We did have the Aggie's number at that time. To bad our coaching staff had a very severe case of shell shock when it came to OU. Examples: not allowing the most talented people on the team to play just because they were freshmen... the conservative horizontal play calling, etc.

It took JUNIOR year VY to finally change things.

I hardly fault Chris Simms for that. After all he and Major split reps on the 2000 debacle that started off the whole nightmare run of OU *** beatings and they both played AWFUL in that game (as well as every other single player) . I think OU's defense outscored our offense 2 to 1. After that OU had that game won a weeks in advance and it would not have mattered who started at QB.

That may be true, but Vince was the main reason for the debacle against OU the year before (a shutout). He sucked that game, completing only 8 of 23 passes for 86 yards (he was throwing behind receivers and at their feet). He fumbled twice (and El Ced fumbled once). Meanwhile, Adrian Peterson ran for 225 yards, yet the Sooners only scored 12 points. There are stories that our players were slamming their helmets against their lockers after the game because they were so pissed and frustrated by VY’s performance.

Exactly my point. The malaise w/r/t/ OU was so bad it even rendered sophomore year VY meaningless. It took junior Vince and 2005 before this team's edge was just so overwhelming that it shook the team out its collective shell shock. Credit the coaches for letting Vince be Vince in 2005, but they also need credit for the previous 5 years in which the game was lost before we even walked out of the tunnel.

I love Vince, but one of the greatest offensive lines ever assembled that allowed Vince to be Vince never seems to get credit.... nor the coaches who assembled and coached that offensive line.

This off-season is way too long. I thought Simms was long gone from my memory. And now he's fully resurrected and all because he basically implied wrongdoing at our university. This is not a time to praise the guy. If Texas was near and dear to him, he would've just kept it to himself. Or even just smirked when asked but never flat out said it. Some may see it as harmless, but in my eyes it was unnecessary and therefore chickenshit. Go Major!

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

I believe most of us hate the off-season.... I say we move on and not give Simm's legacy carcass any more attention.

Major got jobbed by the Jersey mafia. Anyone not intelligent enough to see that didn't go to UT!

The odd thing was that the year before he played a lot better despite the rest of the team (besides Roy) falling apart completely. That 2004 was the perfect storm of VY having an off day, frustration / lack of confidence making things worse, and OU's defense pulling out the best scheme anyone ever pulled vs VY in his 3 years at UT. It was funny to me how few teams tried to copy that, and thought dedicating 1 guy (who Vince would usually make look silly) as a spy was the superior strategy.

Greg Robinson rarely gets enough credit for his defense that day because AD's rushing yardage was so impressive - even though that yardage was the vast majority of OU's offense. The returning Heisman winner could hardly move the ball through the air and coughed up 3 turnovers. I think Greg figured that if we shut down Jason White, the freshman RB wouldn't be able to beat us by himself, and if our offense had played even mediocre, he would have been right. I remember one of the rare times VY threw an accurate pass that game, Nate Jones let it bounce right off both hands in the end zone. I also think we lost chances at 3 or 4 FGs throughout the game from sacks or 15-yard penalties on 3rd down. So frustrating.

I remember this clearly as well. If he had caught it, it might have turned the game around. Same thing (but with lower stakes and less skilled players) with Baylor in 2013. Case was horrendous, but the one time he threw a decent pass that could have sparked something, the receiver dropped the ball. Others that come to mind are BJ Johnson dropping a few critical passes in a few games, Malcolm Williams had one I cannot quite remember, and I'll never forget John Chiles (assuming he would have caught, which I admit is a generous assumption) had a sure TD against Bama but stopped running for no reason.

I remember the Chiles one mostly because an inebriated fan in the Rose Bowl took great umbrage when I said "Chiles! Why did you stop running?" The fan went on to inform me for 10 minutes about how Chiles was the best player on the entire 2009 team. We did not see eye to eye. In fact, I am convinced the fan had never watched a Texas football game or had ever seen John Chiles play before to make such a statement.

I think it was Malcolm Williams who let a pass bounce of his hands in the endzone against Alabama in 2009 as well, although it might have been Buckner or Kirkendoll too - hard to remember who it was since everyone at WR not named Jordan Shipley completely mailed in it that evening. Between that game and the 2010 season we had about a dozen dropped TD passes and another dozen bounce off receivers for picks.

I had forgotten about that one. I think it was still only like 10-3 at that point too - and a possession or two later Case scrambled for about 37 seconds on 4th down before throwing a no-look pass to Malcolm Brown in the endzone (given all the other misfires that game, how he pulled that one out, I'll never know), so we still could have somehow made a game of it despite everything.

Including one from Major in the Colorado game, if I recall correctly (which I may not).

And now, to make things less unpleasant than this discussion, I'll go slam my nutsack into the wall.

    Stat,

2004 was very little Greg Robinson and almost totally Dick Twomey. It was Twomey roaming the sidelines. If Mack Brown had brought Twomey back, he might still be the head coach. I posted back then, MB should offer Twomey $1+ million for one year. Twomey doesn;t get nearly enough credit for changing the attitude and mental toughness of the 2004 & 2005 teams. Yes, Twomey was gone in 05, but his attitude was still lingering. Who could ever forget Studdard and David Thomas sending the message to OU & Colorado (in Reliant) after cheap shots on VY. A little more of the Twomey toughness and Mack Brown would have been a lot more successful.

I think Gene Chizik did okay. It was more the Muschamp Head Coach In Waiting where problems started.
