Jerod Evans, a Mansfield High (Mansfield, TX) grad, is the top dual-threat quarterback in the JUCO ranks. He has two years to play two and is a full academic qualifier.

    Evans named SWJCFC MVP
The record-setting season of Trinity Valley Community College quarterback Jerod Evans has resulted in him being named Southwest Junior College Football Conference Most Valuable Player.

The 6-4 Mansfield sophomore leads a contingent of 19 Cardinals named to the All-SWJCFC Football Team, which was released this weekend. Evans was also named first-team quarterback and to the all-region team.

In leading the Cardinals to a 7-3 record and into the SWJCFC regional playoffs as the top seed for a third straight year, Evans set a conference record for career touchdown passes (52) and set a school record for touchdown passes in a game (8) and tied the record for touchdown passes in a season (38).

For the season, Evans completed 179-of-287 passes for 3,164 yards. He also rushed for 414 yards and four touchdowns on 77 carries.

I hope we get him in here and let the best player win the job.

That said, Heard and Swoopes could both be much more effective by next year.

The chances of Heard and Swoopes being significantly better next year are iffy. Swoopes will continue to be slow to react in the pocket and Heard will still not know when to throw the ball away to avoid the sack.

    If you say so.

247 is saying that Strong isn't really interested. I've heard rumblings to the contrary. Could Charlie be slow-playing it?

Evans will sign in December and enroll in the spring. Somewhere. Currently, he has offers from Cal and UA Birmingham.

This weekend we had the chance to speak to a couple of people from Mansfield about Trinity Valley Community College passer Jerod Evans. The Mansfield native is one of the top JUCO QB targets in the country, and could be an answer for Texas in the short term next season. Evans played in high school with Hassan Ridgeway and from what we were told would love a chance to play in Austin. The long and short of this situation is that it will be up to the new offensive coordinator. Charlie Strong is going to have to yield control to that side of the ball over to the new hire, and let them make the evaluations and decisions for what they need. If Texas brings in a true spread guy to call the plays then they will need a quarterback who can be reliable throwing it 45+ times per game.

@Godz40acres Thanks for the update. Quality QB depth is a hot topic for the Horns now.

Belive Strong has said he is not interested in a JC or Transfer QB.

One site reported that Strong told the staff that they are not going the JUCO route - but that was several moons ago.

Another site said they have definitely reached out to Evans. A fan whose son plays on the TVCC OL stated that Texas has recently been talking to him.

I recall reading that somewhere, but that was weeks ago. Maybe he will reconsider seeing how things have turned out the last few losses, I mean...weeks.

What’s the downside to bringing in a quality JUCO player for a position that is not currently a strength for us? Seems like it would make a lot of sense but I’m no coach.

I don't know, but would bringing in a JUCO QB have an effect on our two QB recruits for 2016 and 2017? Would they say screw it and bolt somewhere else? That may be the concern. I assume these guys will be given a chance to win a starting or backup slot before putting a shirt on them. So that would give us Heard, Swoopes, Locksley, Buechele, Merrick, and a JUCO for 2016 and some non-scholarship QBs as well. My take though is that Heard is behind on development, Swoopes is a short yardage guy only, and the real competition is between Locksley and Buechele, and perhaps Merrick and none of those three have put their cleats on the field yet. Doesn't look good for next year right now.

There are probably 250+ JUCO QB's playing every year. How many make it and start at a upper half FBS school? There is a reason they are at a JUCO.

As BevoJoe indicated, the balance is do you want a JUCO for two years or a freshman for at least 3 years (but possibly 5 years in a system counting a RS year)?

I've said it before... if you're a JUCO and you want to play at a major college level, I think you have to come in with an expectation that you are an "extra" head that's going to have to step up and earn the job, or else you're going to sit. It's a gamble - but I suspect one he'd be willing to take.

The reality is that Charlie can't afford to worry about what a player thinks who won't be ready to start for three or four more years anyway. He better win now, and if he thinks this guy can do it, he has to try. Period.

My hope would be that the new guys understand that it's big-boy football and you have to compete. It's just one more person they have to beat out.

#CamNewton. Get this guy on campus, please! If a high school QB who will red shirt is scared off, I don't want that guy. #Let'sRoll

So what if a recruit is scared off....he won't be here in 2017 and neither will Charlie if we don't put a quality QB on the field next year. Does Charlie want to please.... 100, 000 fans and big $$$ boosters; or one kid...????

Good points by Badass and Prodigal. In 2016 Strong will be coaching for his job. Another sub .500 and the hand of doom will be on him. I don't know if anything less than 9 wins can save him. And 9 wins is still a "meh" type season. So, in short the seat is already hot. Start off 2016 like 2015 and I don't think Strong makes it to the 7th game. The decisions the Coach now better be good ones concerning new Staff and transfer or JUCO players. Another year of a lack of attention to detail and poor decisions is going to cost him. I wish him luck.

Didn't Auburn go from worst to first with JUCO QB? Not saying we will do that, but damn, from where we are, I ain't picky!

And combine Sonny Cumbie with a real dual threat QB, boom, magic! At least I hope

A lot of JC players are there because of grades. Kan. ST. has had good luck by relying on JC'S. Agree on it win now or goodbye for Strong next year. Then so far he has not shown much urgency in his career at Texas.
Then maybe he is waiting on New Off. Cord. and his opinions.

Nine wins next season would be 'meh' ?
I want to win them all every year, but not doing so does not equal FAILURE to me.

Okay, so I understand losing our 3 non-conference games (nd-home , utep-home and cal-away) would have you calling for immediate dismissal of the entire staff, but winning 9 conference games next year would be 'meh' ?
Many 'supporters ?' on this site already have expectations of L for nd, ou, tcu and probably bu. An 9-3 for you is 'meh'?
Alright then. Perhaps my expectations need to be NC or nothing

Alright. Just confirming what I thought I read in your post.
I believe that if I always live like 'second place is first loser', I may occasionally find some joy, but I'll also be disappointed quite often.
I'd rather teach kids to play to win and strive to always give your best, as an individual and as a team. That's all you can control.

After the game Norvell said they were bringing in another QB to compete this spring.
    Could it be?
