    True, true. Said well.

I'm wondering how jovial and down home country Vance is going to be this week. He hasn't looked stone cold shocked or angry since he got here. But did you see the LHN after-game interview with Charlie... see his head down... Good thing. The few times he raised his eyes where you could see them... man, if I were an assistant I would not want to meet that gaze.

His best move if he has one left is fire the entire staff and hire what it takes. Royal always had outstanding assistant coaches. And, for the most part, so did Mack Brown.

To think...this coaching change sent Duane Akina off to another job.

    And it shows.

    How old is Vance? 57?

At that age you are what you are. And if you start of as the good cop, you handicap yourself from the get go. Much easier to ease up when your players have responded than to get angry when they need coaching.

Something hit me; it seems offenses in the Big 12 can score at will. Easily. They have a scheme that makes scoring in football as easy as it is for NBA teams. Yet we struggle so much; we have no CLEAR guru or scheme to fool the defense. I don't believe the person that can make it happen is on the staff. This may not be a revelation but it shows the gap between us and the other teams. I'm not sure top five recruiting classes would help if you don't know how to put it together. Maybe a great offensive line would help.

"I hate football when my team is really bad."

This. Make no mistake, this TX team is really bad. They are the worst coached Texas team I have ever witnessed in my 40+years of watching TX football. I agree that CS has lost this team (see the RT by Boyd) etc. I hate to cut and run after 2 years, but these players are out of position all the time. Its just awful to watch. After watching a pedestrian FL team kick the crap out of Ole Miss (yes that same Ole Miss that whipped Bama in Tuscaloosa) in Jim McElwain's first year, you have to point to CS and his inept staff and show them to door. Damn, I really wanted CS to be a great hire as I like the guy.

Absolutely. And then Strong came in and thought we'll play ball control. We'll beat them with defense. And then we'll keep the ball out of their hands.

But the way these offenses work; they can score in just one play on any given play and the odds are in their favor that they will do just that at some point even if you play your best defense. They don't care about ToP. They care about the scoreboard and they put a ton of pressure on opposing offenses to keep up a frenetic pace of scoring. If your offense is not used to scoring every time they touch the ball, and most aren't, they just run out of juice.

Also, you can't even score a field goal, it really doesn't help.

In his first years Mack was coaching someone else recruits just like Strong.

And Mack was able to get them, a team that went 4-7, to perform. Strong took over an 8-5 team...and well you can see his record.

In Mack's first year Ricky Williams rushed for over 2,000 yards.

^ and charlie strong would have kicked him off the team for smoking weed before the 98 season. Also Ricky Williams rushed 1,893 yards in 1997, the second most yards in Texas football history. Despite Ricky Williams rushing for so many yards, the team went 4-7. It seems Mack Brown was able to take the same players and win more with them. Harbaugh is winning right now with someone else's players. Elite coaches can win with someone else's players. Some coaches cannot win even if they have a running back rush for 1800 yards.

^ here is the link to Ricky Williams 1997 season still being the second most yards a Texas running back has ever rushed for in a single season. It did not stop John Mackovic from going 4-7.

It's a strange thing that happened Mackovics last year; he had Ricky's production as you mentioned and James Brown at quarterback who had a bad year compared to previous years. Then Major took over in Mack's first year and had an excellent year (147 rating compared to 100 for Brown the previous year). Was this Greg Davis' doing?

We always comment about players coming to Texas and feeling entitled just because they were give a scholarship by UT.

So, could the same thing be said for this coaching staff? Sitting back fat and happy because they have "arrived" at a big time University. I mean Strong did bring along basically his entire coaching staff, correct? A lot of fat paychecks came along with that. Does anyone feel that any of the coaches are earning their paychecks?

Yes, Texas did lose some "bad" games under Brown, but they always seemed to bounce back the next week. I remember the KSU debacle in Brown's second year and then at the start of the OU game it sure seemed like things were going to get ugly, but they turned it around that game and ended up having a pretty awesome season until Aggy screwed them.

Lastly, Strong lost a lot of credibility with me from the beginning when he made excuses about not having a chance to win anything in his first year. Damn, you are at the University of Texas!!! That alone should give you a chance!

You know, I just don't see that Strong and his staff are complacent. It seems like they are working very hard at this (which is not good when you see the poor results).

But yes, Watson and Bedford never had any business eating at the UT trough. And I do think Strong wanted to reward "his guys" by bringing them along with him. But I won't go so far as to call it cronyism. I will call it really ******* stupid though. He had the opportunity to get the very best, and instead he fooled himself into thinking Watson and Bedford were it, based not on objectivity but out of loyalty / comfort.

Strong had his chance and was not up to the job. Simple as that. I think he is trying his best and I am at the point that it is useless to beat a dead horse. So many mistakes and bad decisions that don't seem to be corrected. He should be gone at the end of this season, as his departure would be best decision for both Texas and Strong.
Pull for our boys on the field and support them as if they were undefeated in all of the remaining games, they need to know we are behind them.
I will be at the Cotton Bowl this Saturday doing exactly that.

This was 247 stuff on recruiting written prior to TCU game --

Recruits and high school coaches alike have told Horns247 on multiple occasions this fall they wish they'd hear more from the Longhorns. Strong insists his staff is being proactive and a perceived lack of contact with recruits and those around them isn't what's hampering Texas' recruiting efforts. “We recruit every day,” Strong said. “That's not the issue.”

What Strong wants to be able to show Texas' remaining priority targets like North Mesquite offensive tackle Jean Delance, Houston Westside defensive tackle Jordan Elliott, Nacogdoches safety Brandon Jones, Waco High cornerback Eric Cuffee, and Alief Elsik linebacker Dontavious Jackson – just a few of the many players Texas is actively pursuing – is simple.

That the program is on an upward trajectory and Texas will be on the rise in short order. That's something, Strong said, that can only happen if the on-field product shows signs of improvement every week. “We've just got to continue to play better because that's what they look at,” Strong said. “They want to be a part of a team that's winning, but also they want to be a part of a team where they know there's light at the end of the tunnel.”

That was said BEFORE he brought them along. Bedford was given a pass as an alum plus Strong is the real DC (which is the basic issue with Strong as HC). Watson should have never been considered, and Strong should have been told so BEFORE he was employed.

There are two, only two, active coaches in college football who have turned multiple programs around in a relatively short period of time, using the last guys players, have each had two teams in the national championship hunt on a regular basis, and have won championships with different quarterbacks and different teams. Those are Meyer and Saban. We're not getting either of those.
The rest are in the same boat as the guy we have: He'll need time to get his system in place, he'll need multiple recruiting classes, and he'll need a dependable, experienced quarterback.
