Rangers do not exercise option on Holland and he is gone for a modest buyout. More money to re-sign Desmond hopefully.

Desmond and one of the top 3 SP's would be a good winter's work. Still need BP help and another bat (surely there is one in the organization).

Looks like both broadcast teams are being overhauled, and those not gone this year will be gone when their contracts are up. Evidently Emily has a choice to make.

Desmond declined the Rangers qualifying offer.

Not surprising that Desmond is testing market, Rangers will still make solid run at him and looks like they have apparently signed Andrew Cashner to one year deal at 10mil so filling that starting pitching need.:texasflag:

FWHORN, that's a start, but I expect to see more activity on signing a starter - perhaps via trade (Sale would be a nice target, but I bet JD already knows that!).

HHD I agree that Sale will be a target this off season, its all about what the White Sox want for him, some combination of Gallo, Profar plus a few more most likely and while I would make that trade I think Daniels is still in love with concept of Gallo and Profar as future cornerstones, something I just dont see happening for either one. Meanwhile, what the hell is going on down in the DR, that is some messed up stuff man.

Cashner is a #4 at best, but that is ok. Sale should be the target. IMHO Gallo and Profar plus a couple of A/AA TBNL for Sale is a no brainer.

    Desmond to Colorado...

I just read on NBCSPORTS.COM that the Rangers are pleading poverty when it comes to Encarnacion...

This was supposed to be the first season without severe budget constraints as the new FSSW contract kicks in. What happened? They had to use the FSSW contract as collateral for the loan they took out to cover their part of the new stadium that they didn't need.

If Yu doesn't agree to an extension by the time the season starts you can kiss him good bye as the Rangers will have low balled him.

I suspect that's just a negotiation posture. IMO, JD will wait a few days longer - it looks like the demand for Encarnacion is drying up and driving the price down; when it gets to the point JD wants, they can pull the trigger. I personally wouldn't have a problem with that signing - the guy can hit and he's acceptable at 1B, and if you can sign him for 2 or 3 years at a reasonable price, you still have some room to sign Yu .

I'm hoping we land him or Trumbo. Encarnacion though is old to enough to believe this could be his last big contract so he might still want the 5-year deal. By signing a 2-3 deal he might believe he will be cutting himself short. I hope either of those players see how well Ian Desmond's gamble worked out.

Reports say that Derek Holland signed a one-year $6M contract with the Chisox. Sorry he couldn't live up to this early potential with the Rangers, but it's best for him and the Rangers to move on. What's JD doing behind the scenes to bring in another good starter?

I am scratching my head on the Holland deal. All I can figure is they feel their park will contain all of his potential gopher balls. I hope they don't think he is a replacement for Sale.

Rangers will look at Josh "soon". Not as crazy as it seems as they want tie-up $22 millionof the Angels money for next season.

Exactly. If Josh can play at all, he costs the Rangers next-to-nothing - so any production at all is a big bonus at the expense of the Angels. And it would be terrific if he could play 1B on a semi-consistent basis - his days in the OF are probably done forever due to his knees.

Well, I blew it on Encarnacion - he signed with Cleveland, apparently for a better deal than JD was willing to offer. That leaves Mike Napoli homeless - and not a hot commodity. Maybe JD can convince Mike to sign for a couple of years at a reasonable rate and end his career as a Ranger. Otherwise it could come down to a platoon or Hamilton (if Josh can play in the field at all). Josh would certainly be budget-friendly, since the Angels will be paying nearly all of his salary.

What to do with Josh? As discussed above keeping him keeps the lid on some of California's money. The report this week that the Rangers would be interested a minor league contract with a ST invite if Hamilton can pass a physical. If they put him on the 40 man roster they can keep him on IR (for all year if necessary) to effect the screws to California. They have traded away a lot of their "major league ready" minor players so a dead spot on the 40 man might be doable.

46 days until Longhorn baseball returns and the final Texas Rangers reporting date for pitchers and catchers in Surprise.

Hamilton signs a minor league contract - will be tried at first base.

I have no illusions about Josh; it all starts with his body. If it doesn't break down then he can be useful on some level. I think the Rangers are really strapped for cash with the Choo and Andrus (I think the extension is kicking in this year) along with the remainder of the Fielder contract (possibly $9 million per year after insurance). Then you have extensions for Yu and Lucroy. If Josh could hit .250 and hit about 20 dingers in a platoon role then maybe that's a pretty good year.

The holy grail would be Joey Gallo figuring things out at the plate.

Good points. If Josh can learn 1B and give the Rangers average defense, the Rangers could play him against RH pitchers and Rua against lefties. If Josh played 80-100 games (a big "if" with the history of his health) and deliver 20-25 homers, that would be outstanding - and the Rangers would be paying him the big league minimum while the Angels are on the hook for his last $26M. And if josh can play, Profar becomes a tradeable commodity - perhaps package him with one of the bullpen guys for a young #4 starter.

As for Gallo, I say start him at AAA with a clear message that he won't go up to the big club until he gets the K rate under control.
