Patterson pissed off everybody, including the Big Cigars. You can't do that.

I read a quote in the Express-News today from Red McCombs that started out something like; "forget about Patterson...". I wonder if he knew already?

Hopefully UT can do a better job of hiring a new AD. Hard to understand that nobody really knew this guy before we offered him a huge salary and juicy buyout.

    Spoke,

He was known for who he is and what he is. Powers wouldn't listen. That's why I told Powers it would take The University of Texas twenty years to recover from his stupidity. I then told Bill to get his resume together because he wouldn't be there on Jan 1. Cigueroa gave him until June.

This is like the Mackovic hire, when the administration (not just Deloss, who had nothing to do with hiring Mackovic) was warned giving first hand accounts of the player revolt in Kansas City. Cunningham, like Powers, was solely responsible for that debacle.

Mack is a great ambassader but what about the money side? It is still very important; contrats, hiring people, etc... can he handle all that? Maybe we should hire Sally....

Maybe we should start tallying votes?
Here is one for Mack Brown Texas Football (I wonder if he saved that domain name?)

That ESPN blurb is wrong. Powers hired Strong; Patterson had relatively little to do with the desire to hire him or the final decision. Patterson did hire Shaka.

Bill hired Steve because he thought that building a basketball facility and expanding the South End Zone were the most two important things that the new AD would do over the next 5 - 10 years. He apparently forgot that the AD needs to also be able to raise the money to build those facilities and that a guy from pro sports who was run out of Portland and had only 18 months of college AD experience might not have the perspective or background to do that.

I've been told that the cost to do the various athletics facilities projects has been estimated at a cool $1.2 billion (even though that seems high to me). I think Fenves figured out fairly quickly that with Patterson LOSING donors and revenue, he was going in exactly the wrong direction and wouldn't have a chance of raising those sorts of donations from donors large and small.

Fenves: call DeLoss and Mack and ask who you should hire. Or just call Oliver Luck and see if he's had enough of the NCAA at this point.

I vote for Mack. He understands Texas and this would be a perfect fit for him.

Well, I'm not going to run for the job, but for the good of UT, if nominated, I will serve.

Mack would be a great glad-hander and tremendous fundraiser, no doubt. But there are other aspects to the job too, and Mack is well known for being stubborn to a fault. Would his stubborn streak let him fire coaches he liked when it was time? That's just one question I, personally, would have regarding Mack sitting in the AD's chair. My opinion doesn't count for squat, but I wouldn't view Mack's hiring as an absolute home run.

Whoever the new AD is should make their first order of business replacing those glowing Longhorn decals on the helmets :smile1:

It's a valid concern. That's about his only major fault. Otherwise, I think he'd do a good job. We might see the return of some donors, big ones, that were turned off by SP.

I just don't like that part of his brain that insists on saying things like, "There's a poor tackling epidemic in college football."

I agree. This job needs someone with very strong administrative and negotiation skills. Not to say Mack couldn’t do it, but this needs to be an extremely careful and thorough evaluation. Also, I would wonder about the relationship between Mack and Charlie at this point.
