If I recall correctly, there was rumor that after verbally committing, Du'Vonta Lampkin was going to be a signing day flip to from UT to OU. However, UT learned of that plan when Jay Norvell was let go as OC at OU and came to UT as WR coach. The rumor was that new hire Norvell tipped off Charlie Strong and the UT coaching staff to Lampkin's and OU's plan. A week or two later Lampkin was due to visit UT and the assumption was that Strong and UT questioned Lampkin about the now revealed, secret flip plan. Evidently Lampkin was unable or unwilling to admit his desire to play for OU, and pledged continued allegiance to Strong and UT.
After signing a UT LOI, Lampkin next reported that he could not pass a language requirement to enter UT. His HS coach said it was his fear of failing the course that led to the announcement. Conspiracy theorists claimed that from the beginning, Lampkin had hoped that after announcing that he was failing to qualify for UT, he would be released from his LOI by UT, and subsequently be able to flip back to OU before summer's end.
If this is anywhere close to what took place, Lampkin could have avoided all of the trouble simply by publicly decommitting from UT at some point prior to signing his LOI and then committing to OU. But it seems like that was too difficult a task for the young man to do, to publicly make a statement which would disappoint Charlie Strong, Longhorn DL coach Chris Rumph, and the Longhorn fan base. That kind of action would later prove not to be so difficult for Rumph, who flipped employment from UT to U of Florida, apparently without notice, immediately after signing day, to the reported disappointment Strong, the UT fan base, and Lampkin.
