Down Mexico Way... again.

StevieP is back at it - trying to get us a game in Mexico. Guess he has Tex Schramm envy.

    Per BON:
"If we don't leverage it, someone else will," Patterson said. "We shouldn't give up that natural advantage we have."

However, Texas still hasn't found an opponent and is experiencing some logistic issues in scheduling the game.

Teams from California or Arizona would seem like the most likely candidates. With the Horns playing the Trojans in 2017 and 2018, could the two schools add a neutral-site game in Mexico City for 2019?

The continued pursuit of a game in Mexico City provides further evidence that Patterson is completely serious about expanding the school's international brand.
"If we don't leverage it, someone else will." What in the wide, wide world of sports is he talking about???

The continued pursuit of a game in Mexico City provides further evidence that Patterson is el loco. (fify)

To me these branding trial balloons mostly seem to do with:

    1. His Pro DNA
    2. Raising money

I suppose it could be a healthy dose of both, but it may be more about raising money as there are very likely money raising requirements / bonuses in his contract to do so. I don't think expanding our brand internationally is a real high priority to most of us and it is not important to our casual fan base at all, but it is to him. I think taking actions that help Men's & Women's teams WIN GAMES should be the primary focus.

There are millions of football fans in Mexico... hardcore fans. There are thousands of Steeler fans because the organization has always pushed PR there and no other teams really had... Stevie knows that its a market ready to blow up... he just wants to be the first one there and earn those devoted lifelong fans.

And another road trip I can't afford to make ...

Thanks, Patterson. You're wooing international fans at the expense of those who have supported your teams through thick and thin.

Is this just an attempt to sell t-shirts in Mexico or does SP think there's an untapped market for college football south of the border? And if there is an untapped market, what does that do for UT? I guess I don't see the big picture since I don't understand the need to play football anywhere but DKR and road trips within the US. I understand the desire of the NFL to spread its brand internationally but that's a totally different business model than college football. If student recruitment is the issue, there are plenty of deserving high school students within the State of Texas that don't currently get in to UT. We don't need to go shopping in another country for students at the expense of Texas kids.

This makes sense to me. There are a lot of potential customers of UT-branded merchandise in Mexico, and being a border country to Texas it is the logical place to make a move like this.

Whether the fans like it or not is ultimately immaterial to the University. It’s obvious that Patterson has been given a mandate to generate revenue so that’s a primary focus. And he knows very well that winning is key to that goal as well.

Don't forget El Pistolas! He's still popular down Mexico way. Did anyone see the interview with Mexican TV and Colt after he ripped the Cowboys heart out? He'd sell the game on personal appearance alone. Other than that, kiss steve patterson!

Therein rests the real source of contention and friction...none of THOSE teams were HIS teams. Instead, it seems that in his eyes, you, the loyal fan, is at fault somehow for not demanding an AD to squeeze even more money out of fans/donor in those thin years. He is no different than the idiots at $tarbux that wonder why they haven't put a location on the fourth corner of the intersection despite already having three in place on the other corners...

Let's put our thinking caps on to find the good in this quest.

    1. 1 dollar = 15.20 pesos means inexpensive cerveza
    2. Access to authentic Mexican food
    3. Recruiting advantage across Mexico
    4. Mexico City averages temperatures in the low 70's during September
    5. Chance to learn how to say OU Sux in Spanish

I'm going to be pissed if they move a top game from Austin to Mexico. Not going to Mexico for a game.

Hell, let's all move there. Should be plenty of vacant, inexpensive property right about now.

A lot of Mexixan nationals have second homes in Texas, particularly The Woodlands. Get to know one, and you may have somewhere to stay for the game.

One more anecdote, I met someone from Mexico on the way to the game who was in Austin for a conference. Bought a ticket to attend the game.

China has billions of fans just itching for an American College football team to follow. We should only play away games. Those fans on campus are already locked up and would fill up DKR to watch in on the big screen. More ads = more money!

Wait, what about India? Over a billion people and like China fans just itching for an American Football team to follow. More potential money to feed Patterson's financial juggernaut.

Hey the Texas Longhorns could be the world's college football team!

I see new UT branches starting up as a result of Patterson's efforts: UT-MC, UT-Cabo, UT-Cozumel/Cancun (Spring Break year round, ultimate party school), UT-Acapulco (new diving team hq), UT-Zihua (new oceanography school) etc. Hmm, wonder if the tuition will be affordable.

His solution really is simple. Merely find that other team that supposedly will eventually leverage it and play them.

There are over 25 million people in Mexico City and 24.8 million of them couldn't afford a t-shirt, much less the price of a ticket. If Patterson wants to "expand the brand" and capture Mexico, how about getting his butt to the 800 building in Bentonville and agree to a few road games in Fayetteville and Columbia in exchange for WalMart allowing Texas merchandise to dominate their stores in Mexico.

As for the Steeler reference, I've made many business trips down there, and rarely see Steeler stuff, but Cowboys gear is everywhere. Must say that Houston's presence is growing, but nowhere near the Cowboys dominance.

How about Sao Paulo? 28 million people with no college football affiliation.

If you can't afford the game in Mexico City do not even think about going to the Bay area for the Cal game that will be more expensive without a doubt!!!

    Major,

I totally disagree. While hotels and food in SFO will be more expensive, if you factor in the ransom for the kidnappings in Mexico City, SFO is a lot cheaper.

FWIW, Mexico City and Guadalajara average more than one US citizen kidnapped a week and have for a few years.
