So basically, it's up to admissions to make sure his appeal to NOT get into the University of Texas flows through.

I feel sorry for the kids with 3.8's and 400+ hours of community service who didn't get in because they're from districts like Eanes, Highland Park, or Plano. Here's a kid who's begging to be kicked out of Texas.

I know someone will pick him up because he's a big time talent, but really? Even Stoops has to be shaking his head on this kid.

He and his family handled this all wrong. Then wanted UT and others to basically let him slide on by. Let him rot maybe it will be a good lesson. I also believe the NCAA understands the Pandora's box this could become.

If I recall correctly, there was rumor that after verbally committing, Du'Vonta Lampkin was going to be a signing day flip to from UT to OU. However, UT learned of that plan when Jay Norvell was let go as OC at OU and came to UT as WR coach. The rumor was that new hire Norvell tipped off Charlie Strong and the UT coaching staff to Lampkin's and OU's plan. A week or two later Lampkin was due to visit UT and the assumption was that Strong and UT questioned Lampkin about the now revealed, secret flip plan. Evidently Lampkin was unable or unwilling to admit his desire to play for OU, and pledged continued allegiance to Strong and UT.

After signing a UT LOI, Lampkin next reported that he could not pass a language requirement to enter UT. His HS coach said it was his fear of failing the course that led to the announcement. Conspiracy theorists claimed that from the beginning, Lampkin had hoped that after announcing that he was failing to qualify for UT, he would be released from his LOI by UT, and subsequently be able to flip back to OU before summer's end.

If this is anywhere close to what took place, Lampkin could have avoided all of the trouble simply by publicly decommitting from UT at some point prior to signing his LOI and then committing to OU. But it seems like that was too difficult a task for the young man to do, to publicly make a statement which would disappoint Charlie Strong, Longhorn DL coach Chris Rumph, and the Longhorn fan base. That kind of action would later prove not to be so difficult for Rumph, who flipped employment from UT to U of Florida, apparently without notice, immediately after signing day, to the reported disappointment Strong, the UT fan base, and Lampkin.

Yep...seems all so simple, but look at the predicament he's got himself into instead. He may have been able to make the rotation this year at UT had he and or his family monitored the minimum admission requirements starting when he was a junior and got him through Spanish. But, my thought he believes he's so much in demand that some university would waive requirements, give him a scholly, and let him come in and play. As it is, he'll probably go to JUCO, but it would not surprise me if OU picks him up. Isn't that what they did with DGB after he was kicked out at Mizzou? Not exactly the same facts but indicates a pattern of sorts.

I think the difference is that DGB was quite possibly the best HS player in the country and if you had a 1 percent chance of him ever stepping on the field, it's a 1 percent chance of your WR position being shored up good. I think Stoops knew the character risk and that DGB would probably never play, but hell, just get him on your practice squad for a year and try to keep him on the straight-and-narrow until Draft season.

Lampkin is a "2nd echelon" kind of DT. Not elite but could probably start for many D1 teams. To take a risk on him is a lot different because potentially, he's not going to add a whole lot if your roster already has a little depth. JUCO would do him wonders.

First - everything seems to indicate that Lampkin is academically eligible. UT has a certain requirement that an incoming freshman have completed four semesters of high school foreign language. Lampkin has completed the first two, but has been informed that he cannot complete the next two prior to the start of the academic year. The relevant fact here is UT IS NOT GOING TO ADMIT HIM.

Is it anyone's position that the kid should have to sit out because UT won't let him in even though he is eligible according to the NCAA? Every school sign kids that have to shore up their academics to start, but UT isn't going to let him in - what is board's opinion on how this should be treated? It seems irrelavant that he may or may not have had second thoughts prior to LOI signing, he signed LOI. Does UT have an obligation to let him since they let him sign the LOI and he NCAA approved for academics?

    From an OU site:
I spoke with a source yesterday who is close to 2015 Texas DT signee, Du’Vonta Lampkin. Here are the notes I received from my source regarding where things currently stand:

    * Lampkin put in a request from the NCAA to be immediately released from his NLI.
    * Texas was required to respond by business close on Friday July 17th, which they did.
    * Earlier this week, the NCAA denied Lampkin’s request to be immediately released.
    * Lampkin will now have to wait till the end of the summer (i.e. after fall camp) in order to receive a mandatory release due to his inability to qualify for entry to the University of Texas.

Obviously, it would have been a great thing had Lampkin been immediately released, because he would have been permitted to participate in fall camp at whatever school he eventually chose to attend. But in reality, the NCAA’s denial is only delaying the inevitable. As Lampkin will not qualify at Texas and will receive an automatic release at the end of the summer.

We still expect Oklahoma to be a primary player for Lampkin.

The academics at Junior College X will be significantly greater than what he would encounter at OU so he may want to give this some thought, in English.

Anyone know how to get in touch with this kid? Maybe you should send him Willis Mackey's contact information. While the situation is not exactly the same, Willis did enroll at Texas in the morning and OU in the afternoon. His ranch is not far from Austin, maybe he will give the kid a place to stay while he counsels him on the benefits of SWT over Washington, Texas and OU. :yippee:

In fairness, Willis did shock the hell out of me with his academic career.

I didn't know a whole lot about this until recently. I think when his DL coach left right after NSD he was blindsided. I think that really upset the apple cart with the kid.

I heard Stoops talking about it earlier in the week. He said that while he's never held a NLI like this that he wouldn't commit that he wouldn't do it in the future. He said each situation is unique and he's not in a position to tell Charlie Strong what to do. He spoke well of Charlie.

Stoops might not hold a kid's letter of intent but he'll sure take kids who don't stand by theirs. I think even Sooner fans are recognizing that this wasn't a matter of "well the DL coach left" because we have plenty of DL guys who didn't bolt due to that. This is a kid whose selfish behavior from 2012-2015 led to some pretty stupid academic decisions, he got stuck between a rock and a hard place, and his only option was bailing. I wouldn't want someone like that in my program.

I'm unsure on why you'd want someone who had displayed such selfish behavior from 2012-2015.

His grade risks were exactly that. Risks. Strong et al took a risk, thinking that the guy could pull it together and not have to take a freshman course 3 times. Instead, he gave up and said "someone else will take me." And nobody is surprised that it's OU.

If I heard it right, this morning Chip reported what sounded like a six-game suspension (but not the reason). He also indicated that the young man declined to take another Spanish class knowing he would result in his not being admitted to UT. Conspiracy? Maybe... either way it seems we see so many times that the shady moves are a revelation of character. Not in every instance but "Holla" comes to mind... there are others. Just be honest. At the same time, I have a nineteen year old son and though he is an honest kid, he is intimidated by adults and has a hard time disappointing them or changing his mind with high-pressure personalities so I have to temper my comments.

Since one does not get a six-game suspension at OU for beating someone with a baseball bat, I'm thinking it might be something fairly serious.
