intra-squad scrimmage to take place at Gregory with doors opening at 6 pm. You need to a print-at-home ticket or request a ticket by email. Be one of the first 2500 to get a free T-shirt or one of the first 500 students to get free food. Guess they figure the exes can afford to pay for their own food. BB season is almost upon us! http://www.texassports.com/news/2015/10/12/MBB_1012152249.aspx
Tom Penders first practice was in 1987 and this was before we even had done anything in basketball besides 1978 and the late 1940's.......not a relevant tweet, thanks to Penders, Barnes and Shaka is the reason that there is a crowd for the first practice. Matter of fact it is a pretty ignorant tweet, lack of knowledge of Texas BB history, not to mention ESPN had not created all the hoopla about midnight practice first day of college basketball yet........
Kentucky and KU had over 15K people attend "midnight madness" practices going back to the 70s. Why bring ESPN into it?
Because they televised it and then all the other schools did it to get on ESPN. What else is there to do in Kentucky and Kansas at midnight during the week?
A unique beginning to the new regime at old Gregory Gym, that would be most interesting to most Longhorn fans. Yet once more for a worthy event, no live LHN coverage, still showing reruns of reruns. What is this television channel for again? Men's basketball to hold "Texas Tip Off" at Gregory Gym - Burnt Orange Nation
Would love to hear comments from those in attendance; and see a video or two from someone in the stands.
Here's the write up. Texas Longhorns Athletics - Roach leads White to 72-63 win at Texas Tip-Off Men's Basketball scrimmage
Per Horns247: A packed house at Gregory Gym got the first glimpse of Shaka Smart and the 2015-16 Texas Longhorns on Wednesday night during the Texas Tip-Off intrasquad scrimmage. The on-campus crowd of 3,129 fans saw the White team top the Orange squad, 72-63, amidst a tremendous atmosphere. “For mid-October and a month away before our home opener, that was great to see,” Smart said. “This turnout tonight shows our team that if we give our fans a great product and play aggressive and with enthusiasm, they will support us.” On the floor the White team was led by a game-high 18 points and five assists from freshman guard Kerwin Roach and an 11-point, five rebound performance from junior forward Shaquille Cleare. The Orange team was paced by a team-high 16 points from freshman Tevin Mack and 12-point, 12-rebound double-double from senior post Cameron Ridley. “I thought about mixing up the teams during the game, but our guys get so competitive and talking that I wanted one team to come out ahead so we could use that as a learning investment.” Roach, Clear, freshman Eric Davis (16 points) and sophomore Jordan Barnett (nine points) were all on the victorious White team. It was a squad where the only established veterans were seniors Connor Lammert (eight points, five rebounds) and Demarcus Holland (10 points, three assists and two rebounds). “We heard the teams and they thought they were going to beat us because they had all of that experience,” Holland said. “I told those young guys, 'y'all want to play?' The season is right around the corner and this is where you prove that you belong.” “I thought thought the White team did a better job of staying connected around the plan,” Smart said. “The Orange team got down early and guys got a little bummed out. “The good teams respond and the good players respond,” he added. “Quite frankly, we've got some guys who need to take a jump in that area.”
WOW! This team should be so much better than last year's team with all the new additions. Just seems to have a lot of quality depth all the way around. I think you could say it is a better version of the team the Horns had the year after Durant left. I am pumped!
