On August 6, 2015 our men check in for Fall Camp. The next day they take the field.

Several nagging questions will be answered by the time camp ends. But, it's football - so many of those answers will change as the season progresses.
    • Who will take the offensive reins
    • Will Wick whip the OL into serviceable shape
    • What's the prognosis of the DL
    • Is Malik really for real
    • Has the culture changed from entitled to enraged
    • Are the freshmen as bad as we hope
    And many more.

Post and read all the updates here; and let's get ready for some TEXAS LONGHORNS FOOTBALL!

    Injury updates [247Sports]:

Senior cornerback Sheroid Evans (knee) and redshirt freshman cornerback Jermaine Roberts (knee) won't be 100-percent.

Senior tackle Desmond Jackson (foot), junior end Caleb Bluiett (knee), redshirt freshman tackle Chris Nelson (shoulder) and redshirt freshman end Derick Roberson (shoulder) all missed spring but will be in Fall Camp.

Senior linebacker Dalton Santos will be ready to go and will probably not redshirt as rumors have suggested. “He's still rehabbing,” Strong said. “He's not running full speed, but he's back into the swing. Probably by the time camp starts he should be full go.”

Freshman OL Patrick Vahe has done fine with his surgically-repaired shoulder. “We haven't had any problems with it,” Strong said. “We've had to monitor his lifting some. Other than that he's in the middle of it.”

Bluiett's recovery from an ACL injury he suffered against TCU has gone extremely well and the same can be said for sophomore wide receiver Roderick Bernard. Having missed the remainder of the season after blowing out his knee against Kansas State, Bernard is doing great and making excellent progress according to Strong.

Update: "Nothing ever official from the school, but I've been told by multiple people Evans and Jermaine Roberts won't play this year." - Jeff Howe 247Sports

The OL will be better than just "serviceable"
Malik is for real and basically proved it in the spring, but he will put an exclamation point on REAL in fall camp
I believe we will see the culture will have changed from entitled to hostile, I am not sure about "enraged"...
I believe we will be pleased overall with this incoming class of freshmen - it will be filled with bad asses
Incoming LB Cecil Cherry is going to surprise in fall camp

    Texas Safeties

Texas’ great hope in 2015 on defense is that its secondary will have a strong year thanks to the accumulation of great athletes in the 2015 class combined with the returning experience inside at safety in Jason Hall and Dylan Haines will create a combination in the secondary that results in good defense.

A year after Texas suffered from poor safety play and had few obvious candidates on the roster to fill a very important position in Charlie’s defense, both Haines and Hall emerged rather unexpectedly to play big roles.

Dylan Haines was the free safety in the nickel package, which snagged a big chunk of the Texas’ defensive snaps, and put up the following stat line: 86 tackles, four interceptions, seven pass break-ups, and a forced fumble.

Although he finished third on the team in tackles (behind linebackers Hicks and Edmond), Haines’ identity as a player isn’t that of a physical enforcer but as a cover safety and eraser on the back end.

His successful defense of 11 total passes testifies to his ability to run with receivers in the middle of the field, cover the seam routes as a middle of the field safety, and reliably make tackles from the back end. Haines lacks the range to be an impact player supporting the run from centerfield and he’s more a guy that will punish mistakes or jump tendencies due to film study than a guy that will make amazing plays on the ball.

Play good coverage underneath, and pressure the QB and Haines will clean things up with break-ups and interceptions. Ask him to be a big part of the run defense filling the alley or forcing runs, and he’ll be in position but he won’t shine.

Jason Hall was an underrated true freshman recruit with explosive downhill range and physicality that made him the clear option at boundary safety before Texas had even finished out the pre-conference slate. He put up the following stat line: 49 tackles, one tackle for loss (a sack), and two pass break-ups.

He started the year stronger than he finished it due to an injury. Early in the year he had his famous suplex against Samaje Perine in the Red River Shootout, but after the injury, Texas was lining up Haines closer to the ball. They were protecting Hall from regular action by giving him assignments out on the slot receiver or in the deep middle.

This allowed Hall to finish the year, but now it begs the question of what could be possible in 2015 if he can stay healthy and play closer to the ball as a box safety.

[*Explanations of the five main coverages UT used in 2014 with diagrams*]

Behind [Haines and Hall] the roster is chock full of players that have the potential to fill either role or fit into the overall Strong system. Davante Davis very well may stick at corner, but the 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame of “the silencer” could also grow into either safety position where his coverage ability and size could make him a dynamic player.

Kirk Johnson probably starts at running back, but he’s a big kid and a phenomenal athlete who could end up at any one of several positions before all is said and done, including DB. Kris Boyd will start at corner but the same is true for him. PJ Locke is probably a coverage safety or a nickel that is a willing tackler but not someone Texas would feature at either position.

Finally there’s DeShon Elliott, who could probably play as a box safety but might be best utilized as a free safety due to his range and erasing abilities. Elliott has the striking ability and coverage range that would make Haines a standout star rather than a very strong role player. Let’s all hope those two spend quality time together on the practice field and in the film room so that Elliott can benefit from Haines’ wisdom.

Count me in as one who's not nearly as concerned with the defense as most. Hicks and Brown will be tough to replace, but the talent will be there. Jackson and Ridgeway should do just fine in the middle. And the talent infusion at OLB looks promising.

Reed and Diggs weren't overly impressive in my eyes (or the NFL scouts') last season. I think we'll do fine getting at or near their 2014 production.

Not worried in the least about replacing Thompson or Edmond with equal performance.

It may take a little while to gel, but by the time we hit conference I feel our defense will be right where they left off.

I, on the other hand, am worried about the defense. Don't know if I'm worried any more than most or not, but we lose six starters. Mykelle played well last year, as did Hicks, Brown, etc. Talent can indeed make up for a lot, and we will need the talented newcomers to have a very sharp learning curve. I don't expect it the first two or three games. I will be looking for, and expect to see it by mid season, but still, we are talking about freshmen and sophomores filling big time critical positions, especially in the back seven. Mistakes there can mean a quick six.

After getting fooled a few times defenders learn to recognize patterns and react more quickly to the play. Looking for that.
Getting fooled can also lead to drops in confidence and drop offs in play. Don't want to see that.

I look for the coaches to prevent drops in confidence and to bring the youngsters along successfully. Patience will be necessary for a while. Take many deep breaths and think of waves slowly and rhythmically rolling in at the beach--good for calming oneself while watching freshmen develop.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

This is what we fans will need this season on both sides of the ball.

I am concerned about the D with 6 veterans gone, but less so than I am concerned about the O, especially at the you know what position.... QB.

So much rides on the W's questions for the QB on this team: Who, When, Where, What, Winning and throw in a big HOW.

This is one area where the team truly "buying in" pays huge dividends. Last year with the distractions and resistance by a sizable number of players, this area likely was diminished some. Some may have worked hard, but bad influences and others around who are just getting by does detract from teammates in the workout program.

If Strong and Moorer now have the vast majority of current players on board with submitting their full effort to the S&C program, the 2015 dividends should have a solid impact on Saturdays.

If I recall correctly, the Horns once had a three-star QB who was a coach's son - that one worked out pretty well. Anyone else remember Colt McCoy?

We also remember Case (though his limitations were mostly related to his physical skills, not mental).

Charlie Strong and the rest of the Texas coaching staff are eagerly waiting the start of fall camp. While the staff is excited to get things underway, the fans may want to pay attention to incoming freshman DeAndre McNeal.

Texas also landed prized recruit and teammate linebacker Malik Jefferson. Jefferson deserves all the accolades on the defensive side of the ball but on offense McNeal has been working hard.

McNeal will get a look at the H-back position when fall camp opens up next week. He can create mismatches all over the field for opposing defenses. At 6-foot-2, 240-pounds he is too fast for most linebackers and too big for most safeties.

Rated as an outside linebacker it is not fair to say he is anything but an athlete. McNeal is an excellent wide receiver prospect who was a go-to guy and made key plays for his high school team. He has sneaky speed, good size and the penchant for making amazing plays.
