Has Strong Lost Longhorn Nation?

With apologies to the delusional, I believe the subject line to be a legitimate question. Even the most astute historians would be hard pressed to identify a more disappointing fourteen game performance. Not in the Akers era. Not in the McWilliams era. Not in the Mackovic era.

I bleed Orange like the rest of us and I want to see Strong succeed but, instead of seeing progress I am watching a reoccurring and very disturbing trend. All of the enthusiasm I carried into the campaign was destroyed tonight.

Common sense suggests that it is time to question everything.

If Strong can right the ship I will be cheering him on, and conceding that my pronouncement of his demise was premature. Here's to my being completely wrong.

He has lost me, and I am hard to lose. This was an abomination. We have regressed. I do not see anything improving from here, my Orange shades are off.

Lost me too. The first words out of his mouth at the press conference sealed it.

Red may have been indelicate in his words, but correct in his overall assessment.

This is definitely NOT Power 5 conference football. To tell you the truth I don't know what kind of football this is.

I agree. Tonight was a replay of the Arky game. Dominated on both sides of the ball. Pass defense was embarrassing in how wide open and uncontested their receivers were. Even more surprising than how bad the O was (I expected bad from the O).

One has to wonder how much time Strong will be given. On the one hand, it does take time to recruit the players needed for the system he wants - but on the other hand, this is Texas, and the fans and boosters expect excellence now!

Strong has never really had it, not trying to be overly negative, but it has been up hill for him even during the hiring process everyone was after Saban.

I said give the man 3 years and I am sticking to that for now.... but i am worried what kind of shape this program will be in the more time the staff is given with the "progress" this team showed tonight.

No not yet he will get this season and next but showings like tonight make the margin for error smaller and smaller. I like Charlie I really want him to succeed but the coaching tonight mirrored the play, just atrocious.

Strong is horrible. As long as we have Strong we will just have to accept that we will be outcoached and embarrassed on a regular basis. Our only path to success is if he can somehow amass such a talent advantage that the poor coaching can be overcome. At this point I am not optimistic that can ever happen with him. Tonight the team looked unprepared for almost everything ND did.

My "favorite" play was when Heard was in there and he did the zone read fake to the RB, and the 3 ND down linemen were all completely unblocked and Heard got gang tackled at the one yard line. It may be the most ridiculous play I have ever seen.

I can't answer the question but I can say he lost a little ground with me tonight. I am far from giving up on him or the team, but I have few words right now as I am still stunned over the *** beating this team and these coaches just took.

I am going to bed and worry about all of this later....

No Strong has not lost me, you people got to realize how devoid of talent the O-line was when Strong took over. I doubt Joe Montana could look good behind that bunch. Case in point look at the ND QB, making his first start he was good and his Oline was the difference.

#11 team on the road with quite a bit more experience. 2 freshmen starters on OL in their first game ever. Freshman starting IMLB and a host of other freshmen getting significant playing time. Two QBs who Strong didnt recruit.

One season of complete rebuilding plus a tough game on the road and people already want to jump ship?

Lunacy. Year 3 is where Strong puts up or shuts up. Way way way too early this season to say anything. If we had played Ohio State and lost 55-0 would that have been better? Or if we had played Texas State and won 24-7? Hell, #2 TCU barely beat Minnesota. Should Gary Patterson be fired?

    People need to chill.

    FOLKS, THIS IS THE TRUTH!!!
    Mack hood-winked us for years....YEARS!
    Our cupboard was bare.....

IF everyone remembers that the only positives from last year were defensive brilliance at times that made us competitive.....WE LOST ALMOST ALL THOSE GUYS!!! The whole off-season that was all I could focus on.....could NOT see this year being anything but a beat down.....and HE WE ARE!!! I don't see us beating RICE!

Ultimately this doesn't change anything. The timeline was what it was. I kind of think you guys are expecting miracles out of a staff based on what I saw out there.

When you physically cannot block anyone, you can draw up all the great plays you want, but it's not going to make any difference.

The defense was the most disappointing. We were clearly sold a bill of goods on the front four, which were just awful. Maybe Notre Dame is just that good up front, but I got the impression that the coaches thought Poona Ford was right there with Tank and Ridgeway in terms of play level, and now that I see what that looks like on the field, it's deeply troubling.

Fans expected instant results last year so I don't care what the pulse of the 'general' fan is regarding this. We all have been drinking the kool-aid listening to local radio cover this team and have higher expectations than what we should. We played a really good team on the road for a season opener. Too young of a team with a poor QB to be ready. I want to see changes in QB but I am giving Coach Strong this year and next. Coach Strong was given an enormous fixer upper when he took this job. He has had to nearly tear down the entire house and reframe it. It is going to take time.

A lot of us around here felt we were too soft at times under Mack Brown. That was supposed to change with Strong, Vance, Moorer, The Pit, etc. I saw last night a softer hitting, arm tackling team than I have seen around here in years. I expected, reasonably I think, to see some toughness. To see us, as Charlie said, hit ND in the mouth. We stuck our tongues out at them and then ran away, like 10 year old girls.

While I hate to lose, I can stomach a competitive performance that results in a loss. What I cannot stomach is a complete meltdown, or the inability to compete. As I said at the top, we have had more compete meltdowns in Strong's first 14 games than I can remember in "any" fourteen game period, ever.

I just don't buy the " the cupboard was completely bare" excuse, not for what I saw last night, and not for what I saw against BYU, TCU and Arkansas. We have all seen many coaches due much more, with much less.

Perhaps Strong will right the ship sooner than I am expecting and, if so, I will be thrilled. But to suggest that what we have seen, regardless of the excuses, is anything other than an abmismal coaching performance is to deny what we are observing with our own eyes.

When the team exhibits the ability to perform at an acceptable level I will acknowledge it. As of now and so far, there is little to acknowledge accept disappointment.

If Charlie Strong or his staff were to read this post, I doubt that they would disagree with any of the observations.

I remain on the Charlie Strong bandwagon. Building the program the right way. Notre Dame is REALLY good this year. OL is in my opinion the best in college football.
Horns youth in OL and inexcellence at QB were too much to overcome against a physical, experienced Fighting Irish squad. The good news is that improvement between game one and game two, especially for true frosh, is dramatic.

With that said, as I flip the channels I see overmatched college offenses that can do SOMETHING right.

All the talk of toughness, The Pit, etc. is all talk. I am sick of talk about how tough we will be. We ran scared from play 1 last night. Time to put up or shut up with all the tough talk and cute Vance quotes.

It took getting embarrassed by OU a number of times, along with BYU, before I finally turned on Mack.
Strong is fielding a freshman laden team in hopes of building for the future.
I'm not sure I like what I see out of Watson.
I'm buckled in for a bumpy ride.

We haven't had an OLine since 08. Haven't have a QB since 09. it's obvious that Swoopes is done. We didn't land a QB in last years class (not one close to being ready to play). That was a miss Strong could not afford to have. Meanwhile Murray rushes for 69 yds in limited playing time. The aggs look like they finally have a D. We are kind of like a blackberry at this point. Nobody really gives a damn about us, we're not cool, and we suck.

If we go 6-6 again, time for Strong to be shown the door. Hell SMU has midgets on their team and they can still run an offense. I wait all summer for college football and I'm already done. I'll be fishing on Saturdays from now on. Least I can get some relaxation on the lake instead of cursing at the dog.
