Patterson's pre-game comment, misinterpreted?

I saw a replay of Patterson's much gasped-at quote of: "We've beaten better with less" and when I saw it I didn't think it was meant as a putdown of Texas, but rather that, frankly, TCU has beaten better teams (than TCU) with less. At first blush it even sounds like a compliment to UT, that he considers UT a "better" team than TCU at this point (in context of the questioner's context of TCU's injury situation).

    From one source:

Prior to the game, TCU head coach Gary Patterson was asked by ESPN sideline reporter Todd McShay what the biggest challenge for his defense is against Texas.

His answer was a bit unkind to the Longhorns offense.

Todd McShay asked Gary Patterson what the biggest challenge for his D is today. Patterson: “We've beaten better with less.”

The less comment is because the Horned Frogs defense is down more than half of its original starters due to injury. But it appears Patterson is rather confident a week after TCU allowed 52 points against Texas Tech.

In further context, taking a look at Rival's recruiting hauls , 2011-2015 (I know it's not an exact science, but the disparity of rankings between Texas and BU/TCU is startling compared to onfield results), Patterson may have a point:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/teamrank/2011/all/all

    2011 - UT #3, BU #46, TCU #26
    2012 - UT #2, BU #45, TCU #37
    2013 - UT #24, BU #31, TCU #30
    2014 - UT #20, BU #35, TCU #50

    2015 (Strong's first class) - UT #12, BU #43, TCU #34
    2016 (in progress) - UT #56, BU #29, TCU #35

I guess I'm suggesting, if Patterson had added one word: "We've beaten better with less before." no one would have noticed. For me, his physical language and verbal tone suggested this is what he meant.

I'm not a Patterson defender so much as I just think this is much about nothing.

In the context of all the missing players he had to deal with, sounds to me like he was just saying he's been in this position before and beaten good teams with short-handed lineups. I didn't see it as a putdown at all.

I see some of you are good generous people. I don't give him benefit of the doubt at all. Pray for me.

He had every right to say it however he wanted to. If he had beaten better teams with less talented teams, and after watching tape felt confident he had the guys to win, well....

Why not just come out and say. My team is better, we're going to kick their *** and there's nothing they can do about it. That's certainly how it went down. TCU has better OLine, QB, receivers, DLine, etc... They are just better across the board. Oh, and they probably have kickers that don't drop punts, shank punts, kick off OOB's, or miss all their field goals.

I have no problem with however he intended it. It's up to Strong and Co. to fix our house. Until then everyone is going to get their kicks in.
