Horns face 3 top 15 teams in non conference games, with two of them at home. That's a pretty good schedule. :hookem:

ESPN put together their compilation of rankings and I think they're selling the Longhorns short at #14.

    14. Texas
    [IMG]
    2014-15: 24-11; lost in Sweet 16
    Points: 59 (10/21)
Notable returners: Imani Boyette (9.9 PPG, 7.1 RPG); Kelsey Lang (10.6 PPG, 6.4 RPG); Ariel Atkins (9.7 PPG, 3.4 RPG)

Texas might have really challenged Baylor for the Big 12 title a season ago had injuries not derailed a team that was ranked in the top five at one point. Fortunately for Karen Aston, the players that were healthy enough to get the Longhorns to the Sweet 16 return, most notably the post duo of Boyette (née McGee-Stafford) and Lang. Aston used a number of guard combinations with Atkins and Brady Sanders getting the most minutes. Empress Davenport, Celina Rodrigo and Brooke McCarty have more competition in the rotation from highly regarded freshman Lashann Higgs, who could solidify the point guard spot.

In a related article hitting a few subjects, Texas was written about as one of the big-time programs with something to prove this season:

"Texas: Expectations perhaps raced ahead of reality when Texas soared in the polls last fall, but so, too, did doubts outpace reason when a string of losses followed Nneka Enemkpali's season-ending injury. Forget the blowout loss against Connecticut; wins against Western Kentucky and Cal to reach the Sweet 16 spoke to how the Longhorns closed the season. With all sorts of size, what's the next step in reclaiming elite status?"

The next step to reclaiming elite status is better perimeter play. And i'll be harping on that the entire year. We need our perimeter players to be much better 3pt jump shooters and also have much better basketball IQ then they've had.

Agree rattfatt. It's the ability to hit 3-point shots to open up the interior for the posts so that it forces defenses to play man or at the least, an honest zone defense that doesn't allow sagging.

Taking care of the ball and limiting unforced turnovers by all players is my biggest area for improvement. That increases good possessions and the ability to run plays which lead to baskets.

Ugh...the Ohio State scheduler is a sadist. First 2 games of the year: South Carolina followed by UCONN.

Announced attendance for SC-OSU: 16,815. Not even sure what that would look like in the Erwin.

Yep, and It's a good thing that we're not going to play against Stewart and Jefferson next year when we play Uconn. They're putting on a clinic vs Ohio St.

Watching UCONN-OSU, do the SA Stars need a PG? If not, they need to trade out of that #2 spot. Moriah Jefferson has been the best player on the floor.

Connecticut is so dominant on the defensive end. Their defense set up their transition and easy baskets.

On offense Connecticut is disciplined to stick to the scouting and game plan. On each possession, they looked for mismatch and exploited it. The best analogy I have is they were playing unselfish basketball like the Spurs.

Ohio State was stuck tonight playing selfish one-on-one basketball, primarily Kelsey Mitchell. She turned it over a lot, bouncing it off her foot, fumbling the ball away with all her fancy dribble going no where. 2-14 shooting and 5 TOs. The best analogy I have is she was playing selfish James Harden basketball (and I'm a Rockets fan).

    Totally impressed with Connecticut.

Mississippi State may be a better test than Tennessee, which really should have dropped farther than 8, based on their home loss to us and their record of barely surviving lesser teams.

Interestingly, Jeff Sagarin's power rankings have Missisippi State ranked ahead of us at #3. We are #9 in his listing. Tennessee, after Sunday's game, is way down at #32.

Ohio State's two losses were to #1 Connecticut and #2 South Carolina, some it's appropriate for the Buckeyes to be ranked. However, to have Ohio State ranked behind Texas A&M after defeating the Aggies is mind-boggling.

I really don't buy the "they lost to the #1 & #2 teams so they deserve to be ranked" train of thought. Certainly not in the top 15. If they deserve to be ranked, put them down near the bottom and let them prove that they deserve a higher ranking.

I watched the Notre Dame game and was impressed with the Mabry sisters and their ability to single-handily keep a short-roster team without 2 of their best players within striking distance of Connecticut. I think Notre Dame should be #2 in the nation while South Carolina struggled with a not-so-powerful Duke, who lost to the Aggies earlier in the season.

Nice to see the voters not drop Notre Dame or Mississippi State for tough losses.

DePaul deserves to be near the top-10, only losses were to Baylor and Connecticut.
