Was independence a mistake?

I think this is a fascinating topic for discussion as well as how the world would look had American independence not occurred, but as to be expected from Vox, the reasons cited in this article center mostly around the evil, racist white man in America.

We would probably all have bad teeth, silly accents, stand in queues (and actually use the word queue), watch cricket (how does that **** even work?), drink tea, and suffer the utter absurdity of The Royal Family. No thanks.

Uh NO, even though I'm afraid all we have done in 239 years is trade King George III for King Washington DC.

There might not be an EU today as most of the continent might have suffered the fate of Eastern Poland and the USSR might still exist. The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere might have been established (and the rape of china continued for decades), although I doubt that would have lasted as a political entity until the present day, the government of Imperial Japan was too corrupt, inefficient, and incompetent to have survived that long.

Wow, that article gave me flashbacks to my Intro to American History class at UT which should have been more accurately titled "Why you should hate America and especially white male Americans 301". I suppose that we should believe that the colonies refused to accept a modest tax on tea and stamps but would have accepted an English decree to abolish slavery?

Now that the Left has succeeded in taking the "Christ" of out Christmas, I guess they're going after the 4th of July. It figures, they hate America, so of course they'd hate it's birthday.

Christ out of Christmas...oh god here we go. Christians have done more damage to the image of Christ than any tree-hugger could possibly do. There's a few reasons fewer and fewer Americans identify as Christian/or religious and it has nothing to do with liberals.

In my opinion, it has to do with who speaks for the Republican Christians in America. The people who speak for this group come across as angry, bitter, and full of hate. I think the people themselves are nothing like that for the most part - you just have a really ****** PR system in place.

Stop watching so much TV. That is not the Christian religion most Americans know. Nobody appointed Benny Hinn or Pat Robertson as "speaker." That is done by the media.

I don't know who Benny Hinn is. I'm talking about Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee.

Neither speak for all Christians either, but please give some "full of hate" examples.

I take back 'full of hate'. They are angry.. they are bitter. But hey, hang your hat on the Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabees of the world in general elections next year and beyond. More power to you.

I am not supporting any candidate at this time. But let's keep playing. Any examples of anger or bitterness of is this just what MSNBC told you to think today?

I guess you win - but to be fair, I didn't know we were playing anything. (And I don't watch cable news of any kind). So i'll drop bitter, i'll drop angry -if it means you'll let me play on your lawn. I'll just leave a quote from the Trump thread from our buddy Deez and leave you pondering who he might be talking about ....

I put no stock in what a politician says anyway and basically assume that whatever inflammatory smack talk a Republican spouts is usually said to rally pissed off, old white guys. -- Mr Deez

Playing is a play on words, but you know that. I think nearly everyone on this board respect most if not all what Deez posts. However, that particular quote could be easily reversed to say democrat versus republican and whatever negative rhetoric the RNC touts.

Given your description of Huckabee and Cruz, I doubt very seriously you never get any information from the national media. A standard counter argument of liberals I hear on MSNBC, Progress on XM and other liberal sources is to throw out "must be bitter old white man" or "must be racist" when they have no answer. I have never been called a pissed off old white man, but if the shoe fits for you, I will wear it.

Final Thought -- I’ll take your word for it and I’m glad you’re not a pissed off old white guy . . The only thing that can be quantified in this discussion is if either of those 2 men have a chance of being elected POTUS. Time will tell. I bet whether they are angry or bitter won’t matter in the end.

Here's why the Revolution was a good idea:

    Chicken Fried Steak
    2006 Rose Bowl
The General F'in Lee and Daisy Dukes (that's right folks)
    Houston...the Eagle has landed.
    Lonesome Dove
    Alexander Hamilton
George Gershwin's An American In Paris
AJ Foyt winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford GT and starting champagne celebrations
Ironically, The Beattles and The Rolling Stones
Capitalism/Social Mobility/Liberty (unless you like your social classes served via birthright)

What has England gave us since 1776?
A Middle East cluster exacerbated by the legacy of colonial Imperialism.
Two centuries of imperial wars even more useless than the wars America fought in.
    Classism/Xenophobia/soccer hooligans

I would say James Bond, but the Fleming character is actually half Scottish/Swiss. So you don't even win that one England.

My belief is that Huckabee has zero chance and Cruz has only a remote chance. And by remote, I mean very remote.

Obviously the USA has had their fair share and more of dumbassitude and utter screw-ups in the Middle East, but the UK sure does seem to get off scot free for a lot longer history than us of making everything worse in that region that they possibly could.

I just read this Rick Perry quote this morning and it reminded me of this thread.

"My fellow Republicans, beware of false prophets. Do not let itching ears be tickled by messengers who appeal to anger, division and resentment," the former Texas governor said.

He was talking specifically about Trump, but Jeb Bush has also made similar comments about the Republican field in general. I guess they watched MSNBC before the speeches so they'd know what to say.
