I think the term Rips is a little overboard. He described, in his opinion, what it was like, why it happened and what needs to happen to fix it. He chose to not be part of the solution. Simple enough, and when Tom Herman and Major Applewhite are at Texas AM next year he is going to feel real silly.

It is really hard to follow a legend, especially at a place like ATM, where expectations grow/grew so fast and out of control. Exponential expectations have been the norm at ATM since Johnny with Thrill, Allen and Murray...they all were the next coming of the lord according to ATM fans......fans thought they could just plug and play Johnny into that position. What they failed to realize is that he had one of college footballs greatest offensive lines in front of him.....and he still ad-libbed a ton.....

"A&M" and "Culture" belong together in the same sentence like "Cullen Davis" and "Innocent" do.

He's just saying what the rest of the country knows, minus aggy.
Dude has balls to call Sumlin out. Basically he was just gently laying out the root cause of the mess over there.

Post subject: As the Aggie turns (events of 2015) [IMG] [IMG]
Now that signing day is done it is time for as the Aggies Turn 2015. Some of this will be fact, some will be supposition, some will be rumors.

2015 started about as well as can be expected most people thought ASU would whip us pretty good. We dominated the game and were quite simply a more athletic and faster team.

However, there was some dissension in the ranks. By now everyone knows that Spav and Christensen did not get along. They had different ideas on the direction of the offense and despite the fact that technically Spav was DC’s boss DC would often dominate meetings. (according to players)

This in itself may not have been a problem, but players did not like nor did they respect DC they never bought into his style. This cost A&M Hudson. Hudson met DC and promptly decommitted.

The players did like if not necessarily respected Spav. This division would filter into the locker room. It was fairly obvious throughout the year that there was a Kyler vs. Kyle camp. DC wanted Kyler and made it very clear. Spav favored Allen.

The problem for the team is most players respected neither one. Allen was aloof and quiet and kind of awkward (according to players) simply put he didn’t command a room.

Kyler was not liked at all. He had a few core friends on the team, but the rest pretty much couldn’t stand his attitude and the fact that he was just not as good as he thought he was.

It was obvious over the next several games that something was not right with the offense. It was disjointed and had no direction. Most OCs use plays to set up more plays. The play calling lacked any cohesiveness. Before the MSU game Sumlin had a come to Jesus meeting with the staff. Get your crap together or else (according to AD personnel) Not surprisingly the MSU game was our most complete game of the season and showed what this team could have been.

However, Allen was dinged up at the end of the game. Coaches and trainers asked Allen if he could go and he said he was fine. Whether it was out of worry that he would lose his position or whatever he basically lied. Against Bama everyone could see that he was not right. By the time that Spav chose to make a change Kyler was in full pout mode and refused to go in the game and the very well documented cuss out session occurred. Players were furious (According to players). Any support Kyler had at large on the team evaporated that day.

Allen felt the attempt to put in Kyler was a breach of trust and started putting transfer feelers out. Players caught wind of this and the trust they had in Kyle evaporated. By the Ole Miss game players wanted Jake to take over Kyle was visibly hurt but would not admit it. Kyler was in effect suspended. Sumlin made a tactical error here by starting Kyle (My opinion). This is also where the Houston vs. Dallas rivalry reared its ugly head among the big cigars. The Dallas crew wanted to see a return on their “investment” and was pressuring Sumlin in a big way to start Kyler.(Rumor) Sumlin opens the competition and by numerous accounts Jake wins the competition hands down.(Seals-Jones tweet, players) Kyler is named the starter. Players are annoyed.(Players) Dallas BMAs pacified. South Carolina goes okay and maybe a glimmer of hope. However, players see near picks that were dropped. Western Carolina is a poor showing all the way around and Kyler has a crap game and blames it on the OL. (Players)

Auburn. Kyler packs it in.(Transfer imminent) Poor effort, takes a dive and pretends to get hurt.(According a player who saw him running around town after the game.) Sumlin fed up. Reopens QB competition. Kevin Murray goes apepoop.(AD contact)

Again Jake wins according to the players. Sumlin make a tactical error and starts Allen against Vandy(Personal opinion) Murray and poppa go into full meltdown mode (AD personnel). Allen has a good game, but get wind that Spav is gone. (Transfer imminent) Dallas BMAs furious.(AD personnel)

LSU- Kyle gets hurt Jake plays Kyler pouts and sits. Dallas BMAs start circulating rumors and feeding media about Sumlin’s future and the stories about how he has lost the program.(Rumors)

Houston BMA’s counter with feeds of their own countering and trying to make biggest Dallas BMA backer Sharp look bad. (Rumor)

Allen announces transfer. Players mildly surprised and largely apathetic. (Players)

Dallas BMAs lead by papa Murray make threats to cut Sumlin off if Kyler is not announced as starter. (Rumor)

Infamous meeting between Murray’s and Sumlin takes place where papa Murray makes a demand either to be apart of new OC search or be the new OC(AD personnel) Sumlin Basically tells papa to go pound sand. Dallas BMAs ramp up rhetoric.

Kyler takes a day to “think” about things. Teammates pack up his locker and leave it all outside the locker room. (Players and confirmed) Kyler burned to many bridges. Kyler announces transfer. Dallas BMAs go all in on smearing Sumlin. Stories start circulating about alcohol abuse. BMAs on Texags use the Zoo to spread rumors about player discontent.(Totally false by the way the players are very united especially after Kyler transfer.)

Sumlin targets Mazzone as his guy. Dallas Ags want to force Meachum on him and go behind Sumlin’s back to make contact. Sumlin contacts Meachum and lets him know the situation. Dallas BMAs go apepoop and feed the media again.

BMAs in Houston and Dallas apparently get into a pissing match on social media. Dallas BMAs want Sumlin out but can’t get buyout together without Houston or San Antonio BMA help. Neither is ready to make a move.

So unlike t.u. who despite wanting Strong gone banded together and did what was good for the program A&M splinters and completely hamstrings Sumlin’s recruiting efforts.

Two days before signing day the new AD has the media people put up the coaches on the AD website and DC is not on the list. He calls Sumlin and Sumlin has to deal with the fact that the AD released information without letting him talk to DC first.

There are rumors that the AD and Sumlin are not on the same page.(AD personnel)

Gentleman the left hand either doesn’t know what the right hand is doing right now or it is trying to cut it off.

The gilligans are currently out of control. This is why we will never get to where we should be.(Personal opinion)

I think that tl;dr post might be the moment I realized how ****** up college football really is. That sounds like a parody of a Friday Night Lights episode (or season of episodes I guess). I used to be concerned about X's and O's and which personnel fit where and which coaches were utilizing the players and that kind of stuff. That's like... nothing compared to reality.

And I'm sure teams like Alabama have drama too, but it doesn't matter if you have Saban and a whole mess of the best recruiting classes in the nation for years.

Our "slide" from 2010 onwards was attributed to the perception that Mack had lost what it took to compete, but I'm convinced that's only a small part of the equation. We had many issues just like that agtimes post: Cleve Bryant, sexy recruiting parties with racial divisions, Daddy Gilbert, not following concussion protocols, coaches who wanted out, etc. It's making it tougher for me to just "watch the game" without worrying if some recruiting handler is on the phone with a 17-year-old bitching about our scheme and how they'd use him, or what the party after the game is going to entail. I'd love to say I was naive about it.

Stumblin' "built" a program on the sands of that cow college with visions of grandeur, promises, gimmicks, catchy phrases, SEC hubris and general ******** . IMO agricultural & mechanical college of Texas is a coaching graveyard and it has a long history to prove it. Sumlin is the next coaching tombstone there.

As someone stated he did catch lightning in a bottle with JF for one good winning season. That year aggy enjoyed the most attention and success they have had since perhaps 1998 when they last won the Big 12.

However there are major cracks in the walls and erosion of the foundation of the Sumlin palace. There is discord in the locker room, player defections, coaching turnover, fan grumblings. There are questions of his ethics, decision making, leadership, managing the program, etc. Plus this was the second year in a row Daddy UT has pulled a bunch of top recruits away from them.

The clock is ticking on the Sumlin era at aggy.......

Well, he may get his chance sometime in the next 1-3 years if Sumlin stays on the current track. But some coaches, like Herman, that were "good" and had some level of success elsewhere, went to Collie Station and died. Herman should be careful what he wishes for... if he ever pursues the aggy opportunity.

Aggies are tough on their coaches and their quarterbacks. I don't have a list, but when is the last time an Aggie quarterback had a great senior year? The last one I remember leaving a popular winner after expending eligibility was Bucky Richardson, but surely there have been others. Tannehill and Johnny Football were very good college quarterbacks, but left before their eligibility expired.

Kevin Murray might be your answer, but there was that nasty probation, because of good old Jackie Sherrill.

I do remember Ed Hargett, as a senior winning the Cotton Bowl against Alabama in 1968.

He was from Linden-Kildare High School, so it was a big deal at the time, in northeast Texas.

tannehill was a senior when he left, but you're right about senior A&M QBs. tannehill was probably the most successful one. before him we had jerrod (got beat out by tannehill due to injury), mcgee (got beat out by jerrod due to injury), and reggie mcneal (beat out by mcgee due to attitude/injury)

A&M has always been a cultural problem since it was first established. My dad said he remembers that when it was announced they would let women in, the front page of the local newspaper ran a picture of a bunch of aggies throwing their class rings away. They reacted in anger to having women around 18-23 year old men... maybe that is why they are so big on having campuses in the middle east nowadays.

That is damned interesting about Hargett attending LKHS! I remember him very well. Did some research. So, Don Henley (Eagles) went to LKGS too & he is exactly EH's age...just 1 month apart. DH's bio (on Wiki) says he briefly played football there...must have been in the same class. Linden actually has some fairly notable people from there. Anyway, I'm a big Eagles fan....attended the Don Henley ACL taping last fall. So, your Hargett info caught my attention!

Yes, they were and they aren't fond of each other. They are on each end of the political spectrum, as might be expected.

Hargett ran for State rep and barely lost, Henley contributed mucho bucks to his opponent. They have been at odds on other things also in the community, over the years.

Henley's latest album is called "Cass County," the Texas county that LK is in. Linden is the biggest town, Kildare is smaller, they consolidated to make the school.

The main attraction in Linden is the "Music City Texas Theater." Big acts do come and play and the Texas Music Awards were held there, after being in Austin for so long.

Steve Martin was on the Tonight Show once and Johnny Carson asked him what the strangest place he ever played was.

His answer was the Linden Kildare High School gymnasium, as the opening act for The Eagles.

Yea, I sort of knew some of that. My take is lots of people don't "get along" with Henley....massive ego, alpha-male, etc. That had some bearing on the tension amongst the band members over the years. To show you my age, I saw The Eagles as the opening act for Jethro Tull in Houston in 1972. Also saw Steve Martin as the opener for Chicago in Palmer Auditorium while at UT around the same time. Went to Lee HS with Billy Gibbons....he was quite a prodigy as far back as Junior HS in the mid-60's. Some fond memories, including (of course) the Horns back in the DKR days!

    Thanks for the post!

Emory Ballard did pretty good as a coach there, at one point in 1976 they were number 2 in the country. Senior Aggie Quarterbacks, Gary Kubiak, David Walker both did pretty good.

IIRC Tannehill did a lot better as a junior than a senior, although maybe my memory is tainted by us having picked him off 3 times.

Hell, I was surprised to see on the Post a Picture that Makes you LOL thread the photo of the stadium wall at Pyle where aggy now claims NC's in 1919 & 1927 !!!

Ahh, some aggy revisionist history there. Because some obscure poll named them #1 in '19 & '27 and they claim them! If UT observed some of those old polls, we would probably have another 3-4 more NC's!?

Maybe Allen can't drink as hard as Manziel. That puts a lot of pressure on a guy to have to party like a rockstar and still turn in mostly amazing football games, with only a few clunkers.
