texas Longhorns atop his list sailing into the 2015-16 campaign.

The Longhorns have already secured an official visit with Smith, who will be in Big 12 Country for Texas' clash with Oklahoma State on Sept. 26.

"That's my No. 1 school, but I haven't committed there yet," Smith said. "I'm going to wait until I officially visit to commit. I like the tradition of the Longhorns, and me and the coaches have a good bond. They talk about academics, so that's a plus right there."

The likes of Illinois, Kentucky, Oregon State and South Florida are heavily in the mix for Smith's services as well, but surpassing Charlie Strong and Texas will be a daunting task for Smith's additional suitors.

"(Texas is) pretty far ahead," Smith said. "There's a gap right now."
