OUR RUN GAME SUCKS!

Aside from broken play QB scrambles we SUCK! Running backs were 17 carries for 45 yards. As with just about every game last year the best running back played for our opponent. HOW do 2 and 3 star guys that we passed out beat us every week.

My understanding is that Rice started two OL who had 2 games experience. They manhandled our DL!

Is it coaching, or total lack of talent?

Rice's run game was good but they got beat. This is one area we will get better at because of Heard's dual threat.

Our run game is weak because our O line is weak. Are you really so blind that you can't see it?

I don't remember many runs up the gut.
Seemed we were always trying to get around the corner and not making it.
I would rather see more straight ahead.
Hell, bring in a fullback to block.

were you replying to creek? LikeMike's post address the OL experience comparison. I just wonder if the War Owl's OL looked so good because out DL is so weak.

A comparison between their DL and ours would also be appropriate.

I think the issues are that our D line is very mediocre, and Bedford's three down lineman scheme is so very weak against the run, that average run games appear unstoppable. Also, Rice has a clear run first identity. Their players are chosen and trained from day one for that scheme.

Review the tape, and it is clear that when we had four guys with a hand on the ground and three LBs close to the LOS (4-3 defense) we controlled their run game. But Vance is stubborn and played the three/three repeatedly. And the back three were unable to quickly fill the holes and stop the runner's progress. They got pushed back 5 - 6 yards before the back was stopped. Rice kept going to the well, and why not. Do it till you're stopped, and we rarely stopped them.

Coaches at Texas who can make changes during the game are rare since Royal.

Yeah I hate that 3-3 look. And not just from a traditional "We're Texas and we run a 4-3 around here" standpoint. I just think it takes a really experienced and alert group of LBs to be able to identify the gap and get to it quickly enough that you're not ceding three yards per play.

It did not suck this week.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Thank the OL first - 313 yards rushing versus the sooners Sat. set a record - better than our Wishbone era offenses ever did against them.

Yep. Our O Line has improved a lot since week 1. I hope they continue on this trajectory.

It didn't suck this week, but let's not start pretending we're now a solid running team. We're not. Our RBs averaged under 4 per carry if you take out the 81-yarder, which was admitedly a well-blocked play but had more to do with OU running itself out of position than it did us dominating physically.

It's coming along for sure. We can see the improvements. I also see a certain area along that line that continues to be a liability. Anyone thinking we're going to run for 300 against K State is probably in for a disappointment.

I do not for one second believe we are a rolling ball of butcher knives, but clearly we have improved during the season, and if we continue to improve we could become a very dangerous offensive group.

It's moving in the right direction for sure. I actually had thought about starting a post - mainly because I've been a little surprised at how people are throwing around the phrase "domination" (not on this thread) on some sites I've visited. It makes me feel like we're so removed from a dominating running game that we don't really know what it looks like anymore.

I still think we're holding it together with duct tape at this point and that won't change until at least two of the young guys really step up (Jake? Elijah? I'm looking at you two guys!) and become solid starter options, which I think they will.

I'm curious as to who put together that collection of plays for last week. The misdirection, the pulling guards, lots of moving parts. I liked it a lot. It confused the land thieves and their LBs were constantly out of position. Unfortunately, if there was one word to describe the purple wizard's defenses, it would be "disciplined." I don't know how good their D front is, talent wise, but they will be doing the little things correctly. Let's hope the same level of creativity goes into our next offensive campaign.

I think what we saw Saturday was a trend and not an aberration. The O-Line is definitely coming along, helped significantly by the threat that # 13 poses. In fact, that was one of the primary reasons I wanted to see Heard earlier than we did. I also think that Foreman is the real deal who may develop (quickly) into one of the best backs we have seen here since 2005. And, we have yet to see what Warren and Johnson can do. I can't wait.

KSU will be a very good barometer of the progress of our running game.

Please try to refrain from taking out an 81 yard run, the TD by M. Johnson a wide receiver, and runs by our QB. Every run is a run. Every one requires the entire team, one way or another.

Our team had over 300 yards rushing. The most against ou since 1950. I don't understand raining on this parade. Give them credit. They earned it.

Agreed. In a similar vein, let's cheapen our NC by thinking what would have happened if Vince didn't attend Texas. Bottom line: it happened.

I like the motion before every play, it freezes the DE and the LB, that allows us a slight edge in the running game.........whichever coach came up with that, good job. However, Coach Slippery Fox has a whole game film now, won't work against K-State.

Did the high hard snaps scare anybody else, especially in the first half? I think the way the ball got back to Heard and Swoopes faster definately helped, but a few of them scared the crap out of me.....had to change pants a couple times during the game.

Correct. Check to the Texas Staff to come up with a new wrinkle.
