.you must be a young pup, ii, because if you were a 'Horn fan during Mackovic's time you would not want to wish that time again!! He did recruit likes of James Brown, Major, Ricky, Westbrook, etc. but couldn't do much with that talent--hell we just went through that with Barnes and our basketball program. Anytime you have aggy hanging banners in their stadium asking Texas to retain Mackovic then it is time for him to go

Not nearly as dumb as the ones asking to fire Strong after 16 games.

The reason I started thread is that the "knee jerk fire everyone" lynch mob threads are dumb- really dumb. That's the point.
Oh, and fire Jimbo Fischer too.

Snyder will probably retire for good this time, at the end of the season.

Seen this on KSU boards and some other places. He would be 77 years old by next football season.

Did you see the hit Snyder took on the sidelines?
The man is 76 years old and he got up like nothing happened!

I honestly believe that more than 50% of 76+ year olds would literally die if they received that hit and fall.

Snyder is a boss and a freak of nature.

John Mackovic won 3 Conference titles, was starting to swing the tide against AM and OU.......he had the tide going in the right direction right up until that UCLA game and all hell broke loose......I will also give some credit to John Mackovic for the success of 1998, not only Ricky, Major and the entire Offensive Line but that defensive line as well..........Piss and piddle on John Mackovic but he did pretty well here and had us going in the right direction including the upgrading of the facilities, he told Deloss they needed to be upgraded.

If Mackovic was responsible for starting the facilities updates that is a good thing. However, he played Williams in the wrong position for two years which, in hindsight, was criminal.

Apparently, this thread is meant only for successful AD's. No coach should ever be questioned...Even after multiple blowouts and 59 total yard performances.

I hope Charlie is ultimately successful. The win over OU was a great start. However, OU is suspect and Kansas State is not a good team despite having a terrific coach. I even see that he wrote a letter to fans apologizing for their performance.

I get that it is early and a coach should get a chance with his own recruits. However, there should be at least some progress and equating Florida State's loss or Kansas State's play against Texas is naive at best.

Darrell Royal played Earl in the wrong position ...what do you have to say about that one ? Akers moved him to TB and that won him the Heisman.

There was talk around Austin that Frank Erwin was trying to get DKR fired---remember DKR was also AD.

And I've got a collector's item---a bumper sticker from 1976, signed by Earl, "Unleash Earl".

Even the greats have bosses to answer to.

Earl spent a lot of the 1976 season in various states of injury. Maybe our fans forgot that the same way they forgot Applewhite blew out his knee twice.

I remember Earl's hamstring pull and his carrying more weight than he should have; likely since he was the fullback in the triple-option wishbone that DKR stubbornly stuck to. Defenses had figured it out by 1976 and it no longer had the great advantage it had for UT c. 1969-70. This led to rumblings among fans that the game had passed DKR by and that he was no longer innovating like had done so well earlier in his career.

And DKR's difficulty beating OU, particularly, Switzer's OU teams grated on him. After Texas won those two MNCs in 1969 and 1970 (seasons), DKR lost in 1971 and 1972 to Fairbanks' OU team, then 1973-1975 to Switzer and finally, tied OU in 1976, 6-6. Said another way, after winning back-to-back MNCs, DKR went 0-5-1 against OU. Had to piss him off terribly.

I also remember 1976 being 4-5-1 until that game against Broyles' piggys in Austin, Broyles had already announced it was his last game, rumor around Austin was DKR was stepping down as well, which he did after winning the game, going 5-5-1.

Got the ticket stub in hand -- Sec.102, Row 44, Seat 18.

Well, that kind of worked out for us (and Ricky).

/rant Honestly, I'd take that 4-7 Mackovic year over the table we are setting now. At least that team had a >1500 yard passer and a nearly 2000 yard RB with 25 touchdowns. We also had Major getting ready to go for the following year. That '97 team was competitive in all games save two. The obvious non-competitive came was UCLA and I think the OkState game was ugly, too. I don't recall a shut out that year...in fact, I don't recall a shut out over Macovick's tenure here.

Flash forward to now...We are getting 6-11 first downs IN A GAME at times? Maybe we cross the 50 yard line a couple of times? I was at the Rice game in 94. I was at the UCLA game in 97. To me, today is much uglier. In the UCLA game we had 13 more first downs than we did against Iowa State tonight. We had ~10 minutes more time of possession and quite a bit more passing yards (with a back up QB), too...and that was with a crappy run game that day. That UCLA team was WAY better than advertised and finished 10-2 and 5th in the AP. That game sucked and it hurt, but the body of work from this team from the end of last year to now is much worse.

Iowa State is a good team and we have been shaky all year so it's not that we lost tonight, but the way we lost that is so frustrating. The pedestrian effort we had tonight, against TCU, against ND, against TCU last year, and against Arkie last year makes me wonder about our direction. This team is young, sure, but it's talented, too. That said, this team is rudderless. /rant off

Correct, never happened under Mackovic - we were in like 20+ year scoring streak until the 2004 OU game, although that late FG against UCLA was all that stood in the way of that record.

They are probably the 2nd worst team on our schedule.

I think that's a stretch. Iowa State is better than Rice, so at best they are the 3rd worst team on the schedule. They could beat KSU and WVU (both games are away, though). They are better than us, obviously, and and they scored more points against TCU than we did. I bet they score more against conference opponents than we do and they are already above us in the conference standings.

I'm certainly not saying they are a great team, but they are good and they are playing a lot better than our team in what is a good year in the Big XII. I mean, of the teams they have lost to: two of them are in the top 5, one is in the top 10, one is in the top 25 and ALL of those squads undefeated (save a scrappy Tech team).

They are pretty much middle of the conference in most categories statistically and they lead the conference in time of possession and they are second in rushing offense. That's not shabby considering who they have played. They're good.
