Early speculation is all over the map. Here is a combination of several short lists floating around out there, with my off-the-cuff commentary: Bernie Sanders (VT Senator) -- too liberal, too old Joe Biden (Veep) -- too old, unexciting Liz Warren (MA Senator) -- too liberal Amy Klobuchar (MN Senator) -- seems like a reasonable choice at first blush Tim Kaine (Va. Senator) -- seems like a reasonable choice at first blush Mark Warner (Va. Senator) -- seems like a reasonable choice at first blush Cory Booker (NJ Senator) -- too liberal, and tainted by scandal Deval Patrick (MA governor) -- more qualified for SCOTUS than VPOTUS Tom Perez (Sec. Labor) -- very narrow experience Jay Nixon (MO Governor) -- positions on many issues not publicly known Tom Vilsack (Sec. Agr/ Former IA gov) -- seems like a reasonable choice at first blush Wesley Clark (retired general) -- intriguing option Martin Heinrich (NM Senator) -- don't know much about him
Given the makeup of delegates at the national convention, I don't think Warren will be any too liberal. Just like the Tea Partiers have made moderation a vice in Republican circles, moderation also brings contempt from the Bernie Sanders crowd.
I'm not saying "too liberal to get the nod" -- just "too liberal for me". Then again, given that my only other option is Trump, I'd support Clinton + any of the above.
Elizabeth Warren would certainly win over the Bernie Supporters. She would be a good attack dog against Trump too. The quandary that HRC will have is whether she wants to stake her general election campaign in moderate ground to woo independents or go more liberal to energize the base. I'm sure her team has a lot of metrics to support which direction they choose.
I agree. (I've admitted my ignorance before, so I'll do it again. I actually had to look up the constitutional term limit to make sure it didn't apply to VP.) I think Biden is too old and too exposed y already being VP for too long. However, I think a candidate like him (blue collarish white dude with a bit of a loose tongue and sometimes politically incorrect) would help counter Trump's appeal. Agree, but I also don't think she'd do it. I think she has a Ted Kennedy complex. She wants to hold the Senate seat and work on Capitol Hill unless she sees a shot at the White House herself. Aligning with HRC would hurt her cred with staunch liberals. Maybe, but Democrats aren't going to put two women in the ticket. The VP will be a dude. It might not be a white dude, but it'll be a dude. Agree. Agree. Agree about scandal, but is he that liberal? I know he has worked with Republicans on some issues. Probably so. Gotta plead ignorance. Probably too moderate. Will piss off Black Lives Matter people. Not bad. Too hawkish for Democrats, especially with Hillary at the top of the ticket. Not bad. I'd also throw in Julian Castro (HUD Secretary), whose name has been tossed around. He has a lot of appeal - young guy (at least looks young), good speaker, liberal but not too liberal, Latino. He also has a hot wife, though not as hot as his twin brother's wife.
The gift of the Trump nomination is that it doesn't matter very much. He will energize her base for her AND turn off moderates. (Hell, he's turning off conservatives.)
As a "anybody-but-Hillary" guy, I hope she picks another Leftist, like herself. I'd hate it if she picked a moderate democrat, if there are any.
Julian Castro married his wife before having children with her, unlike his brother. But he is a Harvard guy and has little practical experience, so that could help with our presumptive meritocratic mess of a party. One drawback: his department and he personally are pushing a plan to force low income housing onto upper middle class school districts so that the gap between the poor and the rich will be narrowed. The theory is that all the children of the meth freaks need to close the gap with the upper middle class is to go to school with them. No word yet on how this will effect property values (hah!!!) or whether the lads from the lower classes might be a tad disruptive or drag down the level of discourse in the classroom. Expect to hear a lot about this as the folks who buy housing in the "nice" neighborhoods so their kids get access to good schools catch on to what the feds are up to in their latest effort to engineer Utopia.
Huisache.....you hit it.....Julian Castro, would put Texas into play and bring out Hispanic votes......that would be a game changer.......
