The sugar free ingredient will kill you faster than the calories in sugar.

Mighty-Fine is better than in n out. Plus you can get their shake...but you can't beat Whataburger, especially if the buns are fresh. If you cut out other sugars, a drink with a burger once in a while won't hurt your diet.

I used to go to Frans down at the corner. Now they've torn it down and replaced it with a Torchy's Tacos. I miss my cheese burger, fries and vanilla milk shake. :(

There are a lot of fresh buns at the What-a-Burger near campus. Come to think about it there's some good shake there too.

I still think about "Swensons" on the drag, back in the late 70's and early 80's, that place was great.

Then there was "Hamburgers By Gormet," downstairs on the drag by the Kinkos.

Over on west campus there was that place called "Mad Dog's," I believe.

    Per another poster:
I spoke with OU DE Charles Tapper about going up against the Texas offensive line:

"I played against them all four years ... I lined up on the left tackle (Connor Williams) a lot (in 2015), very physical guy. I guess Texas preaches physicality, but their O-line is definitely a physical O-line, don't let anyone tell you different. (Patrick Vahe), (Williams), (Taylor Doyle), when they get their hands on you, they're trying to finish you on every play, so they can open up lanes for those two great running backs. They're very good. You know what - they are very young, so they'll be even better next year. There are going to be a lot of people down the line who're gonna wanna pay them money."

That is 24 drops to go with 1000+ receptions and 98 TDs in his NFL career. Amazing.

I miss Whataburger. Shake Shack in NYC is the east coast answer to In 'n Out, but it just isn't the same. I was always torn between the double with cheese or the A1 thick n hearty.

I am sad to say I'm old enough to remember eating there as a child. They had a seriously good chili burger. I remember licking the chili and melted cheese off the foil wrapper on more than one occasion. Their burgers had a good flame-broiled flavor to them too.

I remember Holiday House and Hut's. I will throw in Beans, Branding Iron, Dirty's, Kirbey Lane Cafe, Dot's, Lazy Daisy, Hansel and Gretel's, and The Stallion.

Holiday House on Airport had the fish tanks and the one on Barton Springs had an alligator and a very brave duck.

Lazy Daisy had the front end of boat coming out of it.

The Stallion, the double chicken fried steak, with the legendary yellow looking gravy.

Dirty Martin's with the iconic burgers and pesky insects.

Beans with the big can of beans menu and a good chicken fried steak.

Dot's with the buffet of many varieties of home made eats.

Hansel and Gretel's with the downstairs bar and party room.

The Branding Iron with the great steaks, out past the Y in Oak Hill.

The original Kirbey Lane Cafe, nothing said Austin like that place did, back in the 70's and 80's.

I worked at a few restaurants while at UT, including the original Kerbey Lane.

Also Trudy's by campus, with the downstairs bar, and helped open a new Trudy's at Lamar and Treadwell, which has since closed. Trudy's was fun as hell, made a lot of friends while working there and partied hard. I totally lied my way into the job, told them I had experience. Restaurant people tend to be pretty wild. The owner of Trudy's was super cool, a former Austin cop. He really took care of his people too, especially if you worked hard and took good care of his customers.

Also did a gig at Wylie's on 6th Street for a summer, and Colorado Street Cafe downtown.

There may have been others but I was in no condition to remember everything.

Also I love how this thread is called "The Gilbert Offense - A Quick Look" and we're talking about old Austin restaurants and bars. Thread creep is awesome.

That Trudy's by campus, with the downstairs bar.

That used to be Hansel and Gretels. It's on 30th street, I believe.

We had a "quick look" at Gilbert's offense, then turned to old restaurants. This thread is versatile, just like that offense.

I think the chicken fried steak and the pitchers of beer at The Stallion were a great value, but not necessarily the gold standard of quality for a country boy who has eaten a lot of chicken fried steak.

As a hungry, poor college student, I was more concerned with quantity rather than quality. :smile1:

Don't forget the great bar burgers at the much-missed Abbey Inn. Beer, darts, burgers...life was good.
And speaking of quantity over quality, don't omit Hector's Taco Flats.

I'll always remember the handwritten sign at Taco Flats: "We reserve the right to serve refuse to anyone."
