The 1983 offense was not too good, but I don't remember the defense giving up the most yards in history.
There should be a complete re staffing of the defensive coaches. All of them should go, they are terrible and it is not going to get better in 2016 if retained. Where are the DLs to replace what we are losing this year and next?

Thanks, you proved my point. Its not all about time of posession.

Regarding coaching, that D got tore up against Baylor in the second half not because of injuries, youth, etc. It was because of terrible play calling. The D unit was no better in game 12 than game 1. That tells me everything I need to know.

I agree the defense got tore up by Baylor, but we prevented the big plays so we could run out the clock even when the offense wasn't exactly tearing it up. We need to develop depth so when our studs are hurt there is little dropoff when the second team comes in. (Notre Dame set a great example there.) We need about two more 2015 recruiting classes before that will be the case.

As wounded as the defense was, it made enough plays for us to win the game against a Baylor team that still had great running backs and OL. It has multiple receivers with NFL talent you had to respect, because they don't need a pinpoint passer if you let them run free.

Vol, you and Ivan Diablo Horn, see what's wrong. I wasn't thrilled watching the UT defense this year, but I see the seeds of an exceptional defense -- if we get talented reinforcements. I just hope recruits don't somehow think the critics and Art Briles really know something and won't come here as a result.

Except the premise earlier in the thread wasn't "play a bunch of freshman and this is what you should expect." Rather, the premise advanced was that offense sucking leads to more time for the defense on the field and THAT is where the suckage comes from. That was shown to be demonstrably false.

The suckage of 2015 has multiple points of origin. We fix a few, improve a few, we'll be a lot more competitive in 2016. Better offense means less time on the field. That's conventional wisdom in football and if some expert has refuted that it's news to me mb227. More points puts more pressure on opposing offenses to take risks and the turnover ratio improves. Improved experience should allow better reads and more third and fourth down stops. More players going through the offseason program, maybe we'll be stronger, less injury-prone and less frequently overmatched physically. There's reason for optimism. And of course, there are reasons to foretell impending doom. We all get to choose our state of mind.

Levine takes a position -- was a potential assistant for us

Of course we couldn't add Levine to our staff. Would be awkward when Herman takes over and an assistant here is the head coach he replaced at UH. I kid, I kid. :smile1:
