I remember my Dad taking me to my first 'Alamo' movie when I was little. Dueling the film I asked him if we could leave before the end because I didn't want to see Davy get killed. I grew up watching Fess Parker's Davy on Disney so I knew what was coming. Of course he wouldn't leave but now I wonder at my innocence and where it's gone with the youth of today. I suspect what I felt at that age, I'd guess 9-10 is gone by 4-5 today. But maybe that's just me.

John Wayne in the Alamo on "The Republic."
Best job of capturing the idea in film, IMO

Ali publically guaranteed he'd knockout Liston in the 8th round. He surpassed expectations and took him down in the 7th round to shock the world.

The "phantom punch" knockout. Ali did connect, but it's hard to imagine how this punch, which was not much more than a jab, did that much damage to a fighter like Liston.

    Who knows for sure though?

I'll take a stab at an explanation. Watching the slow motion, it didn't really appear to be a jab but more of a right cross where there is a lot more power generated by the shoulder and chest muscles. In addition Liston was moving into the punch, off balance and didn't seem to see it coming. I just watched a video of the full first round in that first round knock out, a minute ago and Ali had hit him with a similar punch earlier in the round. But what do I know about boxing? Nada thing.

I remember at the time Ali claimed it was an "anchor punch" that he had learned from Jack Johnson, presumably by watching film since Johnson died when Ali was 4.

My brother and I were in the NEZ seats, Redding did his flip right in front of us.

That was also the Cole Pittman game where Major took a knee to preserve the 44 point score. I didn't know what he was doing at the time. It was genius, whoever had the idea to do that.
