In Texas, maybe....around the nation....no one compares Baylor to Tennessee. Times have only changed til Tennessee dumps their current coach, hires Mulkey, and jumps back to the Final 4 every single year.
Since Geno is only about 8 years older than Mulkey, by the time Geno is ready to retire, Mulkey would probably already be in Stage 1 of senility. Alabama, the 'gold standard' for football, had a few down years til they hired Nick Saban. And the rest is history. Mulkey could become the Nick Saban of women's basketball if she were at the highly respected program of Tennessee. Baylor has no comparison to Tennessee, nationally.....and, historically, only Tennessee and UConn are considered the gold standard in women's basketball.
aTm trying to give Holly some job security down at home 9 pts in 4th Q (and on the verge of 3rd loss in a row)
What little security Holly had disappeared after Tennessee blew an 11 point lead in the last 4 minutes of the game with aggy. Hope they call Mulkey tomorrow!
While we're on this subject, let it be noted that JPM has done a stellar job at running the Duke program into the ground too.
I think that Coach Coale or Coach Aston would be good options for the Tennessee position. Coach Coale is a HOF coach, while Coach Aston has shown the ability to recruit and turn a program around. If Tennessee came knocking, a program with the history of Tennessee would have to appeal to either coach.
I feel like everyone who puts the Tenn job on such a pedestal, is out of touch with the current state of the game/recruits etc
Coach Aston, Coale, and Mulkey wouldn't go to Utenn if the job was open. If the job does become open Utenn needs to get off the Summitt thing and hire a young experienced coach without any connection to Summitt. There are a lot of young hungry experienced coaches out there.
Tennessee doesn't seem likely to be a Top 16 host next month; not a good thing for a coach fighting for her job. When you look at women's college hoops, there have been some long-tenured coaches who built their own programs at schools like Tennessee. But, the successor(s) to the iconic coaches haven't had immediate success. It tells me that it truly was those iconic coaches, and not necessarily the school that was the reason for the success. Time will tell what Tennessee will do when it is time to replace Warlick.
I think a lot of that has to do with fact that most of those iconic coaches left when their programs were on the decline, which was the case with Conradt and Summitt. Look at a coach like Sue Gunter at lsu, when she stepped down she left a program that was still very good with some really good players and Pokey Chatman kept the program rolling.
had to call the lady vol program "on the decline" when Summit stepped away. They had 5 McDonalds AA's and 3 more including the #1 player in the country on the way. Not sure another coach could ask for a better launch point. and while we're on it, I found this excerpt from her bio; "Check the list of women's basketball's current top programs, and you'll find that none of the head coaches forged the won-lost record that Holly Warlick has during her first three years sitting in the first chair. The Lady Vol legend has produced an 86-20 record, including 42-6 in the SEC, during her initial three seasons as head coach at Tennessee. Her .811 overall winning percentage ranks her fifth among all active NCAA Division I head coaches, while her .875 conference winning percentage is best among all SEC skippers." to say she's on hot seat is to say Mulkey has a great sense of style. Just ridiculous
When a program like Utenn starts losing to programs like Ball state in the tournament, I would say that program is on the decline.
if one game determines the fate of an entire season/program then i'd have to believe everyone not named Uconn is on the decline?
True. But, look at what has happened since Pokey left LSU. She did leave talent. But, Caldwell is having a rough time this season after some success with Chatman's players. Just seems like a lot of new coaches are having a difficult time maintaining what they inherited. Conversely, some coaches were having to build some name programs from the ground up, and finding success as they put their mark on the program.
Well, it's on a pedestal because, next to UConn.....and depending on how you look at their program, nationally, and in the history of the sport....it IS the top women's program in the entire country. Just like Alabama in football! Just because they're suffering under a coach who is in way over her head, it does not mean that their program is not the top-drawer women's program, historically. Alabama football fell apart with 2 bad coaching decisions...now they're back to where they always had been. Tennessee women's basketball will do the same. Hire Mulkey! Get it over with......get back to where you belong.
Firstly, as glad as I am that we have Coach Aston, she'd not be considered for the Tennessee job. Karen is still in her "learning curve" as a head coach. We'll reap the benefits as she grows, along with the program. Coale, on the other hand, has already "topped out" as a coach. Actually, if it weren't for having had the Paris Twins with her, she'd be an "afterthought" as a top-notch coach. I like her. I think she's a good coach, a good person, etc. But she's not a Top 10 coach.
Idk why, but I have always hated that reference. Alabama isnt great because of the "history and tradition" they're great because of Saban. He and Urban Meyer could elevate any program to national prominence regardless of the name on the jersey.
At this point Texas is a better job than Tennessee. Not only is it better interms of record but also recruiting base. Coach Aston can walk outside her back door and recruit thousands of players in Texas. There's not as many quality recruits in the state of Tennessee as there is in Texas. That means that Tennessee as to recruit nationally, and that is very difficult especially in today's wbb when you're not winning.
Let's not go overboard. One season does not a program make. Tennessee is a legendary program. Yes, they have had a few subpar seasons as of late compared to their own standards, but Texas has probably only had more success than the Lady Vols during this current season for the first season in more than a decade.
Saying that Texas is a better job than Tennessee has less to do with winning and more to do with geographical location. Look where all the recruits are, they're not in Tennessee they're in Texas, California, and Georgia. And with the Texas program at the level that it's at Coach Aston will get her pick of the litter when it comes to players in the state of Texas.
Speaking of Coach Aston, does anyone know how long her contract is for, how many years he has left and or has it been renewed?
My bad. You did say "job" and not "program". Obviously, Texas is a great job or we wouldn't have been able to pull Coach Goestenkors away from Duke. The state of Texas has always been a hotbed for players; moreso in the last 5 years or so. But, that alone doesn't make Texas a better job than Tennessee. With that logic, one could argue that A&M is also a better job than Tennessee, especially when you throw in their national title about 5 years ago. When Warlick is replaced, we'll see they type of hire they make and where their head coaching job ranks.
Tennessee has never recruited just Tennessee. Quite the contrary. They've always selected the best players from all over the United States. Same for U Conn. They're not recruiting Connecticut players. Both have national recruiting bases from California to Maine. You're right that Coach Aston has great recruits to pick from here in Texas (not that Baylor didn't get a couple of recruits we wanted in this last cycle). And, obviously, part of my point as to why Tennessee needs to part ways with Warlick asap is because she's not getting the recruits that Tennessee is used to getting, nationally. Mulkey would tap the Texas market of prime-time players, as well as those she might want, nationally. Players from around the nation might not want to come to Waco/Baylor, but they'd be much more eager to head to Knoxville. Hanging on to Holly is the worst mistake the Vols could make. Their program is at a crossroads, and holding onto the past won't make for a great future for that program. Also, having Mulkey out of state and our backyard would be helpful to us. (not to mention that I'm just sick of watching her...lol....). But she's a fantastic coach---on a level unto herself right now----in the Big XII.
You're completely wrong on this one....history and tradition have always been the trademark of Alabama football. Saban is just the newest to carry the torch. Alabama has 15---yes-- FIFTEEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS....and 2 other "split" national titles. (Saban is responsible for ONLY 4 of the 15.)
That's Almost 30%!!! Don't get me wrong, im not denying that they have a rich history and tradition, im saying that it has little to nothing to do with why they dominate college football today. It has everything to do with Saban. That's why I made the comment that he could compete for national titles regardless of what the name on the front of the jersey says. And I feel the same way about Mulkey. For the past 10 years or so, they've had a better shot at winning a national title than Tenn. Mulkey built that, and her legacy there. Why leave your own legacy to just follow someone else? You think she could ever do enough at Tenn to have the court named in her honor? Maybe a street? A statue even? Probably not!! She's well on the way to having all of that in Waco. Just don't see why on earth anyone would leave that ESPECIALLY since she's pulling in top 5-10 recruiting classes every single year and racking up league title after league title and a final four every 3 years or so? We've all seen and commented on her persona and demeanor, does she strike you as someone willing to live in a shadow? Not to mention that her and Holly have a well documented and deep friendship, not sure she would take kindly to her firing let alone willing to validate it by succeeding her.
Mulkey will retire from Baylor unless she gets herself in trouble (possible) or the administration pisses her off somehow (doubtful).
I think Brenda Freese could get Tennessee to pay her as much as what Baylor pays Mulkey; she does have 1 national championship and multiple final four appearances. Not sure what Maryland pays her right now, but someone with her type of resume' is who I think Tennessee will end up hiring.
