On Saturday @22Horn posed the question in this thread:

“suppose Baylor wins, OU wins, ND wins, Iowa wins, MSU wins.....how do you rank the next CFP??”

All those things happened and here we are with this week’s CFP rankings.

    1. Clemson
    2. Alabama
    3. Oklahoma
    4. Iowa

    5. Michigan State
    6. Notre Dame
    7. Baylor
    8. Ohio State
    9. Stanford
    10. Michigan

Does OU belong in the top 4 after losing to a down Texas team? They lost to unranked Texas by 7, a team that Notre Dame beat by 35. And ND lost by 2 to the number one team in the nation. Is Notre Dame’s resume better than the Sooners?

Why not Michigan State? They beat two teams that are still in the top 10, Michigan and Ohio State.*

*Interesting stat: MSU never had a lead against UM or tOSU, winning both games on the final play.

Hey wait a minute, only one SEC team in the top 10?
Shirley, they will correct that later.

Looks like the committee is singing a different tune after bing called out by Whats His Face on their anti Big XII bias.

A lot of games in next two weeks, last year TCU was three and fell without losing.

Final of score of Texas vs. OU this year was 24-17, not that it makes too much of a difference

I'm sure we would really be bitching if the shoe was on the other foot and an unranked OU team beat a 10-1 UT by 7 pts (with a Heisman Trophy candidate) and UT was ranked #3 by a committee.

Plus, OU smacked around the two time defending Big 12 Champ - Baylor at their house. A crappy 3-8 OU team who hadn't won a game until the Red River Shootout in '96 beat UT 30-27 who was the first Big 12 Champ that year. Have a little perspective...

Notre Dame's comparatively weak schedule and lack of playing in a power conference worked against them. No surprise there.

If ND beats Stanford they will jump ou. If msu beats iowa, they will jump ou. Ou has to have everything break right to stay where they are, plus they have to beat osu. if tOSU beats mich then they're in the mix for jumping someone again.

IMHO, B12 gets left out once more when its all said and done.

    Prediction:
OU finds a way to win and gets in.

Stanford abuses Notre Dame and leaves them shocked and dismayed knowing come Sept 3rd they'll get their next comeuppance.
Stanford goes on to win the Pac12, and gets in.

Iowa meets Mich State for the B1G entry.

Clemson gets upset by N. Carolina to mess that up.
Alabama loses to Auburn or Florida, to mess that up.

Committee has to pick between N. Carolina or winner of the SEC limping home.

What if Alabama lost to Auburn and beat Florida in the SEC championship game. Would an SEC champion with 2 losses get in over multiple 1 loss teams?

OU vs Okla.St. is played this weekend.

It may hurt OU that they will be idle during conference championship weekend.

The committe has a history of having recency bias.

BS Committee. They give OU special credit for beating TCU with Baker out the second half. Baylor and TCU both had their starting quartebacks out against OU and had they played, OU has two more losses. The MNC beat goes on.

Florida could easily lose to FSU before that SEC Championship. Then maybe they beat Alabama.

Then there is chance they could both have two losses, when they meet in the SEC Championship

It's just one of those "off" years in college football, much like '07, '90, '84 with no clear cut dominant teams. Having said that, it's atrocious that OU is in the top 4. I can't think of a single justification for placing OU ahead of Iowa, MSU, Notre Dame, or even OSU. I'm all for a Big 12 team getting into the playoffs, but WOW.

People will say that MSU has won squeakers, which is true. But when push came to shove, they actually beat their hated rival ON THE ROAD and the #1 team ON THE ROAD. They didn't choke and get embarrassed by a much inferior rival.

Notre Dame just continues to win. People who don't know college football history are perhaps unfamiliar with ND's issues with Boston College over the years. But more currently, ND slaughtered Texas. Hmm. And lost ON THE ROAD to the current #1 team.

    Iowa is undefeated.

It seems that the committee doesn't really penalize for bad losses or give credit for "good" losses very much at all. They mainly give credit for good wins.

And because they do it that way, it is better to lose to a bad team than to lose to a good team. If you lose to a good team then you miss out on getting the credit for the good win. If you lose to a bad team it doesn't really hurt you because you weren't going to get much credit for the win anyway.

That seems to be the thing with Notre Dame right now. They lack the good wins of the others, and the "good" loss to Clemson seems mostly irrelevant.

It played out the same last year with TCU and OhioSt. When TCU lost to Baylor they missed out on getting a good win on their resume. OhioSt. beat the good teams on their schedule, but lost badly to VaTech (6-6 in 2014) at home. OhioSt. arguably had the better wins. OhioSt.'s bad loss seemed to be irrelevant, and TCU's "good" loss seemed to be irrelevant.

I don't really agree with the logic, but they are being consistent with last year on this criteria.

Michigan State belongs in the top 4 because they beat two teams that are still ranked in the top 10: #8 Ohio State and #10 Michigan.

Based on the criteria used by the playoff committee, if Michigan State wins their conference they will likely get a playoff spot...and Iowa will be booted out of the top 4.

Please, please, purtty please College Football Gods, let Alabama lose 1 more game and have no SEC team in the playoffs.

My reasons are purely for enjoyment. Oh the outcry from SEC fans would be historic.

If both teams win out, they play for the conference championship. Winner advances, loser goes fishing with Kenny the Jet.
