That's a pretty ballsy title to the movie. I haven't seen it of course, so I am not going to jump to conclusions on how they present the events. But I do wonder if the movie will portray Rather and Mapes as the victims/heroes? Playing Rather is quite the step down from playing Bob Woodward for Redford.

For those that need a wiki refresher. Seriously...proportional fonts. You would think a guy who supposedly has spent his entire career at a typewriter would have noticed. Both Rather and Mapes still hold to the lie that the documents are authentic.

I haven't seen it, but I can almost guarantee that it's going to present Rather and Mapes positively. People who try to make George W. Bush look bad going into an election don't get bad treatment from Hollywood. They'll portray Rather and Mapes as conscientious journalists and CBS as gutless corporate hacks wimping out under right seeing pressure and refusing to stand by their reporters.

is there anybody who thinks W did not get some assistance in getting into the air national guard? Anybody think he wanted to go to Viet Nam and fight in a real war himself? People were doing all kinds of things to avoid Nam and I know I was delighted when they told me at my induction physical that I was not fit for military service. Why couldn't he have done like his vice president and just said he had other priorities and opted for the guard instead of risking getting shot at like all the rest of his generation?

As for Rather being a step down from Woodward, now that the dust has cleared and we know how Watergate actually unfolded, Woodward does not look so good. He was being fed information collected by the FBI by the number 2 guy at the bureau who was angry because he got passed over by Nixon for the top spot after Hoover's death.

The expert sleuthing bs propagated by Woodward and Bernstein is just that and given what happened, they lied about how they got the story. The fact is that they assisted a disgruntled agent in staging a palace coup, knowing that the grand jury testimony was being given to them illegally.

Rather got duped and went out on a limb trying to get a big gotcha on W. Shame on him. But he had good reasons to believe the story was true. I don't see how they get a movie out of that but considering the lack of reality of most history movies I can't say it might not be entertaining. I can say I wont pay to see it.

Really??? Rather doesn't think he was duped at all.

Sounds like you might be just the person they're banking on seeing this.

Rather is too arrogant to see himself as being duped would be my guess. He was a haughty newsreader and there are enough bad movies around that if I wanted to see one I have my pick. This is not one of them. If they are banking on me as a viewer they will lose money.

I do think it interesting that after being previewed at film festivals the reviewers see it as a one of the stronger candidates for awards next year. My take on Redford is that he does safe, well made films.

Just watching the trailer, Redford's imitation of Rather's voice is quite good.

There was lots of good discussion here of this abortion of a journalistic endeavor by Rather when it was discovered to be forgery and him running with it anyway. What an embarrassment to him and for the University he went to back in the day. Did they not teach standards for journalism?

I realize your question is rhetorical but UT had what was arguably the best journalism department in the country back when he was there. And all journalism departments taught ethical standards to the students.

I am surprised some people are not blaming Rather's crash and burn for the current disastrously bad state of television journalism. In retrospect, his 60 Minutes segments were pretty good compared to the outright fabrications you see nightly on MSNBC and Fox.

And how did he get a job to begin with? He shows no cleavage and is not a blonde.

My point is he threw it all away, all standards, all decorum, all thoughts on how it would show on his University, to let his ego try and take down W. It was unseemly then and this **** show is as bad or worse if it doesn't call the forgeries, etc, for what they were.

Or bring out the actual proof instead of he said, she said, everyone was doing it.

Hollywood has become so predictable. Their agenda is so transparent. It's funny how liberals constantly whine about Fox News but overlook (and even celebrate) agenda driven journalism at more liberal media outlets.
