Could Shane Buechele play this year?

Brad, you are right that we have a bit of an unusual situation with none of the QBs all that established even in the previous system(s), and certainly not proven in the new system. Plus the fact that Shane is an early enrollee who will get spring training, also counts. If he looks better than everybody else, he will (should) play. I was just saying that the chances of that are low, with true freshmen.

On the other hand, we do have a couple of guys with some playing experience to come in as back up if we start Shane and he has a couple of those off-games that true freshmen tend to have (i.e., looking like a deer in the highlights against some defenses thrown at him by a Bill Snyder or a Patterson). Swoopes would gladly back up if asked and he is well-used to coming in cold too. Considering all that, yes, playing Shane if he looks the best in practice, is not out of question or anything. It shouldn't be.

If by "best player" that means that he understands the offense, makes the quick reads, sustains drives, and is the leader of the offense, then yes, he should play.

i don't agree with that conclusion at all. are we saying that true freshman who make the freshman all-american team are the result of handicapped performance on their side of the ball and poor upperclassmen?

we already know our QBs from 2015 have issues. i don't think it's that difficult for a guy to come in and beat out the others. it's not likely, but it's not an indictment of the team.

Our OL and RBs should enable us to be successful regardless of the QB. There was a bowl game won this year by a team missing their top RB & WR. Best I remember, they had a WR playing QB. We will have a dominating OL with great RBs. I'm sure our coaching staff knows this! This will help them make the right decision. Believe!!!

Regardless of the QB candidate you think will be the best, I must say it is just nice to have enough QBs to have a discussion. It wasn't long ago that we had only an injured Ash and Case at the QB spot.

We will probably have a good OL, and above average RB's. It's not like Ricky Williams is coming back for his senior year.

One way or the other we need production from the QB, whether it's low-risk/low-turnover game management and getting the ball into playmakers' hands, or a deep threat with lots of big-plays, even tolerating some sacks or INTs, or a legitimate running threat at QB that adds in a lot of first downs/TDs in what otherwise would be a passing situation, such as 3rd and 8. I just don't think we have the OL/RBs that would allow us to say, we're running straight at you and you can't do anything about it.

Or, more recently, an inexperienced and rattled Swoopes with no one behind him whatsoever.

I completely agree; it's great that whoever rises to the top will have beat out some competition.

First of all, Colt did not lose his first game...the Horns beat North Texas in his first game. Anyway, if Buechele is the best available then start him. My concern would be is if we have enough quality wide receivers to make him successful. Colt had some pretty decent receivers and not too shabby of running back his first year. With that said, I would like to get a second look at the offense with the running backs coming back, a more experienced OLine, John Burt coming back for his second year and the two headed monster at QB with Heard and Swoopes. Then again, those same players still have me scratching my head about how they could get skunked by ISU but have the talent to beat OU and Baylor.

Swoopes came in from Whitehouse, another 2A school, just like Colt did.

He has never been able to translate his talent and size into becoming a consistent all around quarterback, like Colt did.

Once Colt got the gist of the offense and the speed of high level college football slowed down for him, his natural ability came out.

He had a very accurrate arm, good speed, and a high football IQ. He could extend plays and make them a success, without costly mistakes for the most part.

This is what Buechele will have to learn to do. It doesn't matter what level he played at in high school. Whether he can do this without a RS year, or ever is the big question.

I can't remember a true freshman ever doing this at Texas, on a very high level, doesn't mean it can't happen.

It will be an unsolved mystery till at least September.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess because it was North Texas, it completely left my mind. Ohio State was the second game them. Either way, Shane Buechele would beat North Texas too Im sure. As would any of our QBs. Our RBs and WRs this next year really shouldnt have any excuses for not being very good. The talent is not the issue at all. Texas has top level talent, and will this next year.

Yes, but Buechele wasnt recruited because he is a question mark. He was recruited because he has shown elite talent when compared to other QBs coming out of high school, and he is much higher rated than Colt was. That cant just be thrown away. A full spring and summer of practice, with his inherent talent level, should be enough unless he is Garrett Gilbert part two. It remains to be seen, but its not a stretch of the imagination to say that he could start day one and be similar to Colt in production.

Jayakaris has already said what I was going to say for the most part. I say redshirt Buechele and Elhinger. However good Ash could or could not have been, I think playing him as a true freshman was mistake that should not be repeated.

I think too many people have prematurely given up on Heard. I want to see what Heard (and even Swoopes!) can do in a real offense this year before going to the next guy.

Swoopes and Heard will have their chance. So will Merrick. They all will. May the best one win. Colt beat out Snead, who was higher rated than he was. He won the contest, period. Ash wasnt Buechele however as far as ratings goes. Buechele is a legit 4 star recruit who impressed at the Elite 11 camp. Im not saying he will be the starter, but I am saying that he has every opportunity, and its not a stretch in my opinion, to be the starter without redshirting.

nobody is recruited because they are a question mark. they are recruited because the coaches think they are good enough to help them win. how many wins is speculation.
