The Rangers need to be more worried about the Angels and the Twins (not to mention Baltimore and Tampa Bay) than the Astros.

Nice job by Hamels tonight - and a good job by the offense, putting up enough runs to cement the W. And the Angels cooperated by losing to the Indians, dropping the Halos 1.5 behind the Rangers. Need to win at least one more against the Orioles - and a sweep would be even nicer!

    ... and the Astros lost.

After dropping two to the Jays including that gut punch loss Tuesday, the Rangers have won two straight and are back in half game lead over the surging Twins. Ironically the Rangers are 4 back of Yankees and 4 back of Astros for either first wild card or division win so its not just a race with twinkies. Have four strong starters now in Hamels, Holland, Lewis and Gallardo who is 3-0 in his last 3 starts and seems to be finding his strong early season form. At the five spot the Rangers need Perez to come up with some quality starts and get him some run support.

    Magic number is 35.

Interesting question for next season/off-season - with Yu coming back (hopefully, but reports say his recovery and throwing program are both going well), do the Rangers try to sign Gallardo as a free agent? If so, that would make a very nice rotation, with Tepesch, Martinez, and several other pitchers in the minors to develop. But the budget may be a problem.

I see Holland, Gallardo, Tepesch, Martinez in the same position. The Rangers don't need all 4 now so we will see where they are at the end of the season. I would say Gallardo, Tepesch are the weakest ones, but economics as always will the the final decision maker.

Made it out to Globe Life last night and I must be Perez's good luck charm because I have now been in stands for both of his wins this season. Rangers got win number 67 which matches all of last seasons total with 34 games left to play. Fielder is still in a bit of a slump and he needs to get going again. Josh is back Monday but its feast or famine with him so who knows. Beltre is timeless and his bomb last night was awesome. I will also say that if April and early May are not part of the equation, Choo might be playing best of anyone on team not named Beltre or Deshields. Magic number is 33.

I think the Rangers let Gallardo go and re-sign Lewis. They just have too many pitchers in starting roles and as said above the economics say Gallardo moves on unless he gives a huge home town discount. If he does move on then Gonzalez, Tepesch and Martinez will be long relievers and spot starters and barring injuries the Rangers rotation will be Darvish, Hamels, Holland, Lewis and Perez. That is two aces and three very solid other starters and by far best overall rotation in AL West. I think the Rangers look to move Choo for money reasons but if he continues to play as well as he has since June maybe they decide to hold on to him.

Holland gets complete game 3 hit shutout as Rangers win 6-0 to sweep the Orioles and go 4-2 over the six game home stand after starting 0-2. Game and a half up on the Twins (2 in loss column) for second wild card but more importantly they climb to within three of the Astros and just 2 back in the loss column. 10 game road trip comes now to San Diego, Angels and Seattle.

Magic number is 32 for the wild card but the AL West is really the goal now.

Holland was definitely on today, and the offense clicked well enough. The sweep of Baltimore really helps. And it's nice to be only two back in the loss column to the Astros. First things first - the big ten-game road trip to the West Coast. The Rangers need to win at least seven of the ten to keep the momentum going. San Diego is 5-5 in their last ten and won't be a pushover. The Angels have imploded, but they are still capable of scoring runs in bunches. And The Mariners are always a problem, especially with King Felix on the mound.

Tied 4-4, Da Rangers work the bases loaded with two outs in the 7th with Andrus providing the 3 RBI basehit!(advances to 3rd on the error) Andrus' BA has been creeping up lately. Good to see him coming around and with the big basehit tonight on the road.

Now they need to finish up strong up 7-4.

Rangers split first two games in San Diego winning last night 8-6. Up one game on Twins and 3 back of Stros though still just 2 in the loss column. Magic number is 31.:texasflag:

Rangers win in extra innings over Padres to take series 2-1 and with Astros losing they move to within two games of Houston and just one back in loss column. Twins remain hot too though so wild card lead is still just one. Day off today before start three game set with Angels tomorrow in Anaheim.

Rangers had an off day Thursday but Twins did them a favor by losing so wild card lead is now game and a half and two in loss column.

Rangers have a chance to basically bury the Angels this weekend while Minn. can help by winning at the the series with the Astros.

Rangers lose opener in Anaheim 5-2. Astros beat Twins which is both good news and bad as Rangers fall three games behind Houston but stay game and a half up on Minnesota for second wild card.

With the number of games left with the Astros I guess keeping Minnesota at bay is best right now. However the Rangers cannot lose contact with Houston.

Exactly, ViperHorn. It would be very nice for (a) the Rangers to win the two remaining in Anaheim against the Angels and (b) Houston and Minnehaha to beat up on each other and split the remaining games. You're absolutely correct - the Rangers need to be within striking distance of the Astros so they can take the lead by winning most of the remaining games with Houston. Beating Houston when the opportunity is available is the key to overtaking them for the AL West title.

Holland with another outstanding start tonight going 8 innings and giving up just 1 run as Rangers win 2-1 to even series with Angels. Twins beat Houston so Rangers stay 1 and 1/2 up in wild card but pull back to within two of the Astros. Huge game tomorrow afternoon as Rangers have chance to take series and make up ground on ether W/C or Houston.

Holland is in the groove - very nice outing to get a much-needed W in Anaheim. Really need to win Sunday to win the series before moving on to Seattle. 3 out of the 4 in Seattle should be the minimum objective - and that should keep the Rangers right on the heels of the Astros.

Another rough outing for Colby Lewis who has now lost 3 straight starts and lost them all badly as Rangers drop the rubber game to the Angels 7-0. Astros beat Twins though so still game and half up in wild card but the Rangers fall back to 3 down in west (2 in loss column). On to 4 game set in Seattle to finish this 10 game road trip while Twins go to KC and Houston goes to Oakland.

Magic number is now 26. :texasflag:

Looks pretty critical to win at least three of the four in Seattle. Astros begin a ten-game road trip, with three in Oakland, three in Anaheim, and four in Arlington. It would really help if Oakland and the Angels could win a couple at home against the Astros - but the critical item is for the Rangers to take care of business in Seattle first.

Rangers take opener in Seattle 3-0 on another solid outing from Gallardo who cant seem to pitch past the sixth in any of his starts but who keeps giving 5-6 solid innings and getting wins. Astros lose wild one in Oakland 10-9 so Rangers pull back to within 2 games of AL West lead and just 1 back in loss column. Twins win in KC so wild card stays at game and half.

Indeed a nice performance for the Rangers - solid pitching and defense and just enough offense. Really need to take at least three of the four in Seattle. And more help from Oakland would be good. Also would help if KC would take care of Minnehaha.

The Rangers are closing in on the point where they need to start thinking about giving the SP's (especially Lewis) some rest in preparation for a playoff run.

Viper I don't think there is any margin for resting the starers right now. Colby is struggling of late and might benefit tremendously from a rest day but the Rangers cant afford to give a spot start to someone who is an all but guaranteed loss and right now all the spot starters fall into that category. If the Rangers can put some distance on the Twins and depending on where they stand with the Astros they may switch up the rotation to give a guy like Lewis a rest or shuffle for a playoff rotation with either Hamels or Holland to lead off but right now they have no margin for error and no margin for messing with the starters normal rotation.
