Should we really be blaming the offensive coaches?

Just throwing it out there. The universal opinion seems to be we have mediocre talent coaching on the offensive side and the coaches should be canned and replaced with somebody who has been successful in the spread.

Just a thought here, but I've seen offensive production that is exceptional in fits and starts. What do you do when your quarterbacks can't make the reads and the throws and your offensive line isn't up to producing consistent first downs with a conventional running offense? That's a problem Briles,Patterson, Stoops, Gundy and Kingsbury don't have to contend with.

The 18 wheeler package has given us a chance to see Tyrone Swoopes shine. Honestly, it's been so successful I'm wondering why they use any other formation. I haven't analyzed, but my feel is that we have a higher percentage of explosive plays from the 18 wheeler package than any other, and it is a terrific in short yardage offense. The package is innovative and successful and it utilizes talent we really have, not what we wish we had.

Heard has exceptional speed for a quarterback, but limited ability to make throws and reads. He can break a big one, but he's too small to hammer defenses. Swoopes is no speed merchant, but he's a patient runner, hard to tackle and faster than he looks. Swoopes has limitationas as a passer with accuracy, pocket presence and ability to make reads. He does have a powerful arm. Hell, we should send him to Syria. He could overthrow Assad and ISIS.

Our inability to mount a consistent offensive attack, particularly with the emergence of Foreman and now Warren, is simply inexcusable. We now have the most formidable ground game in the conference, and one of the most in the country. (Yes, I actually said that. With our supposedly terrible O-Line -- which I dispute, by the way -- we have all seen what our big backs can do.)

It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to utilize our ground game to open up the pass. And, it shouldn't take a Payton Manning to capitalize. Defenses "must" load the box to have any hope of stopping Foreman or Warren. If they don't, pound the rock. And when they do, where are the five to fifteen yard routes, routes that most pedestrian QBs should be able to complete?

I say no. While the offense has been frustrating as some points during the season, it has been the defense who has not been anywhere good, one exception is the OU game.

I like Norvell as the OC, enough to warrant another year. Our biggest change needs to be the defensive staff and QB coach.

What games have you been watching ??? All coaches involved with coordinating the offense need to be the first ones to go...... and followed closely by the defensive staff.

This, and with the right receivers and tight ends on the field and off the bench--they are already on the roster--to throw to.

The answer to the O.P.'s question is split: no, we should not blame Robinson (who it would be flat out ignorant to fire with the performance and the development of the running backs--whoever wrote that over at 247, whether it be Hummer or Jeff Howe, wrote a very ignorant statement) or Wickline, whose offensive line has performed quite admirably and borderline spectacularly, quite frankly (and Wickline has a record as a coach that is near Hall of Fame level, for crying out loud, and that should be freaking noticed). We should blame Norvell, however, and in my opinion fire him outright--he has had his chances, as the quote above indicates and as I have pointed out for weeks, now, and he is unlikely to get any better at these simple and necessary things, quite frankly--, and we should put Traylor on notice that his tight ends and special teams need to be better and more consistent and more meaningful to the attack, next year.

As I have stated elsewhere, I believe in Watson's possibilities and record enough, with quarterbacks and with offenses where he probably had less talent than we can get at Texas, to keep him on the staff, if not promote him all the way back to Offensive Coordinator, which is probably what I would do, quite honestly. I would almost guarantee that Watson will develop Heard into an all-conference performer, if not an all-American--the indications of improvement were already clearly evident in the Kansas and West Virginia games.

For two years in a row, we have started the season on the wrong foot (Ash going down and Watson demoted). Basically what we need is a good plan that starts in the Spring and follows through in the Fall. I think there is enough tape for a new OC to get an idea on how to proceed wrt personnel.

This is pretty much the consensus after the game from Ricky, DT, and VY a on Texas Gameday Final.

Is it possible that Watson was correct to start the year with Swoopes as the starter? Is it not apparent that Heard truly was not ready? Maybe the point was that we needed to invest losses in Heard's development instead of Swoopes. And who came up with the 18-wheeler package? Norvill?

As I have said elsewhere, I'm not ready to give up on Heard. The kid was thrown into the mix after the season started, and has had moments of brilliance, along with some mental lapses that can be associated with a lack of experience. Heck, I challenge anyone to go back and look at VY's freshman year. There were moments of brilliance, along with plenty of lapses. Back then many of the critics said that VY would never make it as a QB. And he had the advantage of a more seasoned O-Line.

While I am not saying that Heard is the next coming, I am saying that it is way too early to give up on him.

Seriously, not sure which games you've been watching. Since ND, ISU is the only game the offense hasn't done it's part of the winning equation. The defense has been our biggest liabilty. You just don't know who is going to show up from week to week.

And that most teams/offensive coordinators execute almost at will in any college game, any weekend. Sure they don't hit all of them. But they hit a bunch. And hit receivers open!!! in those routes.

OU's first TD... 1st and Goal... option run-pass, quick hit slant cross route into the middle to Shepherd. On target. Lightening fast. Have not seen Texas run that play in ages.

We scored 7 against TCU after TCU's second string were put in the game. We scored 13 offensive points against oklahoma state. I do not know that 20 against West Virginia was all that great.

Our offense for the most part improved from Shawn Watson calling plays (which may actually be the benchmark for the worst). It still was part of the problem.

Texas Tech had wide open receivers all day long.
We got clowned by a fake kneel down, when they obviously couldn't kill the clock by kneeling.
    That is good coaching.

We only get a big play when Warren breaks 17 tackles on one run.
We call timeout before a 4th down play when it is looking like we may really need them to preserve clock for a comeback later.
After said timeout, we throw a low percentage bomb when we really needed the 4th and 7 conversion.
    That's not good coaching.

Against tech, I thought we had the more talented team. Our talent advantage was once again equalized by getting outcoached.

TCVU's qb and Baylor's 3rd string qb each had more yards passing in the 1st quarter of a hurricane than we had sunshine in 4 quarters! The good news? Next year, we'll have a new qb with Buechele. He can't get here fast enough!

I've gotta ask you the same thing ... w/o scrounging over reams of box scores ... what's our 3rd down percentage? numbers of 3rd downs? TOP?

Those in/of themselves don't win football games, but when they consistently result in putting the defense on the field that much longer, and usually with a relatively short field? That's a significant contributor to whatever perceived failure is happening in the defense. (recall Leon Fuller in Mackovic's first year ... was Fuller's last season for daring to state such)

Naw, our D has played well enough to win. Only in the Tech game has the offense "scored enough" with the D fumbling and there are at least 4 circumstances in that game which if any one are normal, we win. If all 4, we win BIG. the pittsburgh steeler fluke TD, dozen/so playstation play calls, the one occasion the D was NOT ready for anything let alone the fake kneel, AND the depth chart which became shallower than a 2A HS squad.

if and butts ... I know.

As I review my little list of 4 ... the D isn't without shortcoming, but I'll stick with the 1:12 ratio. The biggest problem this year has been QB play and play calling. Charlie has seen it this way, too. That's where he's made personnel changes. I really hope Bueschell is the real deal!!!! Tired of "wait 'til next year."

I REALLY wish he'd have 86'd that 4th down bomb. "I don't care how you do it, but #25 gets the ball" Maybe we still TOD ... but that play call screamed "desperation"

Blind hope despite contrary evidence and the defeatist practice of settling have severely infected this fanbase. :puke: Who would be the most upset if we canned our coaching staff and brought in a top tier HC? The rest of the Big 12 and Aggy.

Watson is great a coaching a pro style QB and offence. Trouble Texas has dual style QBS. The offence is very bad and the defence is not far behind.

IMO after the TT game all the coaches need to go.

If Stong stays then hiring a top OC is the priority. And let them bring in their staff. Next is the defensive staff and changes to be made.

Our offensive pass attack was or is terrible, but the run game exceeded my expectations. We need an OC that can develop the both and a QB coach that can develop our guys to a higher level than we've seen.

Need to keep the head fake.

And the 'score a touchdown' play, as well as the defensive 'take the ball away and score' play.

I've seen some stuff on other sites that Charlie is looking at Doug Meachum or Sonny Cumbie... the Co-OCs at TCU for the OC job. I'm not sure if Meachum or Cumbie is the playcaller but this is getting really interesting. I mean that's the only way I can stomach a 3rd year with Strong is if he hires a top OC. There's going to be a lot of staff changes at various programs across the country and I just want to make sure we get a top guy and pay him whatever it takes before someone else grabs them.

I'm not ready to anoint our run game yet. This was one of the nation's worst run defenses. Still, we ran it all over OU. But not several others.

Yeah I'm going with Option 2 on this one. Running well against bad rushing defenses is a formula for self-delusion, because every line looks dominant when the other team can't tackle or fill gaps or get off blocks. That was an absolutely horrible run defense we gutted last week.

I think there has been much improvement on the line - but the critiques that CS was working with a bad OL coming into the season were absolutely right. It's to Wickline's credit that they've become a serviceable unit, and they may even be "solid" now, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. If they come out and run all over Baylor, then that will be a good sign.
