The penalty speaks for itself, it's imposed to prevent coaches from bailing out to another school to avoid it. He bailed to another league to avoid it, the NCAA can't wait to have another crack at him for that. A head coach is responsible for his coaches actions, they still imposed the penalty on him. I thought Kelly, was a hands on, in control kind of coach. Is he this incompetent to not know this was going on at this level, to bring on these sanctions?
I don't know why but I'm actually OK with going 4-8 this season and would like to see how Strong and the team respond next year. This could really turn in to a very talented group of nasty salty young men looking for some payback. I really do like Coach Strong and even though I think the team could have been more successful, I think he's playing the long game and he's got some balls. Get a new OC that's legit and re evaluate Bedford at the end of the season. If he gets one more year of grace on the recruiting trail and lands a good haul I feel like he can get it turned around. Here's to hoping at least.
In my enthusiasm, I completely forgot about Willy Lyles, the slimy pimp who sold Oregon a DVD for thousands, and claimed to be a recruiting consultant. Wasn't that Lache Seastrunk's recruitment? I doubt Texas will ever offer a job to a coach who's been subject to a show cause order.
Yes, it was Seastrunk's recruitment and I recall people on this board being quite upset at the time about this. It seems some circumstances can change people's minds about things they once considered terrible.
"It seems some circumstances can change people's minds about things they once considered terrible." History does show people need to think about who they put in charge when things look bleak.
Very well stated. This is exactly what I feel in my more lucid moments. Otherwise I'm just reactionary and pissed and want him gone. Sigh. I just want to enjoy Texas football kicking *** again. Don't we all.
Oregon is calling Kelly back - let them have him. The NCAA is weak and ineffective, but a show cause penalty is a death sentence to a head coach. Even if he did not know what was going on (he would have been the only one in the country not knowing); he was not truthful to the investigators. Now the minute he takes another college job - he cannot recruit for at least 18 months, and that will probably be extended for at least another 18 months for running out on the original penalty. Strong may get canned; but Kelly isn't coming to Texas.
How are you going to explain to recruits and their families why the Head Coach cannot have any contact with them until they enroll in school?
I'm actually still in on this as well, largely because I already knew this was going to be a garbage year with a winning season being a coin-flip proposition (and how would we all love for that to still be true!!) We knew the product wasn't going to be pretty, we knew Strong would have a sales job to do in the off-season and we knew that players we needed to really turn this thing around are not currently on campus (OL? DL? Kicker?) The question has always been this: can he convince a bunch of 18-year-olds that there's a plan in place, that this is a normal "growing pains" period, and that they need to get on board? I'm not convinced he can do that yet, but I think he has to at least have the chance to try.
Chip Kelly is an absolute control freak. Check out what he's doing at Philly. The personnel changes, etc. I don't believe for a second that he was in total darkness about what went on at Oregon on his watch.
There is a collective "we" on this board that knew this. There's also a collective "we" that believe we could drop our football program for 50 years, reinstitute the program, and win the national championship the next year because WE'RE TEXAS, DAMMIT.
Get the feeling he doesn't want to make that call, but if pressured I guess he will have to. I'm sure he would rather leave that to the next guy.
Sean Payton??? Someone threw that name out there on another board. I would be all about that. Don't know if it's possible, but sounds good.
This was my first thought when I saw Chip Kelly's name mentioned. No thanks. Don't forget the $15+ million buyout of Charlie's contract. Through in the low accuracy of most "expert" predictions and I expect to see Charlie Strong as head coach in 2016 along with some changes in his staff.
Yes. Why is that even a question? But is there any evidence that he was actually the cause of any of it, or knew any of it. I.e. can you show that he was actually responsible for it, outside of a rule that says well no thought or facts are needed his position makes him automatically responsible. I think it's quite overly simplistic to say "employees does wrong" + "boss didn't know" = "boss must therefore be incompetent". Yet again, an automatic rule that is supposed to take the place of rational thinking and facts. Maybe he was incompetent, maybe not, but I want to see an actual argument for it. I would venture that most of us here could cut some ethical corners at my job without our bosses finding out. That's honestly never not been the case for me at any job I've ever worked. Do we all have incompetent bosses?
Let's look at this differently. Some are okay with 4-8 because of hard schedule, youth, etc. Tough OOC draw with ND and Cal, I get it. So let's throw out the overall record. How do you feel about finishing 3-6 in the Big 12 conference? Watching at least 6 conference teams fare better than Texas in Strong's second season. That's exactly what we'll be if we only win 3 of the next 7 to finish at 4-8. Horns Big 12 record over last 3 years: 2013: 7-2 2014: 5-4 2015: 3-6 Seriously, forget all the excuses and look at that conference trajectory. The strong OOC games may be excusable losses with youth. Still losing big to all the top conference teams (TCU, OU, Baylor) would suck, but some will overlook that too. But how about regressing further to lose to middle of the road conference teams now? If we go 3-6 in conference we will lose to some mediocre teams we beat last year. So we're okay with 4-8 overall, multiple blowout losses, and 6 or 7 conference programs now ahead of us in the standings? No way in his second year 3-6 in conference is an acceptable record. That's 4 games worse than when he inherited the program. Seriously people, that's nowhere near what Texas football is about. That places us in the bottom rung of the conference. Talent gaps or not, Texas football should never lose 6 times in conference. Finishing 4-8 will result in exactly that.
If Strong was not able to bring his baggage laden recruiter to Texas from Louisville, why would we ever consider hiring a cheating SOB like Kelley?

If CS leaves I'm hoping Bellmont will a make a serious attempt to get Bobby Petrino as HC. Let the good times REALLY roll !!!
Sean Payton is an offensive super genius. That guy makes in-game adjustments with no stone left un-turned when he sees a mismatch. Also has the full respect and devotion of his players. Wishful thinking.
