the dumbass aggie wanted to go to our brilliant school but our brilliant well paid coaches decided he was not a quarterback. If we had him for two years, Mack Brown would still be coaching us and we might have another national title ring. I said might

Manziel was a lucky QB, using chaos to create uncovered receivers, and having Mike Evans. If you contained and penetrated from the ends and flush him in the pocket- he sucked. See LSU film.

Well, he was a lot better than "lucky." He did have some NFL linemen and, as you said, Mike Evans, who made him more successful. Still, he had outstanding field vision, mobility, creativity, and a top-notch arm for a college player. Really, one of the best college QBs you will see.

At this point, the best comparison I can make is Amy Winehouse.

watching the 2011 aggie game on LHN I noticed him on the sideline during the game. The thought occurred to me that if they ags had stayed in our conference they would have won it the next two years and he might have gotten them into a national championship game. '

We would never have heard the end of that; as it is, they will never be free of seeing that last second field goal.

It's really gonna sting when Mayweather and Bieber stop taking his calls. Once the only pro association to his name becomes "never was"...the entourage will quickly fall off. You gotta have something to offer for takers to stick around.

Johnny missed the whole Bull Durham lesson...

"...if you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob."

Guy should've buckled down the first few years and at least become fairly good in the pros. Then he might've kept his persona relevant for party fame down the road. Who the hell will care if a flamed out Johnny Moron is seen at a party in a few years?

You can only live off your college accomplishments so long if you're a complete flop as a pro. Hell look at Bosworth. He was a college megastar far beyond Johnny. After getting his *ss smashed in the league, now he's a sad 30 for 30 episode.

Manziel (and hence, Sumlin) also had Kliff Kingsbury. At least for that first year. Was he gone by year two? Believe he was.

Of note, Ohio State also had Tom Herman for their run. Then look at their offense game stats of that Mich State game.

Adding up to.... an offensive coordinator is a key player.

First of all, Manziel was "lucky" only in that he played behind Mike Sherman's OL recruits.

    Huisache,

Feel free to use the quote given directly to me on Monday after I watched Tivy play Alamo Heights. I called Austin and told them I really wanted this kid. the reply, "He's a turd". Once again, Mack Brown spotted a bad apple.

    Brad,

Anyone with half a brain knew Bosworth was going to be a bust particularly after the game against the convicts. Barry changed his entire defense for that game just to feature Bosworth on national tv. We put together a betting pool as to when during the game, Switzer would abandon his "super star" and try to stop Miami. I called 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Actually, I believe it 8:40 something in the second quarter. Bosworth made himself into "star" with his antics, but remains the only player Barry ever kicked off the team.

It was fun to watch Scott and Barry beg him to leave the Jaguar convertible in the garage and only drive the corvette around Norman.

Hard to believe anyone with half a brain knew Boz would bust in the pros. Maybe some thought he wouldn't be great, but assuming he'd suck and exit the league in 2 years might be a stretch.

While I was too young at the time to analyze his technique, etc...the guy was a two-time All American. Not to mention he's still the only college player to win two Butkus Awards as the nation's best LB. Had to be more than arrogance and flash to his game.

I found this quote interesting from the team doctor in Seattle..."Brian was a twenty-five-year-old with the shoulders of a sixty-year-old. He flunked my physical."

    Brad,

His greatest success was the OU SID. Media relations wins lots of awards. I wasn't aware of the change in Switzer's defensive scheme until two D-1 DCs (they had 4 or 5 NC rings between them) were discussing it in my presence. They were going to bet one another on the change when a couple of other coaches got into the conversation, so I put together a little "pool" with time intervals. I never liked Bosworth and still don't, but he made himself a media giant and it paid off. Once the "assistance" stopped, the performance was greatly diminished. Perhaps if he had gone to Nebraska, his "assistance' would have been of higher quality and longer lasting.

I do remember Scott Hill telling the Dallas Times Herald that Bosworth had committed to OU, then calling Bosworth and told him it was a joke and to play along. Hill owned that reporter at the Times Herald. The guy would print anything Scott told him in confidence, and Scott was always feeding him crap. Back in the day, it was fun to watch and read. I would go to the downtown Houston post office everyday and buy the Times Herald just to read Blackie Sherrod and the guy reporting Scott's "confidential info".

    NB,

Manziel would NEVER do that. If he beats on women, nothing happens to him. Sheep are a different story. He starts slapping around a ewe and peta and animal rights activists will be on him like white on rice.

Actually Bosworth was one of the top 3 lb's I be seen play in college. He owned the middle and had wheels to go sideline to sideline. Basically the roids crushed him.
Manziel can't throw in the pocket, like RG3. He never used his O line really. He bailed on that pocket to create chaos.

Our coaches knew what kind of person he was, what his history was and the immense risk of having him be any part of the program. So did all other coaches besides Oregon who was on the fine line of probation already. I don't fault our coaches one bit.

Keep in mind it was OUR coaches that projected Reggie McNeal as a WR and VY as a QB while the Aggie coaches did the reverse. VY was not left to his own devices. Ask him sometime if you ever get a chance to talk to him, or a very close friend/family member. If you have not, shhhh, you know jack. He realized after the Washington State game his legs alone were not enough. It's then he hit film room, started trying to learn how to read defenses and know a playbook so he could shed the nickname, Willie B. (as in Beamon). Look at his progression after that game and his wiser decisions. Sadly, too little too late and did not get even another year to learn further. The blame goes to his H.S. and other coaches who let him just run without knowing plays or having other skills to go along with it.

I am so glad that Manziel is not affiliated with our program. There are a lot of people here who are Sooner fans except they were born in Texas. The only thing separating them from that ilk is a man-made border because their heads and values are already across the river. Yeah, you jackhat if you get butt hurt. Get offended and you know who you are.

Privately, Mack Brown said johnny Manziel was "a turd". That sounds like a brilliant assessment to me.

Edit: I see Sabre beat me to the punch on this one. Nevertheless, the point stands.

Manziel was demoted for lying to the coaching staff. Late ESPN report.
How will this sit with the A&M Honor Code?

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1...-johnny-manziel-demoted-lying-team-line-video

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel lost his starting job because he lied to the team's coaching staff about when a video of him partying in Austin, Texas, was recorded, a league source confirmed Thursday.

Manziel's account to the Browns was earlier reported by Fox Sports.

One week after being named the team's starter, Manziel was demoted to third string for Monday night's game against the Baltimore Ravens after social media posts surfaced showing Manziel allegedly partying during the team's bye week.

Johnny Manziel's lies to coaches true violation of trust
Reports that Jonnny Manziel lied to the Browns' coaching staff and asked friends to lie for him suggest the organization cannot ever trust him.

According to a league source, Manziel lied directly to coach Mike Pettine about when the video was filmed. He also encouraged his friends to lie about when the video was recorded, according to the Fox Sports report.

Manziel might have kept the job had he told the truth, the source said.

    Cedar Park,
The escapade? Perhaps not too terrible taken without the context of Johnny Wadd's off field trainwreck of past seasons. But turning into a giant ***** and lying to the coach about it rather than manning up and admitting it? That says all you need to know about aggy's glory boy right there.

Ditto. He partied. Nothing a bunch of other guys don't do regularly. But bullshitting about it and saying it was an old video and trying to pay his buddies to lie for him, that's a problem.

Reminds me of the Dez Bryant at Oklahoma State when he was asked about having lunch with Deion Sanders and he said it never happened. The lunch wasn't an NCAA violation, but lying to the NCAA investigator was.

I think it's some of both. Johnnie is not a normal 22 year old going out to party. He's an alcoholic (I'm making this assumption based on both his behavior and his going into rehab for over 2 months). You don't go to rehab that long because you just like to party. And if you know anything about alcoholics there are 2 paths. One leads to sobriety and the other to devastation. I think Cleveland realizes Johnnie is not going to have success if he can't stay sober. Again, assumption on my part, but that's how I would approach him as an employee.

He reminds me of Roy Tarpley when he was with the Mavericks. Tons of talent, can't stay off drugs. Just the drug of choice is different and alcohol isn't illegal so he'll stay out of jail unless he gets DUIs.

Johnny Football doesn't understand that he can lie a while at aggy and everyone down there will just go along with it no matter how stupid it makes them look, that doesn't fly in the NFL. What he got away with in College Station is just coming home to roost.

Smart move by Cleveland IF the intention is to trade him. If he plays relatively well his trade value would go up quite a bit. There are QB-starved teams out there that would roll the dice on being able to talk sense into him if his on-field production began to resemble the pre-NFL hype.

However, if the intent is to keep him, it's a bad idea. Since this is at least the 3rd time JM has screwed the Browns over, a 2-game slap on the wrist for returning to his party ways and lying won't drive the point home. It'll actually enable the "I can do what I want and still be fine" mentality. Ending his season would say loud and clear this was your last shot, try again next year, and anymore bs and you're canned.

I think Johnny has to be done in Cleveland. You run any sort of an organization, you can't have a guy who flouts the rules, is less than serious about preparation and still gets the paychecks and on-field opportunities that outstrip those of other talented people who take their jobs more seriously. Screw ups have a tendency to kill morale of those who always try to do the right thing, even if they have Terrell Owens/Albert Haynesworth talent levels.

Can Johnny be successful in the NFL? Maybe. But he needs to be someplace where people can somehow picture him not behaving like an entitled jackass.
