#6 (AP)/#5 (ESPN) Texas visits #21/#21 OU this Sunday in the only Big 12 game on Valentine’s Day. Texas is 22-1 (season) and 11-1 (Big 12) with a six game winning streak, including six road games without a loss. OU is 16-7 (season) and 7-5 (Big 12). OU is 2-2 over the last four games, alternating wins and losses. They are 5-1 at home going 1-1 in their last two home games. They are 0-4 against the top three teams in the league, losing twice to OSU and are facing losing the season series to Texas on Sunday. This would be the first sweep for Texas since the 2004-05 season. Texas’ last win in Norman was on a 75-57 win on 02/03/10. Texas leads the series 27-23.

OU fans, at some posting on OUHoops.com, are not happy with the Sooners’ record, coaching, talent, perceived lack of effort, offensive and defensive schemes, recruiting, you name it, they are unhappy about it. They expected at least a team that was going to compete for the conference title. They are not happy that OU could miss the NCAA’s. Strange to see similar meltdowns going on at Duke and Tenn.

OU only has one player in double figures: Kaylon Williams (# 42, 6-3 RS Sr. F) at 12.3 ppg. However, six players average between 9.9 and 7.2 ppg. Peyton Little (# 10, 5-11 RS Jr. G) and Vionise Pierre-Louis (# 0, 6-4 Soph. C) average 9.9 and 9.5 ppg, respectively. Mattie Manning (# 23, 6-2 RS Jr. G) comes in at 8.3 ppg. Gioya Carter (# 25, 5-9 Jr. G) averages 7.7 ppg. Derica Wyatt (# 11, 6-10 Jr. G) adds 7.3 ppg and Gabbi Ortiz (# 21, 5-9 Soph. G) averages 7.2 ppg. The Sooners are third in the league in scoring average at 70.2 ppg. K. Williams (57-108; 52.8%) and Little (40-110; 36.4%) are the leading shooters for the Sooners. The other main shooters for OU are Manning (26-86; 30.2%), Carter (37-84; 44.0%), Ortiz (29-86; 33.7%), Wyatt (31-73; 42.5%) and Pierre-Louis (44-65; 67.7%). Pierre-Louis and K. Williams are the most accurate shooters. OU ranks third in 3pters taken in conference games with 246 attempts from BTA. Little (15-58; 25.9%), Wyatt (21-53; 39.6%) and Ortiz (15-50; 30.0%) are the leading 3pt shooters for the Sooners. Wyatt is the most accurate from BTA for the Sooners who rank last in the Big 12 in 3pt FG% at 27.2%. Ortiz’s 92.9% (13-14) from the FT line tops OU. Four players have taken over 30 FT attempts: Manning (34-43; 79.1%), K. Williams (32.-42; 78.6%), Pierre-Louis (26-36; 72.2%) and Little (24-36; 66.7%).

    K. Williams (6.1 rpg), Manning (5.5 rpg) and Pierre-Louis (4.8 rpg) are the leading rebounders for the Sooners. Coming primarily off the bench with two starts in 12 games, T’ona Edwards (# 2, 5-5 Jr. G) leads with 37 assists. Manning has 27 assists. Ortiz adds 25 assists. Little has passed out 20 assists while K. Williams and Wyatt each has 18 assists. Pierre-Louis and K. Williams lead in blocks with 12 and 9, respectively. Manning, with 24 steals, and Edwards, with 20 steals, top the Sooners in that category.

    K. Williams and Ortiz have started all 12 Big 12 games for OU. Little came off the bench the last game to snap a string of 11 conference starts. Wyatt (6 starts in 12 games) replaced Little in the starting lineup in the last game. Manning (10 starts in 11 games) and Carter (7 starts in 12 games) were the other starters in the game against KSU. Pierre-Williams , Edwards and MCKenna Treece (# 30, 6-4 Soph. C) are the other main players off the bench. LaNesia Williams (# 32, 5-7 Soph. G) has played in 11 games but averages less than seven mpg. Those ten players make up the rotation for OU. Little’s 29.2 mpg tops the Sooners. K. Williams, Manning, Ortiz, Wyatt and Edwards join Little in averaging over 20 mpg. Pierre-Louis, Carter and Treece all average in the teens. Seven players have started at least one game in conference play, including a new lineup against KSU in OU’s last game.

Horns have three players averaging double figures in scoring and a fourth a point of that pace. Imani is the leading scorer at 13.3 ppg. Ariel is second at 11.0 ppg while Brooke is at 10.9 ppg. Empress averages 9.0 ppg. Imani and Empress are tied for the most FGs attempted at 110 attempts. Brooke is the third Horn to reach triple digits with 100 FG attempts. Imani (60-110; 54.5%), Ariel (47-82; 57.3%), Kelsey (39-70; 55.7%) and Tasia (9-17; 52.9%) top the team in FG%. Texas is third in the league in 3pt FG% at 35.9%. Brooke is the main 3pt threat for Texas, hitting 45.3% from BTA (24-53). That percentage puts her first in the league. She is tied for fourth with 2.0 threes per game. She is tied for fifth in 3pters attempted and tied for fourth in 3pters made. Ariel (10-27; 37.0%), Empress (10-29; 34.5%) and Celina (10-33; 30.3%) help keep teams from focusing strictly on stopping Brooke from BTA. Texas is second in FT% at 72.9%. Imani (39-47; 83.0%) leads the team in FTs made/attempted and FT%. Ariel (28-34; 82.4%) and Empress (26-33; 78.8%) also excel in getting to the FT line and converting their FTs.

After starting off with double doubles in 8 of the first 9 league games, Imani has gone three straight games without reaching that stat. She still is one of two players averaging a double double in league play with 11.2 rpg, second in the league and tops on the team. Three others average over 4 rpg: Kelsey (4.9 rpg), Celina (4.8 rpg) and Brianna (4.5 rpg), on the league’s second ranked rebounding team (42.7 rpg). Celina (4.8 apg), Brooke (2.3 apg) and Empress (2.3 apg) are the leading distributors for the Horns. Brianna, even with not playing in two games, leads the Horns with 23 steals. Celina is second with 17. Imani’s 52 blocks are 21 more than the second place blocker in the league. Kelsey’s 16 blocks tie her for 6th in the league.

Imani, Brooke and Empress have started all 12 Big 12 games for the Horns. Celina has 11 starts in 12 games. Ariel has started the last two games. Brianna has 9 starts in 10 games but missed the last game due to an ankle injury suffered against ISU where she was off to a great start, hitting 3-5 in the ten minutes before her injury. With Ariel moving into the starting lineup, Kelsey, Jordan, Brady and LaShann are the primary reserves. Brooke has cracked the 30 mpg line, averaging 30.3 mpg. Imani, Ariel, Celina, Empress, Kelsey and Brianna all average between 20.3 (Brianna) and 28.4 mpg (Celina). LaShann averages 11.1 mpg in the 10 games she has played in. Jordan (11 games) averages 9.1 mpg and Brady (9 games) averages 9.6 mpg. Tasia (9 games), Sara (7 games) and Olamide (5 games) are also available for game action. Brianna is unlikely to be ready for this game—that is just my guess.

Projected starting lineups are based on the last game:

    Texas______________OU
    Imani (6-7)________ K. Williams (6-3)
    Ariel (5-11)_______ Manning (6-2)
    Empress (5-9)_____ Wyatt (5-10)
    Celina (5-8)_______ Carter (5-9)
    Brooke (5-4)______ Ortiz (5-9)

In the last game these two played, ten players got in for Texas, ten for OU. Expect a similar rotation in this game. Horns clamped down on OU’s outside shooters with only Wyatt enjoying any success, hitting 3-6 from BTA while the rest of the team went 1-19. K. Williams and Pierre-Louis enjoyed a great deal of success inside as they combined for 36 of the Sooners’ 76 points. Look for the Horns to try to replicate their perimeter defense while trying to slow down K. Williams and Pierre-Louis inside. Imani, even with foul trouble, ended up with 18 pts and 11 rebs. OU will need to do a better job on her to have a chance to win. Brianna did not score a lot but was able to help hold Manning to 1-9 from the field and not let her take advantage of her size advantage. That chore will likely fall on Ariel this time around but Manning will have to play harder in defending Ariel. It remains to see how much Little plays for the Sooners as she was moved of the starting lineup in the last game as she continues to struggle offensively. OU will be concerned with Ariel, who has played outstanding in the last two Texas games. Brooke and Empress will also present difficult problems for the Sooners to try to stop. The X factor could end up being LaShann, who blistered OU for 11 pts on 5-9 shooting in the first game.

OU was projected to finish third in the league by both ESPN and the Big 12. They will need a sweep of the rest of their games to have a shot at finishing that high, however remote the chance. . It should be a close game as the first one was. Both OU and Texas have strong inside games. OU is more dependent on their 3pt shooting whereas Texas is more willing to work the ball inside. But OU can’t afford to forget the Horns’ 3pt shooting which ranks third in the league. You leave Brooke, Ariel, Empress, Celina and Brady open at your own risk. That’s a lot of court to cover. If Imani and Kelsey can stay out of foul trouble, they will be able to neutralize K. Williams and Pierre-Louis inside. Both teams are going to run, hence the 9-10 player rotation each normally uses. Texas had 25 TOs in game one to OU’s 17. Both shoot over 72% from the FT line so neither really has an edge there. Horns should own the boards although OU is a good rebounding team. OU was better in stealing the ball but Imani swatted away 7 shots by herself to OU’s team total of 3 blocks. Still like the Horns to sweep the series although it will not be easy.

Game day is Sunday, Feb. 14. Game time is 1:30 PM. The game will be televised on FS1. In TWC in Austin, that is TWC 400. Radio will be 104.9 FM, the Horn.

It seems unlikely at this point that OU will miss the tournament. The Sooners would have to collapse. I expect OU to finish no worse than 10-8 in conference.

it is going to be a tight fit for them. Their best win is over WVU at home. Should they get in, I think they will be in a position where a one and done is a strong possibility. I have to admit I did not expect this type of season from OU.

Like brnkj said, this is one to be a very tough road game as OU will be fighting for a lot of things, including an NCAA bid.

We agree on that! Oh, and I agree that if OU does get into the tournament, they could be looking at an undesirable seed.

They are still in the top 25. I fully expect them to make the tourney. They also will have a chance to make some noise in the conf tournament in their own backyard.

    I'm uneasy about this game.

This will be a very tough road game. The games between ou and Texas are always close but ou is desperate for a win, so they're going to come out very motivated. Imani and Kelsey have to play good post defense and the perimeter players can't allow dribble penetration. Offensively, Texas has to do a better job of attacking the down ball screens from ou. For some reason Coach Aston and her staff still has not taught their players how to attack down ball screens. Rebounding the ball and making perimeter jump shots will obviously be key.

Not sure if the 25 turnovers we had against OU last month was our season high; but, that's what kept OU in the game that day. We need to keep our turnovers down to about 15 on Sunday.

well, guess the Imani-Paul Boyette story is the AAS pregame story of this game. Not enough a starting lineup with team summaries online for this game. Extremely disappointing even for the AAS.

i was extremely disappointed in the AAS too. While I appreciate the story on Imani and Paul, the rest of the team deserves press about this very important game. And so it goes..........

This is not the first time I have send an email complaining about the lack of coverage for the WBB team, not that it seems to help.

At any rate, two hours to tipoff! Getting ready to watch the game! :ousucksnana:

The ball handler and the player setting the screen have to be on the same page. When ou downs the ball screen the player setting the screen needs to screen the inside shoulder and the guard can try to attack the defensive post player and make a play. The player setting the screen can also screen the inside shoulder and pop out for an open jumper or put the ball on the floor and make a play.

Too often when ou downs the ball screen the player setting the screen will just stand there and try to set the screen on the outside shoulder so the ball handler can dribble over the screen, but ou isn't going to let them do that which is why they're downing the ball screen. When you watch the game today you'll see the Texas ball handlers trying to dribble over the screen, but because ou is downing it the offense gets stagnant. If Coach Aston taught them how to attack the down ball screens they could get wide open jump shots at the top of the key or be able to put the ball on the floor and make a play from the top of the key.

time for Monster Truck to turn off and get to the ball game! :hookem:
OU fans think Vivian Gray (2017 F. ESPN # 13) is in the house on a visit. She has also expressed interest in Texas. So good opportunity to watch two programs she is interested in.

not really playing composed. Four TOs in five and half minutes. OU's posts have gotten inside position on Imani several times for easy layups although she has recovered and blocked at least one shot.
OU hitting from BTA is going to make it more difficult.

Brooke took that shot too soon. She still had time for another step. Still, given the start, not a bad quarter. Good game to watch.
