Radio speculation is something to do with Ole Miss violations. Maybe.

I haven’t heard the story behind this. Anyone know what the allegations are?

Horns247 has learned that Texas and cornerbacks coach Chris Vaughn are expected to part ways. It is unclear whether Vaughn will resign or be fired.

Vaughn, who was an assistant at Ole Miss six years ago, may have been implicated in part of the NCAA allegations recently levied against Ole Miss.

Many of the violations involve the staff of current Rebel head coach Hugh Freeze, but per an ESPN report, four of the violations are attached to former Ole Miss staffers under former head coach Houston Nutt.

Vaughn coached for the Rebels from 2008 to 2011 and served as the team’s defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Sources tell Horns247 the facts against Vaughn “were damning."

The University and Vaughn are expected to reach a settlement of his contract, per a source.

Under his initial two-year contract, acquired by Horns247 through an Open Records request, with Texas, which went into effect on Jan. 21, 2014, Vaughn made an annual base salary of $245,000 a year. Vaughn's contract expired on Jan. 30, but his deal was expected to be picked up again, multiple sources tell Horns247.

Texas head coach Charlie Strong hired Vaughn as a member of his initial staff two years ago. In the time since Vaughn has proved a key recruiter for the Longhorns and helped develop the team’s young stable of defensive backs, a group that included two true freshman starters last season. Vaughn also served as Texas' special teams coordinator during the 2014 season.

Hookem.com: Chris Vaughn leaving Texas after being implicated in Ole Miss scandal

It’s believed NCAA investigators have “a thick file” on Vaughn from his time as an Ole Miss assistant from 2008 to 2011, a UT source told the American-Statesman. The source said Texas officials have no reason to believe Vaughn did anything improper with the Longhorns.

Does this have any affect on the guys that signed with Texas? Like can Brandon Jones or any of the other DBs elect to go somewhere else after signing?

Keep players accused of sexual assault ("let law take care of perps") because we don't want them to sue, but release coaches for alleged recruiting violations so NCAA doesn't frown on us? You have an interesting take on things, Amigo.

I never said keep players. I think they should be suspended indefinitely from the team until situation is settled, and the University shouldn't kick them out until they are proven guilty. I had no problem with Charlie booting the guys under his core value standard of "respecting" women.
From what I have read the NCAA has the goods on Vaughn, thus Charlie needed to can him to comply with his own core values.

I wouldn't be sad at all if it is Akina, but isn't he more of a man guy than a zone guy? I think Charlie and Bedford prefer zone defenses and Akina may not fit all that well. But then again, we are talking about Aklina. The man has forgotten more about secondary coaching than most coaches ever learned, and he will coach the position well. I also would wonder about how much fire he has left in him, and also if he would mesh with the younger "hustling-type" assistants who seem to work better with Charlie. In these things, sometimes chemistry is the most important factor to consider.

I agree, it might not be a slam dunk to bring Akina back, and you elucidated many good reasons why. I think the age difference might be the primary block to forging strong chemistry with the current staff. With that said, who is out there that is younger, fiery, reasonably proven, and has Texas (the State) ties?

I say move Bedford to "Co-DC and DBs" coach, and hire someone else to be Co-DC and "pass game coordinator" or something like Bedford's old role.

I'd be surprised if it's Akina.
Pretty big philosophical difference, zone or man.

I remember when DBU wasn't afraid of a little man coverage. Also helped our DBs for the next level.

Not at all sad to see Vaughn go. I was never happy with that hire and I do not think our DBs ever played that well under him. I am excited for the next guy because I think Coach Strong will make an upgrade like he did with our offensive coordinator.

Are my recollections wrong, or was Akina's disposition a significant part of the defensive dysfunction during the later stages of his tenure here? Basically, 'this is my fiefdom and I'm looking out for number 1. Good luck with the front 7.' Seriously, am I misremembering?

As I recall, one of the big issues we had on defense was that Mack basically let Akina run the secondary how he wanted. So we had a difficult time because you'd have the front seven running something and the secondary running something, and it wasn't always a good mix.

From what I know Akina is a great technical teacher and does a wonderful job preparing kids for the NFL. From a gameday standpoint, not so much.

Yea, I remember a certain defense in 2013 that shut down all passing offenses except one and it was against teams named Baylor, Oregon, Oklahoma, the only team that we had problems with from a passing standpoint was what West Virginia and Ole Miss? Duane Akina as a Secondary Coach, there is not a better one in the nation, as a DC not so much.
