LHN helping or hurting the UT football team?

As a fan I really enjoy watching The Longhorn Network. There are some sports other than football that I can watch and the football coverage is great to watch even when the team is stinking it up on the field. I can see how the LHN could be a tool in recruiting due to the vanity of so many of these young high school players these days. However, it would seem that in times such as these, the continuous airing of dirty laundry that occurs on the LHN seems like it could be bad for team morale. It's not enough that a kid screws up on the field, but then he gets to sit there and watch his coach go over his screw ups with Golindo during Rewind. Granted, I have yet to see Coach Strong really give someone the business on the show but he's still calling guys out on cable TV. This isn't the film room with the team, we're talking about a national audience and this is going on every week. Then you've got Ahmad Brooks (amongst others) calling players out every week. I understand that this happens at other schools and the players need to be tough, but we're talking about a dedicated network where it's happening every week with the shows running basically on a loop. At the very least the LHN would seem to be a distraction to both coaches and players, and could be doing much worse damage than just that. Forgetting about the money and the coverage provided to other sports, do you think the LHN is helping or hurting (or neutral?) the football team?

If the team was 5-0, those same people [Golindo during Rewind, Brooks (amongst others)], would be singing their praises each week. I don't think LHN is hurting the team.

Not hurting performance on field, but hurting us as far as joining the PAC and B1G.

LHN is not hurting anything. It will also not be a distraction to the PAC-12 as their arrangement is really 6 regional networks which could and would support LHN as a 7th with an Okllahoma regional network with ou, osu and Tech as the 8th. Tech would not enjoy being a part of the Oklahoma PAC regional network, but I believe they are smart enough to know they are in the the PAC only because of Texas.

Good point. The door swings both ways. Right now it just feels likes it's swinging around and hitting Bevo in the nose.

    ?????
Each Big XII school has the right to do whatever they wish with their Tier 3 rights. The fact that only Kansas, ou, Texas Tech and Texas have chosen to do something does not make them the villains.

I like the freedom the guys are given to criticize the coaches and players. Oddly enough the channel that seems that it would be the least objective, is the most objective.

I know that OU and Texas fought for Tier 3 rights from the beginning but I believe that it ultimately hurt the Big 12 who lost Nebraska, ATM and then Missouri to conferences that have bigger shares. Only Texas in the Big 12 does better than the Big 10 and SEC schools in revenue. If the Big 12's Tier 3 rights were to attract Notre Dame and say BYU, then the conference might succeed. That likely will never happen and the only expansion options, i.e. Cincinnati, Memphis, etc. will bring little to no additional TV contract revenue.

So we are faced with a conference stuck at 10 teams and once again we will be all disappointed when our one loss champion is left out of the playoff.

It is too late to turn back now because the damage is done. The teams that left are not coming back and no addition will be an upgrade.

Not sure Texas fans will be very disappointed about the Big 12 Champ being left out. Our 4-8 bound program won't be sniffing a conference title anytime in the foreseeable future with this staff.

I could care less if Gaylor, blOw U, or the horny toads make the playoffs. Better for our recruiting if they don't get the extra exposure and national media stroke job.

So your idea of making yourself look better is for those around you to fail. I guess you don't believe in the adage "when the tide comes in all boats rise".

The musical chairs started before LHN did.

The tier 3 discussions among other things led to the musical chairs. You are correct that the fruition of the discussions came after the departures but they certainly contributed to them.

If Texas and Oklahoma would have taken a different path and pursued conference networks like the ones that have been proven to be successful in the SEC and Big 10, I doubt NU and ATM would have ended up leaving. MU and CU were always looking for something different, even in the Big 8 days, but finding two more schools equivalent to TCU and WVU would not have been difficult.

Who knows if a Big 12 network deal would have brought more revenue that the current deal with FOX and ESPN but it was the "my way or the highway" position taken by Texas and to a lesser degree Oklahoma that started the departures. IMHO

The LHN had nothing to do with the demise of the Big XII. Every school that left had their reasons.
    • Nebraska - could not corrupt the Big XII like they did the Big 8, and could not beat Texas on the football field.
    • Missouri - wanted in the Big 10 as a member of the Big 8. When the Big 10 said Hell No for the eighth or ninth time found a home in the SEC where they are number 2 academically to Vanderbilt.
    • Colorado - needs mountains to survive.
    • aggy - got tired of being taking to the woodshed by Baylor and Tech in addition to not being competitive with Texas.

It sure seemed to me that Nebraska left because of Missouri. When the "Missouri to Big 10" rumors began, Nebraska basically said "Oh no you don't, we're going to get there first!" and that's what kicked off the nationwide swap rush.
