(It's a lot less common with Eastern Europeans who spent 60 years getting crapped on first by the Nazis and then by the Communists.)

I'm not trying to get off on the conversation here but I want to say something.

What Deez says here is on point. Myself and my parents have traveled to Eastern
Europe and their overwhelming welcome of Americans is incredible. They like the Yankees and the Cowboys and boy do they like Texas! In Croatia, 9 months ago, sitting in a farmhouse eating lunch with that family they could not say anything negative about America. In Hungary we were told stories how they could steal cable signal in the 1980s and watch American movies while under the Soviet thumb. Mesmerizing stories.

Plagiarism confirmed. Does intent matter? Anyways, it seems Melania has more respect for the first lady than most of Trump's supporters. The "My little pony" defense put forth by RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer was the most ridiculous of many of the defenses. Paul Manafort blaming HRC for attacking another strong woman comes in a close second.

When was the last time you didn't vote for the Republican candidate?

I actually expected that as an entertainer, Trump would be able to put on a first rate convention. Instead, it's a ****-show that's rivaled only by the '68 Democratic convention. Melania's speech has probably been the highlight, and they managed to even screw that up by ripping off a few fairly inconsequential lines from Michelle Obama.

The power of the leftist media is impressive. Their ability to make so much out of Melania's recycled platitudes is amazing. After all, she's just the candidate's wife, not the candidate.

Did Obama ever apologize for his "Don't tell me words don't matter" rip off speech back in '08, or even admit it was plagiarized?

Coverage Topics. Election news during the primary period was dominated by the competitive game—the struggle of the candidates to come out on top. Overwhelmingly, election coverage was devoted to the question of winning and losing. Poll results, election returns, delegate counts, electoral projections, fundraising success, and the like, along with the candidates’ tactical and strategic maneuvering, accounted for more than half of the reporting (see Figure 3).[7]

    Figure 3: Coverage Topics

Second in terms of amount of coverage was the election process itself. Much of the reporting focused on topics such as the election timetable, upcoming debates, the candidates’ appearance schedules, and the rules of the nominating process. Such topics accounted for roughly a third of the campaign coverage during the primary period.

Substantive concerns were last in terms of the coverage allocation. The press did not heavily cover the candidates’ policy positions, their personal and leadership characteristics, their private and public histories, background information on election issues, or group commitments for and by the candidates. Such topics accounted for roughly a tenth of the primary coverage.

On the other hand, the tone of Trump’s press coverage during the last month of the primaries was negative. The mostly favorable coverage he had received earlier in the primary season had turned sharply downward (see Figure 10). Negative statements about his candidacy outnumbered positive statements by 61 percent to 39 percent. His coverage was more negative than that of any other victorious candidate of either party at any stage of the primaries.

To borrow one of my grandfather's favorite expressions, Melania's speechwiter's plagerism doesn't amount to a fart in a whirlwind. We talk about it because it's funny, but it will be forgotten quicker than a middle school locker combination. The fact that Trump lied about the plagerism is also no big deal, since truthfulness is not what any thinking person expects from him or his rival.

I don't care if she said "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Her grace, elegance, and absurd hotness while orating makes her the new owner. :D

As Chris Tucker said in "Money Talks"..."Don't get mad at me cuz I look better than you in your own sh*t." :p

I'm not sure which is more idiotic, not checking McIver's speech to make sure it wouldn't come across as plagiarized, or actually believing Melania had a clue what Michelle said back in 08. All she did is recite the speech given to her by McIver.

When I was in grad school I just happened to get to know a girl that wrote speeches for a couple of presidents. She was pretty adamant that most of the time the speaker knows little about the substance of the speech beyond just memorizing it and reciting it.

Blame the media? Really? After the campaign admitted it was plagiarized?

If Melania is so unimportant, why was she and the entire family speaking in primetime slots at the convention? Clearly Trump feels they are important. After all, they are his foremost advisors.

They're speaking, as you well know, to put a human face on the candidate. He's not just a business mogul, he's a father and a normal guy.

Except for Fox, the MMS is wildly-pro Hillary. They'd love to pick Melania apart, but they give Slick Willie a pass. It's a little like the NY Times sending reporters up to Sarah Palin's hometown and renting the house next door so they could dig through the garbage every day.

Link. If Melania (or Donald) had admitted the mistake but brushed it off as no big deal, it would have gone away more quickly. Because, truth is, pretty much everyone agrees that it was no big deal.

So are their words important or not? I'm confused. To state the evidence again, their primetime speaking slots denote that Trump/Manafort think they matter a lot. We're not talking 4pm web only speaking slots to partially filled arena. These are primetime slots with millions of viewers. Trump himself has pointed to his family as his closest advisors.

Regardless of how the reason for it happening, you're fooling yourself if you don't think the media would focus on this if Michelle Obama plagiarized Nancy Bush. This will blow over but this "nothing to see here...move on" in the immediate aftermath was pretty self-serving especially in light Melania stating earlier to Matt Lauer that she wrote the bulk of the speech. Does "character" only matter when the candidate has a D after their name?

I wonder how many instances there are of speeches on the philosophy of work hard and your word is your bond.
