at making the 53 man final roster in Dallas. He's blocking good enough and catching passes left and right in preseason and camp, wonder why that (pass catching) wasn't taken more advantage of during his stay at the 40 acres?

Uh...maybe because he was a "tight end"?

The radio people (like Norm Nitzges) seem to think they're stringing Swaim along so that they can keep him on the practice squad for TE/ST. He's a hard worker, and you don't want him going to another team when you can make him an easy call-up for the 46-man dress roster in a jiffy. I doubt he supplants someone like Hanna, who has 22 career starts. And they're not giving up on the Escobar experiment until Jason Witten like... dies.

Because we couldn't throw well, block for the QB well, or call plays well.

Norm Hitscus (sp) on the ticket in dallas said this very thing today. Norm said the reason he didn't catch many at Texas is that QB play was not good enough to get the ball to him. Some truth there. And the offense had little geared to include the TE.

Wishing the best for Geoff to make the team.

I'm not a Cowboys fan, but I do like to see former Horns player do well in the league. From what I've seen, he has played very well and was one of the few bright spots against the Niners the other night.

It will be ironic if it turns out that we had a pro caliber TE on our team all along. I seem to recall him as a blocking TE with limited receiving skills. But, maybe it was the people throwing the ball and not him.

Am I the only one that remembers him dropping easy passes against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl?

I mean, that's a game that I understand everyone wanting to forget, but.... anyway here is the box score showing Swaim drops. If you want to feel pain, the game is on youtube.

In a more general sense, while we haven't had great or usually even good qb play for the past 5 years, cases of dropping key passes and having on-target throws bounce off our guys for interceptions have been a big problem too. I remember in that Oregon game when we pulled Case and put in Tyrone, he misfired on several throws, then hit Mike Davis perfectly for about a 40 yard bomb that went right through Mike's hands. Pretty much summed up his career here, sadly.

Fair point Stat. We have not had consistent QB play, but (other than Jaxon Shipley) we have a lot of bad play by receivers at key moments. The weird part about the drops or the receiver caused interceptions is that I really have felt we have had pretty good receivers on the whole over the past 3 years. Jaxon Shipley finished his career at Texas 3rd in all time career receptions ahead of Quan Cosby and behind only Jordan Shipley and Roy Williams. Imagine what Shipley could have done with better QB play and not having different offenses 3 of his 4 years. Mike Davis, despite some bad drops, finished 5th all time in career receptions. Goodwin finished 12th. Marcus Johnson is good and John Harris was good as well. However, yes, the group did have some weird key drops on very catchable passes.

As far as tight ends go, the player I think could have been taken more advantage of was D.J. Grant. Case seemed to find him a lot. As far as Ash, either Grant was not in the game or Ash did not look at him very much when he was. Whether it was the offensive scheme or the QB play, more could have been done with Grant to create a better threat from the TE position.
